I met Johnny about 6 years ago. He was coming out of the Padre Hotel in Bakersfield, CA. I was coming out of a coffee shop next door. I recognized him and told him I was a fan. He embraced me. He is an underrated country legend.
Johnny Rodriguez and Gene Watson should be in the Hall Of Fame. There music is what country music is about. They are Icons in country music. What a shame.
They are both incredible and I’ve only heard their music for a couple of years, as I never followed country , but now I hear them on Willy’s Roadhouse on Sirius radio.
Yes, he has so much soul in his singing. He FEELS it, he instinctively knows what the song is about and gives it his all. He is special.@@johnjohnson2855

This song came out around 1974 or 1975, and I remember it so well. I had just been given my Dear John letter and verbal "hit the road" news from the only girl in my entire life who I loved with the deepest and greatest degree of passion and who I wanted more than anything to spend the rest of my life with. The words in this song hit such a true note with my memories of that relationship, even though that was now 48 years ago. Johnny Rodriguez had a string of really fantastic, great old-style C&W music hits during those years and I own nearly all of the LPs he put out during those early years of his career.
Every song that J R sings is gold to my ears By far a great country singer One of Country music's most underrated singers This is not only my favorite song but my favorite performance! This masterpiece with such ease I was transferred beautiful song lovely song love it great song I love that song so much I love Johnny Rodriguez so much he has a beautiful and lovely voice 🎤🎤🎸💯💯💯💯💯💯😻😻😻😻😻😻🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩😍😍😍😍😍😍🎵🎶🎼🔥🦊😘😘😘😘😘😘🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰💘💘💘💘💘💘❣️💛💓💗♥️💞💕❤️🧡💜💚💙💖
I lost my soulmate in 2008 and every day I love Johnny and this song so much I listen over and over cause I could not say goodbye to him. Thank you with all my heart for this song ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
My brother-in-law and Johnny are very close friends, they met years ago at Garner state park and they still return there for a old times sake. He is one of the best country singers of all time.
This is not only my favorite song but my favorite performance! He sat there, played that guitar, and sung this masterpiece with such ease, I was transfixed. Done before the days of auto-tune, and performed before a live audience, he gave an absolutely flawless performance. His voice was smoother than silk; the tone, the timing, the feeling, the soul touching ability he possessed leaves me in awe. His voice is truly a beautifull God given instrument. I can't tell you how many times I have watched this and savored every perfect note. I even copied it to disc instead of the one he released. Not that that one isn't good, but there's something special about this one. Thank you so much for sharing this!
+CrazyGracie07 ---You said everything about this performance of JohnnyR! That voice just melts me! That song will rip your heart out! Could you send me this video so I could save it and watch it anytime I want?
No autotune, no fireworks, no cliché references to pickups, riverbanks and mud, the brand of liquor or beer he's drinking, the moonlight, or the girl by his side... Just a heartfelt ballad of a man missing the love of his life who's moved on while he still struggles... CLASSIC!!!
@@helenlewis3708 No the great Mickey Newbury wrote it and most of the songs he wrote you could make a film about them. Check out San Francisco Mabel Joy. Pure Newbury.
Yes, he sings with tremendous feelings. Better than most. And yes, it does tear your heart out and the tears start for me. He must be an incredibly sensitive man, otherwise, he couldn't execute the song the way he does. Love it.
I’ve been a country music fan most of my life. Growing up, I remember hearing all the “regulars” but never heard Johnny Rodriguez!! Now, I’ve played his songs over and over and over! To me, he’s the epitome of country music singers...the whole package. THE BEST!! Thank you, Jesus, for blessing me with this gift. Thank you, Johnny, for sharing your gift with the world.
Same here. In the 70s, my local country radio station played a lot of Willie, Waylon, Glen, Loretta, Dolly, Merle, Tammy, Ronnie, and Charley. I just don’t recall hearing anything from JR until recently. But now that I’ve heard him, I can see I was missing out on some fine singing.
He IS simply the best. I don't know how I missed him all these years, until about 2 months ago. Then again, I am almost tormented by his singing, it's that good. He's grabbed me by my heart strings, for sure.
I loved this song the first time I heard it on the radio 40 years ago. Incredible song from the great song writer Mickey Newbury tried by a few but never found it's feet until Johnny Rodriguez got a hold of it and made it his own and ran it all the way to #2 in 1976. Johnny R. is one of the great song stylists of all time! This is a classic performance, a treat to watch and to listen to.
Agree, I can listen to it non-stop. What a masterful singer, a soul singer. And the material was meant to be sung the way Johnny delivers it. And his rendition of I May Fall Again is incredibly beautiful. And I love the addition of Spanish. Someone said he is so sexy - you got that right. And in his 70's now, he is gorgeous, at least till a few years ago. A treasure.@@cheryllebleu674
I just saw Johnny about 3 weeks ago in Cameron, Texas. He was so good. His live performances are extraordinary. He sounds like he does on the records. If you ever have a chance to see him? Go!!!!!
I had the pleasure of seeing Johnny live in 76, at a free out door concert in Denver Colorado,he was hours late as the tour bus had broken down I was 14 Years old.he kissed my older sisters hand and she fainted didn't wash her hand for a week lol....
I remember my older sister took me to a small place in Denver to see him, I think I was maybe 17 years old but i remember looking up at him on the stage and I was like two feet away and thinking wow he’s so handsome. Still love his music. Incredibly talented man. Doesn’t get the credit he deserves. Beautiful voice. Still listen Johnny R!!
This is one of my favorite country songs. I think it rivals "he stopped loving her today" Newburys writing is superb and Johnnys performance is unmatched. I particularly love this version.
That was one of the best live performances i have ever heard. " We believe in happy endings " is equally good. Johnny always has the look of boyish innocence about him.
Many people have commented that for some reason, they didn't know about Johnny R. till recently. I am one of them. He is sensational, simply the best. In my books, it's Johnny R., Marty Robbins and Merle Haggard, the tops. But, if I HAD to pick, it would be JR and MR, as much as I love Merle Haggard, Johnny's feelings in these songs is the same as Marty Robbins. Both can make you cry and both did. I cannot get enough of this man, every day I play him over and over and yes, I do have a life. I'm a writer myself, of music and a musical comedy and a dramatic play but I must have my fix of JR every morning. All that said, I am heartbroken at where he is now. Yes, I've shed many tears over it. Last night I saw a recent video of him at some event. I wanted to hold him, say, what happened? A person has to be in emotional pain to drink and drug like this. I see a wedding band on him. Good. Someone is taking care of him, thank God. And Johnny, you have a fan like no other in me. I've listened to country all my life. You are sensational. Thank you for the pleasure you have given me. I know your millions of fans have the same sentiments.
I have listened to many covers of this song, even the song writer's cut, Johnny's version does the most justice to this amazing song!!! Many thanks to this posting!!!
Such a great job Johnny. I wish I could have been lucky enough to have shook your hand when you were in Concert at The Ranch in Midland Texas. You are my favorite.❤❤❤
This is country music at its best.I heard Johnny sing back in 1973, song, Pass Me By Of You're Only Passing Through would be a great song for him. His voice rivals Kim Reeves. Thanks for making this music available so everyone can listen to it.
