They could not have disrespected him more. They were pop sell outs and Marr never was. Their lack of appreciation is a sign of their shame. I believe he played better as the song went on as he saw his band of music being disrespected by pop sell outs.
@@briansherman823 I don't see lack of appreciation in their demeanor. Musicians are a notoriously tough audience. And this setup is very difficult as well. With them being so close, it might have been weirder if they were facing him. What I could see was them subtly nodding to the music, smiling and then quickly applauding, all pointing to me that they enjoyed the performance. I can't compare what my reaction to this would have been in judgement of them. Of course, we all know that this is one of the most achingly beautiful songs ever written.
@@Rick-zl3zp I agree, people read too much into shit, they were just quietly enjoying it from what I saw , they are hardly going to sit there in awe being in the business that long. They even applauded at the end. Paranoid comment
Johnny is the master, his jangles are sublime and he sings it well, but the song is so missing Morrisey as a pair they are love and devotion Manchester red brick just pure class Those days oh how I miss those days
When I first heard the Smiths original, I thought was a depressing dirge. I now think of it as a tremendous love song" to die by your side, the pleasure, the privilege is mine" You cannot be more committed than that. Also " then a strange fear hit me and I just couldn't ask", how many of us know exactly that feeling.
I remember this. .driving the works van listening to the show with johnny. .rips into this classic .it was fucking magic...!!!...if I was in the studio there I'd be dancing like mozza . .arse in the air
What a treat. The Smiths (and their ilk) were, in a way, a response to the (over)indulgence of bands like Genesis but you rarely get to witness that sort of thing in a plain-as-day sort of way. Watching most of Genesis completely "not get it" was kind of amazing to see. Also, Johnny Marr outros. FFS.
Johnny Marr is great, but leave off Phil Collins. He has had major health issues in recent years to the point that he can barely stand, let alone play the drums. He was definitely appreciating that performance nonetheless.
"Johnny Marr plays 'There Is A Light That Never Goes Out' in front of Genesis & Brian Cox." More like Johnny Marr plays behind Geneis and Brian Cox. I'm being pedantic.
I thought the dude on the keyboard had a Hitler moustache for a second .. then i realised it was just the guitar pick in his mouth. Pretty tidy performance really .. and great to see Prof Cox enjoying it hehe.
Perspective folks: Marr is a guy in his 50's, who dies his hair jet black and wears skin tight jeans. Genesis are roughly 10 years older than him, which is hardly an epic gap.
William H oh for heavens sake of course his hair is dyed. It’s as black as black can be. Not that there’s anything wrong with dying it. But it’s very obvious. There’s aren’t any other fifty year olds on the planet with jet black hair, I doubt Johnny is the first.
I can see Phil not wanting to get into it at first, but once Johnny breaks out those shimmering arpeggios he can't help but bob his old noggin' along. :-)
God, ramshackle setups are difficult, they get you kinda flustered, as evidenced by some really noticeable bum notes. Just reminds me he's actually human to be fair. It must be kinda weird having the drums to the left of you, I've always played with them sat at the back obviously because its your steady base to the song. Very well executed.
Certainly not Brian Cox, Ive had the pleasure to work with him and he certainly isn't boring, I'm on about the three from Genesis who seem to be left cold by this wonderful song.
In front of Phil Collins. I'm in creases. Great song though and your looking at a genius instrumentalist and song writer. I've got an idea, how about Martin Gore of Depeche mode teaming up with Johnny Marr. Imagine the harmonies.
genesis look like 3 old grumpy men.Not an ounce of emotion out of any of them to this masterpiece.though not quite the same wihout morrisey on the vocals.when noel gallagher sings his own songs sound better than liam but cant say same for mr marr.
Sorry I appreciate Morrissey & his version too much & the way it has evolved over the decades live ... But I must admit this is better than festival performances Marr has made of Smith songs, plenty of engineering I suppose ?😃
+John Trollston His current band play his full catalogue with wonderful flair astonishing & a couple of The Smiths songs refreshingly Well played....All astonishing especially His best lead guitarist Jesse Tobias 😃
Listen to his solo album's in great detail for a few month's & feel every emotion in every story & grab a live show. Also his voice has improved over the years& his current band are the best group of musician's he has worked with....Boz Boorer& Jesse Tobias are the best guitarist's he has worked with 😃
What an awkward set-up that looks! Cramped & squeezed tightly in to a room looking at the backs of the heads of 3 old men & an ex-member of D-ream! You couldn't write it. :)
Brian's love in it. Phil ends up lovin it. The other two grim fuckers especially that Tony Banks arrogant wanker ( I saw the doc ) what a plonker. Johnny showed them twats except Phil and Brian etc.
I was glad to see Phil getting into the song halfway through, Brian's already got the brain to enjoy the song instantly. As for the rest of Genesis, they were publicly humiliated by Johnny's performance, even if it took a bit of time for him to get his voice right.
Such a wierd set up..I don't get this..it's like taking beloved classics and reducing it to the level of playing it in front of your nan when she's got her friends from the bowling..round..there is also an air of impress me ..as if he's doing an audition..it's so bizarre..I would just refuse to do it
