Throwing with shoulder pads should be used in all combines and pro days on all quarterbacks who are entering the NFL draft. This will show the true mechanics of ones throwing motion and touch on their passes. A little discomfort is worth it when one is considering you for the highest profile position in sports. Not to mention the millions that will be spent on them. Johnny put on a clinic! Good job young man.
It's really up to the players. The whole point of pro day is for the players to showcase their skills in a comfortable setting. Yeah it would impress if players wore pads, but think about it from a player position. If they had a lot to lose, ie potential 1st round picks, why risk it? Game Tape > Pro day. always. yes it impresses, but you have to weigh the pros and cons. If you do well with pads, maybe you move up a few spots. You do bad like Bridgewater, you get dropped off of a cliff in terms of stock. For 4th rounders and down, wearing pads will help them more than hurt them.
When I originally watched this 4 years ago i thought he had a little zip on the ball...watching it again after watching Darnold and Rosen I'm like what the hell was I thinking every pass seems to wobble.
Johnny had alot of problems in the NFL his arm wasnt the strongest, he wasnt very accurate, how are you throwing ducks at your NFL pro day this tells me alot of his power wasnt coming from his core, he was a running quarterback in college but he only ran about a 4.5 at best which is great if you're quarterback is a dual threat QB not for a running quarterback tho if a quarterback in the NFL was focused on being a wildcat qb ( imo opinion it would never work in the NFL ) he'd have to be at the very least in the 4.4s, alot of his passes in college were completed just because he had an enough time to wait and find an open receiver or because he scrambled and a receiver managed to get open, he's not going to pick apart a defense the way peyton manning Tom Brady or Aaron Rodgers do and he's not fast enough to run all over a defense the way michael vick use to. He was very immature dude is a coke head literally, you can be a certain amout of jackass and be a successful NFL quarterback like Cam Newton, Jameis Winston, Brett Favre. But Johnny was just too much let the fame get to him. And to top it off he was on the Browns which never helps.
russ wilson and cam had 4.5 something 40 times and rg3 was 4.4 something..cant get too much faster than 4.5 if you're a qb besides vick. i think he had all the right skills and arm strength imo. i agree i think being with the browns ruined him. but you should watch grudens qb camp with him a few years ago
Really? You're blaming the Browns? Look at the throws in this video. He's terrible and Merril Hodge was spot on in his evaluation. This kid had no business being drafted in the 1st round and probably shouldn't have been drafted any higher than round 5. He was a great college qb but he did t have the size or skill to play qb in the NFL.
John Haver i spoke briefly about him not being able to pick apart a defense and i spoke about his throws and not generating power from his hips. Its no question he wasnt nfl material but im saying being on the worst team obviously didn't help him, never had talented receivers never had a RB his line could also do some work.
John Haver Russel Wilson didn't have the size either still was a gem he went to a team that was in a bad situation and partied away as well I feel like he could have done alot more
+Metro Boomin "Only" ran a 4.5? A 4.5 is fast as hell for a QB and fast enough for most positions. There's not that many QB's running faster than that. Heck if you run a 4.4 you're just under the peak of acceleration for football which is a 4.3. Off the top of my head RG3, Vick, are the only QB's in the 4.3 range . Newton, Tannehill, Luck, Wilson, Gabbert, Kaepernick are all in the area code of 4.5, 4.6. Of course it means more for some than others. Newton being built like a Edge Rusher, but running a 4.5 is very impressive.
I think he could’ve made it in the nfl if he went to a good organization, the Browns messed him up if he had developmental staff he would be in the nfl
He clearly lacks great arm strength. Those straight drop passes take a bit too long with his slow release and the absence of power. His footwork and speed are quite good. He'll make a good back-up QB and maybe a middling starter down the road. Look at an video of Bradshaw or Namath warming up. They are just standing there, talking to someone, and throwing laser beams. It's the ideal.
Good footwork, and good accuracy. However, he has a weak arm compared to most and a slow release. Hopefully his athleticism makes up for that, but I personally wouldn't use my #1 pick on him.
I'm not counting, you can just eye it. Fast releases would be Peyton, Brees, RGIII, Romo, Rodgers. But if you want a time, Romo has a 0.35 release time and I just clocked Manziel his was 0.75 so twice as long, I consider that slow, but taking nothing away from him, he can improve and rely on his athleticism in his early years.
Funny NFL times from scouts and analysts usually talk about his quick release. Ever watch sports science. Tim Tebow, in college, threw the ball faster than .75 seconds @ about faster .60. I seriously doubt he throws faster than manziel. I doubt you can eye his release time especially with times that low. Especially since the average person reacts at about .2. So your time would be off by a good bit. That .35 you got on Romo I'm sure you've read somewhere and I doubt they eyed that time. If he threw the ball slower than Tebow I'm sure it'd be a glaring weakness talked about on the regular on ESPN.
You people seeing interceptions worry me. There were no interceptions or even a defense on the field. I see Dumb people. Only they don't know they're dumb. Manziel had a pretty good record in college because he knows where to place the ball and he gets rid of it pretty quick. He has great moves and runs away from a lot of DBs with faster 40's. Let's face it. Manziel is white and rich before football and doesn't feed into your gay interracial fantasies.
I know right?? Fuckin Adam wittman acts like richard sherman and earl thomAs are gonna be perfectly defending receivers on every play in manziels career lmao
Throwing a football consistently and accurately starts at your feet. If you have great footwork, which this guy does, you have the potential to be a great thrower. After seeing this I'm on board.
Marc Rover a lot of these passes were ducks which means he wasnt generating power through his hips enough thats why he never had a cannon also he can't read a defense
he rely too much on his arm ti throw the ball. That's why his throws lack alil velocity. He probably can't make a 55 yard throw accurately. In a throw distance competition he would probably throw the ball 57-61 yards. He is very accurate tho and has good footwork. Also has a quick release.
I'll admit I'm torn on his draft position too. I feel he's over hyped and would serve better as a late first rounder. This QB class is one of the weaker in recent years it seems. I wouldn't go with a QB with a high draft pick.
His footwork and his release time are fine, but even I could see problems in his accuracy. Several of his throws to the outside lacked zip or looked like they were thrown too far in front of or behind the receiver, causing the receiver to have to adjust to it instead of catching it in stride, a recipe for pass breakups, tackles before receivers can get yards after the catch or picks. Deep passes hung in the air a bit too. On the only deep throw where he dropped back, I don't think he drove it through enough and he didn't do the greatest job of shifting his weight. The backpedaling on a few of his throws is problematic as well. Pro days are pretty much worthless anyway, QBs can get away with poor placement on throws when there isn't anybody defending and people rarely notice. If he doesn't get a good offensive coordinator to refine his accuracy and his decision making, plus a half-decent o-line, he'll most likely be a bust.
i only counted 3 incompletions: 1 drop, 1 outta reach, and 1 bobbled on the sideline but didnt get feet in. but very impressive proday, hope he has a great career
Tebow also looked great at his Pro Day.. just saying. And I know that Manziel measured in at just under 6 feet tall at the combine, but he honestly looks like he's 5'8. Still think he can be successful, even without the height and big arm, but it's going to be an uphill battle.
U think players doing pro days are there just bcuz that's what the cool kids are doing no it's part of a job interview which is the 32 nfl teams judging the player on every little thing it doesn't matter what you did in college these teams are looking to see if everything from mechanics to arm strength to velocity to agility to knowledge of schemes .... I mean if the nfl went solely on what u did in college I doubt tebow would have been under as much scrutiny ... So yes he is bein judged on throws he's making at a pro day... And like the other guy said most top tier high school QBs could make those barely intermediate throws he's making he has zero velocity on any ball this man will make a 53 man roster but I bet he never starts more than 15 games in his CARRER
I can't believe how many haters Johnny Manziel got on this video. I mean if you would just go to the search bar and type johnny his name is popping up. Endless highlights what other proof does he need because obviously his freshman year Heisman didn't mean anything.
Anybody else notice anything over 20+ yards is 1) rainbowed which would be fine for a 45-55+ yard ball but for 25-30 yards no... n the ball has 3 seconds or more hang time do u know what nfl safeties are going to do to this man
Bust. why do people hella hype this guy up reminds me of ponder mix with romo I rather have teddy pro days don't mean shit Jamarcus had one the best pro day of all time so don't get hyped up over this guy just cuz he can scramble.. Evans made him look pretty good at times tho
Sorry Johnny but today's nfl needs pocket passers tall accurate qbs that will stay in the pocket looking over the head of a 6 ft 3 defender and making throws to recievers that are in stride so the potential of the hit coming is less influential and damaging, a receiver running back to the ball or sideways on a scramble exposes him to being hurt more often
this guy sucks he cant even throw it over the line of scrimmage his little athletic but that's about it. i beat he cant throw over 2000 yards as QB if he plays the full season. he cant read defenses and he lobs the ball in the middle of the field like its a punt common on son lol.
@HoustonTexans Please Take This Man as your 1st round pick. You don't get this kind of opportunity every day, he wants to,stay in Texas unlike Andrew luck Take this guy or we'll regret it.
i'm from london and i can tell this kid has got potential. from videos i've seen his footwork is pretty damn good and he's accurate with his throws. he's arm will get stronger and if he's reading of the play progresses aswel then he's got the making to be a star. reminds me a bit of vick aswel imo but haters gona hate
Great feet. i noticed that for sure. rolling out of the pocket is his thing. Taking things into his own hands outside of a 'busted' play but from the pocket he is a poor thrower. period. He's not a real head strong QB. He's a roll out passer. NFL takes patience and quick thought or your dark toast. 3rd round pick if that. No way would I pick him first! The media will be all over you and the coaching staff til he proves himself to be what he says he is.
I'm not sure what to think about Manziel. I think his pro day was impressive, but his deep balls have some hang to it. But I don't think he lacks arm strength. You can really see him throw some zip most of the time. I also looked at his foot work. It's solid. Not the best, but could be improved. Also, the back pedal throws? Were they scripted? Most of the time those are INT in the NFL. Overall, I am still impress. I have my rankings of who the best will be in this draft. #1 Watkins #2 Robinson #3 Mack #4 Gilbert and #5 might just have to be Manziel.
Well everyone has their own analysis. I think Clowney's motivation issue will come back to haunt him in the end. I was a big Bortles fan, but looking at some stats, he threw a lot of come back routes in college. What I do love though, is that Bortles is willing to stay in the pocket and take the hit while delivering passes. Reminds me a lot of Big Ben. And Bridgewater, I think he's the safest pick of the QB's. His intelligence and hard working alone will assure he's successful in the NFL. But how I just ranked them, is what I predict will be their impact in the NFL. I'd like to hear yours.
@ Michael M if you were picking 8th and desperately needed a Q.B. What else would you say, clearly the Vikings are playing there hand close to the vest, I do not envision Teddy Bridgewater, Bortles or Carr making it to Mn., however they did draft Ponder.
I would pick him in the 2nd round. I think he is a good QB, however there is a lot of talent at WR and DLine coming out of the draft this year. If I was a GM, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to pick the next Bruce Smith, Lawrence Taylor, or Megatron 2.0 in the 1st round.
Steelers, Ravens, and even the Bengals are gonna give Johnny living hell, hes not a pocket QB. Bust! And so much hype. Bridge Water Is way better. Pro days are scripted!
Bridge Water is sooo much better considering it's Bridgewater. Not to mention his pro day was terrible. Not to mention again, the Browns beat the Bengals and could have easily beat the Steelers and Ravens with Weeden passing for 200yds. Solid right? Call him a bust while he busts a nut on your team LOL
Scrambling qbs increase the chances of bad throws and turnovers as we'll as injuries for the entire offensive lineup, defenders love hitting making it easier for them by leaving ur recievers to dry only will hurt ur chances for a healthy team if given the chance of a playoff run against the best of the league, it's entertaining to watch but it gambles everyone involved, a great offense starts from a QB that makes the best chances of success from smart decisions that's involve deception of an overly aggressive defense and can stay in the pocket making throws that will be over defenders heads . Using his rb and tight ends for tough yards and throwing balls away from the pocket instead of scrambling but don't get me wrong it's effective late when that's the only option but Johnny wants to wow every play which will get u in trouble game management is the name of the game!
Hope he goes to either tampa, cleveland or minnesota. Especially minnesota, Ap n johnny pairing up would be like peas n carrots. Perfect or cleveland D is stacke and they got jordan cammeron and josh gordan all they need is another Wr which unbelivebly deep this year n bif on both O n D line
My question is, do they make him use a regulation NFL football on his pro day? I assume they do, but if not that would make a big difference. I cannot wait to see if he can do it in the pros. He is definitely worth the risk for Cleveland. And he would have been for Minnesota. But they're too stupid.
I can't believe ppl think manziel has a weak arm and a slow release?! His arm strength and release time looks pretty good to me. But I'm not a professional scout like everyone commenting on here saying his arm is weak and slow release....LOL
The only knocks i see are all coach-able. Crosses his feet some, tips off the deep ball by holding the ball higher and on deep balls he's finessing it too much trying to put in there perfect instead of driving it and making the WR go get it. He's going to be pretty good, lot of Mark Brunell in him
I don't know how anyone can be impressed with this. He had a couple of good throws but that's it. I agree with other comments about his footwork which is good, but he really, really lacks in the throwing department.
I'm not impressed at all with his arm. Footwork ok. Arm not at all. 40 yard ducks. 15 yard outs were ducks that lacked zip. Those throws over the middle over 12 yards were all interceptions they lacked placement, speed and rhYthm. I see an athlete not a franchise qb. I also see a side show. If im a gm I pass til the third rOund on this guy.
actually i believe he had a decent pro day if you want to see a quarterback with a bad pro day check out zach mettenbergers pro day ducks on most of his passes and didn't put the ball on the money as much as manziel did
Decent and not impressed would lay in the same category. Would you take a qb in the first round as your franchise with a decent pro day that is scripted to accentuate his abilities. This the short throws, the lack of fifteen yard outs, And the lack of the cover two pass, aka the 20-25 yard pass between where cb is behind and safety gets to.
i wouldnt and im not trying to sound like im siding with johnny if i was a gm no way i would draft him with the fact he makes to many throws up for grabs but in my opinion he did have a better pro day than mettenberger
U can't just scramble around all day in the nfl.If Johnny trys to play like he did in college he won't last the season.Even Rg3 didnt last a season doing it an he has sprinters speed.
I am i the only one here who is not hating on Manziel. Personally I like the guy he just hasn't had many opportunity to show what he can do in the pros. Give him his time and stop hating on his unorthodox throw style.
People say his balls are all INT's...have you seen him on game days? Sure its NCAA, but all great athletes can adapt to situations. And I think he can adapt to the NFL.
I'm not a huge fan of some of his antics, but Johnny beasted his pro day. And I hope he's successful in the NFL because his play is pretty entertaining.
