Man this was when Hoge was the only person who saw Johnny for what he was lol. And he was singing the praises of Khalil Mack, thought Mack should be the #1 overall pick. His opinions aged well
Before the 2006 draft, he said neither Young nor Leinart were worth a first round pick. He did, however, say that jay cutler might be the only qb worth a first rounder. He was spot on 😂
why the thumbs down? this guy was dead on about manziel. skip bayless is the idiot who should get a thumbs down. he thought both manziel and vince young would be the best ever.
Connor McGee If you watch Bayless closely (not sure many do since he's a flaming idiot/troll), he puts wayyy too much stock into college players. He said years ago that RG3 and Vince Young would both be legends basically. Both college football players from Texas. The guy next year will be talking about how so and so from a college in Texas will rule the NFL and it won't happen.
+Connor McGee Bayless isn't an idiot. He knows that Tebow, Young, and Manziel all bring viewers to his show and generate lots of news and controversy. Does he think they're as good as he pretends they are? Probably not. Who else is he going to talk about? Ben Roethlisberger???
TheAed38 He genuinely likes those guys, I'm not even lying. He's not trolling for viewers in the case of Young and Manziel. He has a hard on for Texas college players. He even said RG3 would be better than Andrew Luck. For Tebow, yes he does constantly troll about him. But he has a delusional bias for Texas college players and the Dallas Cowboys.
I will never understand why people make so many excuses for Johnny. People always say that he's just a kid. He's 22 years old. Last time I checked, that makes you an adult. While he is gonna make dumb decisions, his age shouldn't be the go to excuse for why he acts the way he acts. The fact is that Johnny has been enabled his whole life. His father is very wealthy thanks to the oil business and while Johnny was in college, he was buying Johnny floor seats to NBA games and of course letting him party in Vegas on his dime. Now, there's nothing wrong with that but Johnny seems to care more about partying than he does his NFL career. He's the one who said that he wouldn't change for anybody and said that after 7 months in the NFL, he needed to takes things "more serious" than he has been. And then a month or so later, he's in rehab. The guy needs a complete overhaul. His work ethic is pathetic for a guy who is supposed to be a franchise QB. 7 months in and he still had yet to learn the playbook. That's inexcusable. Then he's throwing parties and showing up very late for games. The guy clearly doesn't give a damn about being an NFL player. He's too busy with partying and living the celebrity lifestyle. I doubt he changes even after this rehab stint. He'll keep his nose clean for a few months but I doubt he keeps his act straight for the entire season. He's needs to be humbled. But, that won't happen with the Browns. The owner is a dumbass who cares more about season ticket sales, merch sales, and national media attention than he does about putting a winning football team on the field. Why else would be finance a 100k study on who would be the best QB to take out of Bridgwater and Manziel and decided to against what the 100k study said. And it's not just the owner. The GM isn't much smarter either. Instead of trade Gordon when he had the chance or draft a WR when he knew that dude would be suspended, he did neither and now the guy is suspended again for the entire season. And now the Browns are facing a draft with only 3 wide outs who seem to be good enough to be the number one option. They have another 2 picks in round 1 but it's likely that they blow both of them again. The best thing that could happen to Johnny is him going to a team that isn't QB needy where he can sit on the sidelines and learn. Him being on the Browns with an owner that loves him more for the attention he brings than his ability is just as detrimental to his career as is his own stupidity. Tho, the way I see it, he'll be another Matt Leinart. More concerned with living the college life and will bounce around the league for a few years and be out of football before he's even 30.
in a way, this is also a common sense issue, i.e.: if a person that plays as hard as Johnny in college but parties even harder in college, the common sense is right on point and Hoge was ON POINT
Hoge seemed unlikable back then, but he nailed it on a bunch of these calls......he also said the 2006 draft class sucked for QBs, and only Jay Cutler MIGHT be good enough for the 1st Round. Dead on. Vince Young, bust. Matt Leinart, okay but never panned out. The rest, trash.
+tubenachos she was told by the producers upstairs to tell him to wrap it up. presenters don't say this shit on their own - they have to keep things to a shot clock.
I thought the very same thing about Manziel. I never saw much in Johnny. Never thought he would make it in the NFL. I watched First Take when Merril said this and I was so happy he said it to Skip's face! I am NOT a Skip Bayless fan at ALL. Skip was so high on Tebow and Manziel and now where are they now. I do not watch sports talk shows at all. I really don't like listening to guys who never played at that level making comments about pro athletes. I understand the public may like it because it voices the common man's or women's opinion but I can clearly see and make up own mind on any player in any sport.
Manziel was a classic case of overhype which happens from time to time. Some kid will take Alabama down the wire or Ohio State into OT and sports reporters will think he is the next Tom Brady. Manziel Hackenberg
