From reading a lot of comments in the past, Johnny always got the bad image for being a tyrant, and even some of the guys in the Ramones said this. But Johnny kept the band rolling. His approach was that this was a job. Someone had to take charge and he did a great job, without question, as the band kept playing for over 20 years. He handled the band like a business and if/when the other guys got hopped up or wanted to get loaded before shows, he acted accordingly. I believe Johnny when he said he cared. Because as he said in this clip, they were all in this together.
Spot on. Since the death of Johnny, it's been really easy to spot the Johnny-come-latelys (no pun intended) when it comes to the Ramones; they claim to love the band, yet INSIST on pointing out (every time) how much they dislike Johnny for "stealing Joey's girl" and "being conservative". What made the Ramones special was the combination of different personalities; they all played their own important role in the band. Obviously Dee Dee and Joey churned out most of the songs, but the SOUND of the Ramones, and concept of the Ramones, began with Tommy and Johnny, and lasted as long as it did because of Johnny's work ethic.
You know, its always the singer that is viewed as the frontman but sometimes its one or more of the other memeber that are the glue of a band. I feel like Johnny's years of his own substance abuse hindered him from speaking more on this subject, but it's not an easy one at that. Proud to own my Ramones shirt despite being 2yrs old after their split. Their music will forever live on ♥️
He cannot express that he cared for Joey and was saddened by his death. He was very stubborn by nature and I hope he could’ve seen past all of that before he left us. Goes to show that grudges aren’t worth it. There is no discrediting going on he was a huge part of the band. RIP Ramones forever
Part of why Johnny was stubborn that way was because of how he was raised, his father was just like the way he is here, stubborn and doesn’t express emotions
"Hes a member of the Ramones. I love the Ramones" thats basically Johnny saying he loved Joey, despite all their differences and everything they went through. I think it's pretty obvious to see in this video Johnny truely cared about Joey. Its sad they never did or could work things out, but that's just the way things go. Despite all their personal issues they had, they'll always be one of the best bands of all time. Ill even say, THE best band of all time, i dont care what anyone says or thinks. I appreciate Johnny and Joey for all they've done together
You know what i feel Joey and Johnny truly where brothers. The may have hated each other and did not get along but they where able create kickass music together and where the only two members that stayed in the band during the constant line up changes. Johnny was never able to fully admit it but he loved joey and he took that to his grave. Tommy Ramone said it best at the RRHOF They truly loved each other even wen they where not being civil with each other. And Johnny wrote in his book that he nd Joey had a unspoken agreement that they do get along on some level. And he told Howard Stern that thay have been friends at times
They were friends until Johnny and Linda got together, You can't blame Joey for being upset about it, It wasn't like Linda was a groupie, her and Joey were together for 4 YEARS! She said in an interview along time ago that her and Joey were each others FIRST IN EVERYTHING, 1st kiss, 1st love, 1st sex etc etc. If not for Johnny, Joey would've married Linda and had children.......... So sad, not 1 of the original 4 members had children.
@@monicajean37 they were never friends.. John picked on Joey from day 1 .. they were different.. too different.. John grew up tough . Joey was a nice shy kid ... That alone made John hate Joey .... Joey was a Jew and John was a racist ... John bullied Joey .. the last straw was Joey losing his bitch to John .. that's it ..
Reading Johnny's autobiography "Commando" was eye opening. For all Johnny's flag-waving uber-patriotism, he was surprisingly open about his contempt for the civic obligations most Americans understand is part and parcel of being an engaged citizen - particularly with respect to jury duty, voting, civil/military service and paying taxes. He made some great music and I'll never stop loving the Ramones ... but Johnny seemed incapable of understanding the internal contradictions within his own philosophy.
In a weird way its both funny and tragic at the same time. Johnny never actually wanted joey to be in the band in the beginning. He wanted to play with dee dee, tommy and his other friend, but not with joey. It was only because dee dee and Tommy out voted him that joey was able to get in. Then 20 years later, John secretly admits to the managers that he and jo were business partners, and that joey was the one person he never wanted to replace. How times can fool you.
Yeah but you gotta know at first Joey was supposed to be the drummer not the singer. Once Joey became the singer, Johnny himself always admited he was irreplaceable. In his autobiography he mentioned he always kept a guitar with him but once Joey passed away he knew Ramones was over.
I think one of the reasons why he kept distances because he was ashamed. He didn't know how to resolve issues because he'd have to admit being wrong. Joey was a brother to him they were all Brothers to each other and love to each other for what they had made together. It's upsetting watching this. Can you even imagine what it must be like to be Marky Ramone to look back on this? How painful it must be.
The mental gymnastics Johnny's showing here to say he loved Joey without saying he loved Joey! Classic Johnny! He was always a SOB, might even say an A hole, but he was himself through and through and didn't GAF what anyone thought. And that nature was part of why his guitar was so legendary! And the yin yang of Johnny's hard as nails nature with Joey's soft heart and sentimentality was perhaps the heart and soul of the Ramones??!! Not that the other classic members weren't essential to the band being what it was, definitely one of those wholes being greater than the sum of the parts! But those two will always be one of Rock and Rolls great misfit "brothers", and there's always some love and some conflict in those infamous duos! But that tension leads to some of the greatest musical art of all time! Lennon and McCartney, Dave and Ray Davies, David Gilmour and Roger Waters come to mind! Though perhaps the first two examples have plenty of love along with their conflict, not so sure there was ever a lot of love between Gilmour and Waters! But when they cooperated the most, we may have gotten some of the best Pink Floyd! Anyways, I digress! RIP Johnny! RIP Joey!
In my opinion, I think Johnny's military upbringing didn't allow him to show emotion. To me, when he says he's showing weakness, it's like " No Johnny, it shows you're human." R.I.P. Joey, Johnny, Dee Dee, and Tommy😞
Reality was the Ramones should have stopped in the ‘80s and just done the occasional tour for the cash if their post-Ramones stuff hadn’t taken off. They’d have still been revered. To be in a band with these complexities is just really draining and I say this as someone who fell in love with The Ramones at 14.
It seems he cared about Joey in as much as he was part of the 'brand' Ramones. Part of the institution that must be defended. Do you see what I mean? Did he care for him as a human being? Probably not.
It’s ok to be sad for a moment, then you move forward. Inslee spread propaganda via guise of “in it together.” As a matter of fact so did Hillary Clinton.
He didnt like him at all, Joey was conservative and Joey was an artsy Liberal. Johnny was a military kid while Joey was, Joey. Johnny stole Joey's girl in '77 after Rock n' Roll Highschool and it was beyond repair. Years later Tommy said he should talk to Joey and reconcile, Johnny just said he didn't like him, that he's not his friend. For years they never talked, recording separately which definitely had an impact on the quality of songs they were putting out through the 80's. Instead of hit after hit on albums it would be more hit, hit, miss if you go back and listen to those 80's albums all the way through
I think you mean that Johnny was a conservative... And yes he was. What do you think you'll get from someone who thanked George Bush at the Rock n Roll hall of fame. Like... What did George Bush ever do for him or the Ramones or music. Awkward.
Everyone calls Johnny a complete asshole and all that, but you have to give the guy a break. Yeah he was pretty stoic and set in his ways, but clearly you can see he had a heart and soft spot for Joey despite their differences, as he doesn't want to fully admit it, but you can see it. These guys couldn't stand eachother but they stuck it out in the band anyway for us fans, and I have the utmost respect for all of them for that.
He WAS a complete asshole. Even he says he doesn't know why he felt sad when Joey died. That's something a sociopath would say. The only reason he felt sad was because of what Joey meant in the context of the Ramones. He didn't give a fuck about Joey the human being. When Marky told Johnny that Joey was near death and that he should go see him and bury the hatchet, Johnny refused. Marky said that "the window is closing" to which Johnny responded "Let it close then. He is not my friend." Johnny's brain wasn't wired like a normal human, but that doesn't excuse him from being a complete fucking asshole. Neither does his death.
It's important to note, that while Johnny and Joey's political views differered greatly, a source of constant friction, Johnny always went to bat for Joey, even from the jump. Joey was viewed as a circus freak weirdo by his high school peers, shy and awkward, yet this is who Johnny wanted to front the band and never waivered. Joey needed Johnny just as much as Johnny needed Joey. I always believed that Johnny's formative years were the reason for this outlook. They essentially were integral in giving each other new lives when they both desperately needed one, Johnny never lost sight of that, and deep down, Joey didn't either. It's a bit of a miracle it held together for 22 years, considering the bands that fell apart over much lesser circumstances.
@@edsaid4048 They got along with the Ramones. That was it. You have to understand as well that their life in terms of becoming adults, where in the Ramones, year in and year out since they were young. People grow and mature and, the one you were at 18 - 19 years old is not the same as when you are 50. I am 53, and i cant see myself "hanging out" or socializing with ppl i knew in my young adulthood. Either we had a business or not for many years. It would be strictly professional at that. 20+ years in a punk band and touring nonstop all over the world when most punk-rock bands broke up after 2 to 3 records is quite a feat. And the Ramones kept it together for 20+ years... The legacy will live on.
@smkxodnwbwkdns8369 way to show a tremendous lack of understanding of their dynamic. I'm defending most coworkers I've had in those situations. "We were in it together."
“We were in it together” The band was a unit, a team, even a family. People and families don’t always get along, but they close ranks to defend the family. What the band did was bigger than any personality conflict between any of its members, and Johnny and Joey both kept the band going. Unlimited love for the Ramones, bought my first Ramones album in 1979, saw them five times.
It’s so sad that they never made up before they died. Johnny didn’t visit Joey In hospital but I could always see both sides of the story. I’m sure they made up in heaven anyway
Ngl this is probably one of the saddest things I’ve ever seen. Even though I think Johnny could be a total prick at times this is definitely proof that he had heart and deep down he cared but unfortunately he was emotionally handicapped by something, whether that be his upbringing, his stage persona, or something else entirely.
Johnny is my favorite Ramones, easily. He was a genuine, frank and honest man. We see him here a little emotional, you can feel it. He won't say anything bad about Joey. The bad guy in the Ramones is Marky who keeps talking bad about Johnny in his mediocre biography. Marky even insults Joey by repeatedly reminding us that Joey was stinky. Marky is a loudmouth who has no respect for those who gave him a career...Johnny and Joey.
Johnny never went to see Joey when he knew he was dying. Didn't attend his funeral, and never even mentioned his name at the rock and roll hall of fame induction.
Johnny was a military type guy he grew up that way of course he didnt show much emotion as much it was drilled into him. Johnny was not a bad person or the pos he was made out to be. I love Johnny (although I love Joey with my whole heart) he wasnt a bad person. Yes he did stupid and hurtful ass things and could be an ass but he was a good person in general of course. Ill never look down on Johnny
@@JCStorm76 Medical conditions deserve blame? Okay... Joey is much more of a tragic figure is all I'm really saying. But It's both their faults that they made such great music.
My humble opinion, but the ramones are americas' greatest rock n roll band. And, this clip doesn't change my position but solidifies it, because beyond all the obvious turmoil, they stood as a band together and made something unique and arguably beautiful. Which, is what I think the usa is as well. Flawed, angry and disagreeable, but at its heart a defiant and proud group of pinheads. The ramones are eternal
