Artist: Johnny Hartman
Album: For Trane
Name: The Nearness Of You
It's not the pale moon that delights me
That thrills and excites me, no no
It's just the nearness of you
It isn't your sweet conversation
That brings this sensation, oh no
It's just the nearness of you
When you're in my arms and I feel you so close to me
All my wildest dreams came true
I need no soft lights to enchant me
If you'll only grant me the right
To hold you ever so tight
And to feel in the night
The nearness of you

My Dad was singing karaoke in FL and the karaoke-jockey (who had heard Dad many times) approached and asked if Dad styled himself after Johnny Hartman. Dad & I looked at each other and then both of us said, "Who?". The KJ was shocked bc, as he then said, Dad sounded so very much like Johnny!!! He said that even Dad's stylistic ways reminded him of Johnny. You can bet that Dad & I youtubed Johnny Hartman after karaoke that evening. I was shocked at the similarities! Dad humbly said, "No, he's way better than me"....but I said, "Dad, it's like I'm listening to YOU!". Dad even sang a lot of the same songs that Johnny had sung. "The Nearness of You" was one of Dad's favorites......and it is one of the songs when he sounded the MOST like Johnny. My Dad passed over 3 & 1/2 yrs. ago....but this remains one of my favorite memories. I just had to share it.

I manged Artists in Los Angeles and they were sensational vocalists but disrespected because they dared to sing standards and Jazz in an era of pop music that has forgotten how to sing, what to sing and how to add their own soul to the recording. Johnny Hartman was a giant and its a blessing that we have his music here and on record to learn from and be inspired by.

How about Al Jarreau?
@robertwendell1556
@robertwendell1556 10 лет назад
I like him, but he's working in a completely different musical genre. Comparing him with Sinatra, Como, Bennet, etc. is comparing apples to oranges. I'm talking jazz singers in the style these singers did. Jarreeau is a much more rock ballad influenced style.
@robertwendell1556
@robertwendell1556 10 лет назад
Yes, I had already answered that same question from from Judith. I agree with you, Walter. I don't think either the man or the genre matches Hartman. Jarreau's stuff is pretty fluffy compared to Hartman and he doesn't have nearly the vocal equipment or musically expressive vocal chops.

Listening to Johnny evokes all the romance any lyric could ever dream of enjoying. I have noted that jazz has become a universal language. As you listen to this track and the marvelous Harmon-muted trumpet stylings, consider this isn't Dizzy Gillespie or Freddy Hubbard, Miles Davis or Fats Navarro and not even Cannonball Adderly's brother Nat. No, this is Terumasa Hino - one of the finest jazz trumpeters in the world and a native of Japan. He now lives in New York City.

AllMusic Review by Scott Yanow This CD combines together parts of two sessions recorded in Tokyo by the warm ballad singer Johnny Hartman. Although titled For Trane, the vocal recital only has three songs associated with John Coltrane ("My Favorite Things," "Violets for Your Furs," and "Nature Boy") and the majority of the selections are actually taken from an unrelated session in which Hartman was matched with trumpeter Terumasa Hino. The music alternates between ballads ("Violets for Your Furs" and "The Nearness of You" are high points) and swingers and, although Hartman does not really improvise, his voice (still in its prime at the time) is appealing. Considering his slim discography, Johnny Hartman's fans will definitely want this one.

I have loved this singer longer than many of his fans have been alive. One thing about the human voice that amazes me....there are millions and billions of people on Earth, yet when you here just a few notes sung by this man you know instantly who it is. And of course this is true for most singers--we can hear their distinctive voices. However, in my youth I spent time in Hong Kong, and one night in the hotel bar, I heard a young Chinese guy singing, and if would close my eyes I would swear he was Frank Sinatra. But I have not heard any Johnny Hartman imitators.
