Bayonetta is back with a new haircut and new toys, but is the new adventure worthy of it's predecessor? Let's hit the Climax with Bayonetta 2 for the Nintendo Wii U!
One minor thing I've noticed that I really like about Johnny is that unlike 99.9% of all RU-vid Channels nowadays, he doesn't demand subscribers at the end of every video. He simply always finished with: "Thank you for watching, have a great night, and take care." It's so much more natural and the lack of desperation made me want to subscribe to him anyway. I really appreciate that.
I didn't expect this to happen. Thank you Johnny. You sir rock. Bayonetta 1 despite being well received did not sell well. In turn when they had planned a sequel, no company wanted to help publish it. That's the reason why Nintendo came in and made it a Wii U exclusive.
Some call me johnny Z. After 5 years of peace a man claiming to be his brother takes his games and Johnny has no choice but to team but with his worst enemy. Will they get the games back ? Find out next on some call me johnny Z'
eduardo coello Nah the 3ds version is great from what i played from the demo, the wii u version however... Let's just hope it isnt a generic 3-D Beat-em-Up with Sonic Characters...
You mean for taking points away from having a lackluster story in a genre where having a quality story is often overlooked, let alone difficult to expect? Personally, I find some people are trying too hard to find what is wrong with this game to help justify why it doesn't deserve a perfect score. A perfect score is not a perfect opinion. In the end, everyone's going to feel different about it. Regardless of it's score, it doesn't mean that everyone's (who's played it hopefully) going to like it. If you name any game you feel is worthy of a perfect score, there's going to be someone out there who disagrees with you. And for anyone screaming "paid review," Nintendo would be perfectly fine financially if they never even took in Bayonetta 2.
Uhhhhhh no… I was talking about the way he does his reviews, his style. Not the actual rating of this game. I really enjoy how in-depth he goes into the games. I feel like I experienced the game but still want to play more.
Samuel Evans I see. Most people are whining about the score, but yeah. I enjoy Johnny's reviews. He misses some details sometimes but I dont fault him for it.
LostChildOfTime What's sad is hardly anybody cried "Paid Review" when the Sony was bragging about the "Perfect Scores" The Last of Us got. And THAT game WAS trash from a design standpoint, yet clowns like Ryan went as far as to call it his Game of the Year...
Advertising, or I should say the lack of it. You can make the greatest game known to man, but if not many know about it then it isn't going to sell. Bayonetta 1, despite being widely acclaimed, still only sold 2 million when it was multiplatform late in the lifespans of both the 360 and PS3. In the case of the Wii U, it's sold considerably less than how many systems were out when the first Bayonetta launched, and Nintendo really hasn't done much if any advertising for the game. I preordered the game and got it launch day, but that's because I knew about it. When I went to the store to pick it up I asked the store clerk how many people had picked it up. He said I was the 3rd person to get it the game, and I got it at 5 pm launch day. I looked around and didn't really see any advertising for the game at all in the store, and I remember not seeing anything on TV. I'd seen some ads online, but that was honestly all. I had hoped Nintendo had learned to advertise the products such as this to the point of annoyance, especially after Wonderful 101 bombed to the extremely when it came to sales. Sadly it seems that they still didn't do that, but at least the sales for the game are better in NTSC and PAL regions than Japan.
It's FW sales in the west are bigger than they were on PS3 and 360. There's been TV ads and Playboy ads so they at least made the effort. I'm curious how inFamous isn't a big seller along with Metroid but they continue to make sequels for them. It must be that first party publishers treat their modest selling franchises better than third party ones do
Sjono It's more that a lot of Publishers usually have blockbusters to cover losses, like EA with Madden of Nintendo with Mario. 3rd Parties, on the other hand, can't always quite depend on that, hence why they usually stick to what sells, like Sega does with Sonic.
Sjono Well if there have been TV ads, then I've not seen them, and I look for ads for Nintendo games considering how terrible they've been with the marketing. I did know about the Playboy thing already, but I don't know how successful that was. They made more of a try with Bayonetta 2, which was good. But with what happened with Wonderful 101 I felt they still should have done more. As for the reasons, it's like what papershadow69 said, they have more to lean on. Nintendo can make a Mario game and know that it will sell at least 1 million copies no problem. In Sony's case they have lots of 1st party titles that will pretty much sell as well. To take your inFamous suggestion, even though Second Son is considered by many to be the weakest in the series, it still managed to sell 1 million copies in about 9 days. Metroid is also on that scale, as generally Metroid games tend to sell well in the west more than in Japan. The other thing is that the studios that make those games generally don't do yearly releases, well except for Mario and Sonic that is. Metroid games are spaced out over time, as are the Infamous games because they are developed by one studio whose job is to develop those games specifically.
People constantly undermine Bayonetta's story elements and plot, even when they praise other aspects of it, which is a shame. There is a decent amount of lore and world building elements that actually makes the game make sense. I just wish it was more appreciated, sort of in the same way I wish Bayonetta as a character was more appreciated for her subtle but pretty developed personality, instead of as just a bad as whose clothes are made of her hair meaning she can be naked.
I like that there was a lot of mystery in the beginning and as it went on you kept getting those "ooooohhh" kind of moments and makes me feel like I'm more invested and a part of the story
blu pyro I'd honestly cross off the New Mario/Luigi Bros and replace it with, say, ZombiU (but only if you enjoy roguelike survival-horror), but those others I can extensively agree on.
Guys, guys. I'm gonna get all those games. Some before others though. And I don't think I'll be getting ZombiU. And Shovel Knight and Wonderful 101 have a fairly low chance of me buying them. They don't look all that interesting to me...
Feigndall What about Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, Hyrule Warriors, Super mario 3d world, Wind Waker HD, Mario Kart 8, Smash bros, DKC Tropical Freeze. They are all good games, people dont want to buy a Wii U because they dont want to, the reason is not about games anymore.
SMegasM Some people just don't see interest in those games. I only own two of the games you mentioned because the others simply don't interest me enough to justify their prices, and the ones that do I can get cheaper versions on the 3DS, case in point being Mario Kart and Smash Bros. Sure I might buy Smash Bros for the Wii U, but it will likely be after a price drop, and considering how Nintendo games retain their price for a long damn time I might be waiting a while.
People saw the Wii U get a very slow start and were apprehensive but flocked to the PS4 and Xbox One in hopes that those were going to be the safe bets for the next generation. Then hype started to pile up and people were buying new consoles just because they wanted an excuse to have a shiny next generation console, regardless of there being any decent games at the time or on the horizon (not being a jerk, just saying what people wanted, but didn't got out of next gen). Titanfall, Destiny, Sunset Overdrive, Driveclub, all of these games were either disappointments or people stopped caring about them at release/a month after release. I can't even say they were anticipated because they were groundbreaking or somethin. Some of them even were available on previous consoles. It also didn't help at all that publishers were unsure of the shift to a new generation and half-assed some mediocre, probably lower budgeted "triple AAA" games for this year, causing this lukewarm reception. It's a combination of factors but between the Nintendo exclusives, this one and a few other games, plus backwards compatibility with GC and Wii, yeah, I'd say it's now every bit as worth it as the other consoles. The funny thing is that the first person mode in GTA V next gen excites me more than all of those PS4/X1 games.
keeperxiii I not much of a fan of these shiny PS4's and X1 for one reason they lack Japanese games I'm a huge sucker for video games with anime cover art's.I will say though out of gen 8 the Wii U is the best console awesome exclusives, free online, backwards compatibility, and it's cheaper why do people hate this thing again?I pretty much agree with what you said though.
Dammit, Johnny! You got me into Castlevania, and now you're doing the exact same thing to me again, this time with Bayonetta! Well, time for me to do some shopping!
YES!!! THANK YOU JOHNNY! I just came back from work while working while im sick (im sure u understand how bullshit that is) and I come home to see u uploaded a new review! Sweet made my night and now I can relax. Keep up the amazing work bro.
Excellent review. I'm playing both back to back and I'm having a blast. The soundtrack is so good especially the Moon River remix near the beginning. Also, did anyone else get an ad around the 9 minute mark? scared the hell out of me! RU-vid, you scary.
Bayonetta 2 was definitely the best game I played that came out this year! Well worth the day one purchase, and having Bayonetta 1 come along with too also greatly helped! Hopefully a lot of other people get a look at this game and give it a shot, Platinum oughta be rewarded for their efforts!
If you want to get it over with, here's a LP by some guys who found the game early. Just keep in mind that the FPS is bad because they're playing Co-op, so it won't be that bad when playing Solo. I'm personally looking forward to the game.
Fredrick Lucero That is true, and I wouldn't call the game well polished. I'm just saying that the singleplayer won't be as bad as what we saw in that video. Besides, many games have reduced framerate in co-op/local multiplayer.
I was reading an interview with one of the guys behind Parappa the Rapper, and one thing stuck out in mind that this game may relate to - We could easily have more great-quality games like this, if people bothered buying them. Since everybody's sucking their wallets dry for crap like Call of Duty, we'll have more of that crap instead. It's not the game creators that are hampering down the better of the industry (though they obviously play a part in doing so); it's the game buyers that don't bother supporting the better games. Case in point - Everyone that is missing out on Bayonetta 2. Do yourselves a favor and buy the console (unless you already have it!) and this game! There's plenty to enjoy here :D
I'm surprised CoD is still selling, you'd think the dumb asses that play the games would finally say: "Wait a minute, this is a bit too similar to the last 6 games" When it comes to CoD, there are differences, just not visible differences.
***** "Too different"? So, creating things that actually make significant changes in the game is bad? Like, new fun creative ways to make a game fun or fresh? "That'd fuck everything up" Tell every Nintendo franchise ever that.
I'm agreeing with Ryan here. Only the difference is is that most of the time, the people who buy it are 5-9 year olds who think that if they have a game like call of duty they are the coolest people ever. If parents stopped falling into the traps of crying and throwing fits that children exploit, we would have more good games. Sadly, it seems we won't get that soon.
I'm not digging the Nintendo costumes. They feel like... "Oh it's on Nintendo??? We HAVE TO PUT SOMETHING MARIO/ZELDA/METROID IN THERE CAUSE FANS OR SOMETHING" No, I don't care for the costumes. Instead, why not put her in Smash Bros??? That would have been awesome :T
Silentstorm2860 sakurai wants the new smash to be e 10 and up so more kids can play it. It is proved this is true cause he removed several trophies because they revealed to much skin. He wants this game to sell well
you should also consider getting xenoblade chronicles x - splatoon- zelda u-devil's third-starfox u and i assume metroid will come too. oh and another big mario title! and with the other guys mentioning super mario 3d world - mario kart 8- pikmin 3 (tried the demo and loved it... getting it asap) -w101-donkey kong tropical freeze. or you could get the last ever somewhat decent ubisoft game ever called zombiU. the list goes on but you get the point!
Deus EX HRDC, ZombiU, Splinter Cell Blacklist, Rayman Legends, Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed. These are also good choices. Especially ZombiU and Deus Ex (the gamepad alone makes it feel likea whole different game than the other versions) and Rayman Legends.
4:28 Kite? I always saw it as a poncho, lol... Regardless, nice review Johnny! It's nice to hear positive reception for this game, considering that there could be a sequel in the future!
To the people complaining about Sonic Boom you are comparing it too much to the main Sonic games. Its best to approach it as a separate title since it is a spin off as part of a separate universe so of course it would be different who knows it may turn out decent
I actually bought this game over the weekend without playing Bayonetta 1, and I have to say I LOVE the game. It's probably my favorite game on the Wii U. While the story itself is as non-sensical, I think the characters more than make up for it. Bayonetta herself is frikkin great to listen to. The game itself is just so much fun, I love being able to bring that combo up repeatedly.
Based on the demo, Shattered Crystal seems very nice. Also, Johnny, you are starting to be one of the only reviewers left whom I can watch. Even with games you enjoy or games that are from a series you enjoy, you still give it a fair analysis when it comes to the good and the bad the game. I can respect that.
Now the question is, how long will we have to wait to get this on PC because I’m not picking up a WiiU just for this (as much as I love Bayonetta) and Bayonetta already got released on PC so come on, Nintendo. You can’t keep denying the existence of PC gaming.
It's really sad when such a fucktastic game probably won't sell well( since the first game was on the PS3/360 and didn't sell well at all) especially with the relatively poor sells and undeserved hate for the WIIU( Which I'm getting for Christmas because it looks better than both a PS4 and Xbox 1 to me. THAT'S RIGHT I SAID IT, now bring on the PS4 and Xbox one fanboy hate!
***** Good to know because like I said I just got it yesterday and love it and I took down my ps3 to make room for it.Good time to do that too with all that shit that went down because of the ''Interview,'' movie; the Wii U would be a nice replacement until things clear up. No offense to anyone who did get affected by this. If this comment in anyway bothered you, I send my deepest apologies in advance.
***** I really thought the Wii U got too much hate and I love seeing how it's doing better. Looking forward to the next possible console like maybe the Wii UX.
One of the best games on the system. One of the best value propositions as well. I never played the original on PS3. Though perhaps that is a good thing as I heard the PS3 version had framerate issues. Enjoyed playing Bayonetta and Bayonetta 2 back to back :).
Why would the Wii U version of Bayonnetta be a watered down version of the PS3 version? The Wii U is more powerful -_- Even devs say the Wii U is kind of an in-between the PS3 and 4
The PS3 version of Bayonetta is garbage in comparison to both the Wii U and 360 versions. Frame rate drops, screen tearing, and slowdown ahoy. I'm curious as to why anyone would think the Wii U version could be watered down by any means.
It's more that despite being more powerful hardware, a lot of ports didn't really bother to try when releasing on the Wii U. Even if the hardware's better, it means little if the developer doesn't give a shit. Thankfully, Platinum games does care.
The Wii-U version of Bayo1 at times out performs the 360 version and at times it doesn't, but these are very small moments that don't really make either of them feel inferior to each other (and yeah, the Wii-U version is sure as hell better than the PS3 version). From my experience, I think the 360 version loads slightly faster (taking into account that the game is downloaded to the hard drive, my Wii-U version is not), but the Wii-U version at times doesn't have slow down you'd see in the 360 version. Sometimes the music in the Wii-U version doesn't transition smoothly, which IMO is what sticks out the most between the two. Probably wouldn't even notice if you never owned the game.
Because Bayo1 use Xbox 360 as a lead platform that's why PS3 port is water down because it's really bitch to coding the console always have problem to develops on multiplatform.
kratosgow342 Not really. It was only terrible because Sega outsourced the port to an inexperienced team that did an awful job on it. No other multiplatform game of Platinum's has the same issues.
Wait, big question about her knew hair style... Everyone who played the previous came knows what I'm taking about. This means that... the hair we thought... Ugh...
The kite joke really got me. I think I can sum up my review of this game as: "Do you like Bayonetta 1? Do you want more Bayonetta? Get Bayonetta 2. It's even better than the first."
I... did not like the Demo for Sonic Boom on the 3DS at all. I could go on rants and raves, but I'll just say, it didn't give me any joy what so ever. And didn't make me want to buy the full game.
Ian Smart As Johnny would say... more power to you. I don't mean my comment to devert anyone from getting it. If they want to get it. they should get out there and get it.
Ian Smart Now before you get thinking. "It's the designs." I never hate a game merely for a design change. Unless they change it so much, it's not reconizable as the character it's supposed to be representing. Knuckles is still Red, Knuckles is still a puncher, still the same color shoes, different design shoes, but you can still tell it it Knuckles. My Reason: The game is slow, until you figure out there's a sprint button. Which barely makes you go any faster. I have been hit by enemies more so than not, because I think the homing is another button, because each button does a different thing, at times, I think A is to attack, but it's really Y to attack, so when I go to do the hook thing, I hit Y, when I should be hitting A. I find the game to be visually appealing, but the way it plays, the controls. A game can look and be smooth and shit, but that doesn't count for nothing, if the controls are crap. Once again, these are my opinions, I know people are gonna see my posts as complaining and whining, instead of realising. Instead of realising I wasn't gonna post it to begin with. Or just ignore the fact these are my opinions.
Very nice review john! I usually don't watch your videos my brother is the fan, but upon hearing you were doing bayonetta 2 as well as 1 I had to watch this. I love the series and bayonetta has to be my fave game. You depicted everything accordingly and thanks for a awesome review! 😁
I liked the first bayo so I preordered this game an just feel in love with it. That music was just so good. Oddly enough this game was easier then the first game.
So, basically, playing both games back to back may cause redundancy and, in the worse case, you can get tired of it? I take note Johnny, having Sonic Boom to change the pace might help then ^^
I don't think you'd find it redundant to play both games back to back. Bayonetta 1's pace is at times pretty tame compared to the sequel. You'd have to really not like the gameplay to find it redundant. Meanwhile Bayo2's action is pretty non-stop.
Hmmmm... I like it a lot (except for the QTE lol), then I think it'll be alright^^ I will spread my gameplay time between multiple games anyway (too much for things at once for the end of this year >_< it never happened to me!)
HitsujiMamoru I'll let you in on a little secret about the QTE. In this video when Johnny displays it, there's a little blue ring that surrounds the icon - once that ring hits the icon, that's when you press the button. After that, you'll never miss it. :3
LostChildOfTime I'll take note of that, but the biggest issue I have is that I never anticipate the possibility of one popping up. My mind shall get accustomed to these odds after some times in the game :p then your tip will get in handy! Thank you^^
HitsujiMamoru If you're ever interested, you can also check out my playthrough of Bayo1 on my channel.... from the Witch Hunts alllll the way to the secret boss.
I respect your oppinion Jonny, and don't take this as me criticizing yours, but I disagree on one point: I think that sequels don't necessarily always need to be different from their predecessors. Everything in Bayonetta 2 just feels more polished. hitboxes are placed just right, everything people did not like about the first was removed, new mechanics were added while preserving the old... it's basically like what Super Smash Bros. Melee was to Super Smash Bros. 64, which resulted in the best game Nintendo's ever put out in my oppinion. Sometimes, in an attempt to innovate, companies unfortunately fail miserably. I feel that innovation is good at times, but as the wiimote proved to us, not all change equals innovation.
Funny how you say the story for Bayonetta 1 is nonsensical and unimportant but yet you spend a good chunk of your Sonic reviews talking about their nonsensical and unimportant stories... Just consider cutting back on the amount of time you spend talking about a game's story, I don't really see much point in it. Assuming the story is even good, the only purpose of it is to spoil it for people who haven't played the game yet. And if the story is bad, well then what's the point of talking about it anyway?
Johnny is a huge fan of Sonic. He just can't keep his thoughts inside his mind when it comes to Sonic...although the Sonic Boom review isn't even 15 minutes, which surprises me.
I never played the first Bayonetta game until it came out on demo exclusively on DLC on the Nintendo Wii U during Bayonetta 2 release. But I got both Bayonetta 1 & 2 on the Nintendo Switch and man what a blast. These games are fantastic. Bayonetta 1 is amazing & I really enjoyed it, but Bayonetta 2 is where it's at & it became one of my top 10 favorite games of all time. I love the franchise & I'm looking forward to Bayonetta 3.
I agree feels easier. I only died once and it was against that cheap ass inferno enemy that briefly transforms you into Cerezra and instantly kills you. Otherwise I'd say Bayo 2 is the superior game, they fixed what was wrong added what was good.
I can give you 5 reasons how Bayo2 feels easier than Bayo1. 1. Umbran Climax 2. The Muspelheims are easier than the Alfheims (see #3) 3. No more enemies on fire (they were pretty annoying, but they may as well have left them in game because of #1) 4. No more enemies that bypass witch time (R.I.P. Gracious & Glorious) 5. Non-stop Infinite Climax difficulty no longer bans Witch Time And for a bonus, you never have to protect Loki (idk why he has a health bar, it goes absolutely nowhere - and what if he dies?), though you had to protect Cereza at some point. There are also other things like in Bayo2, you're no longer penalized for using items... however, the enemies will taunt you for it.
Ixbran That was the last thing I said. :P Personally, I think that really breaks the game as far as magic lolipops are concerned. (Health ones, I'm cool with because you lose points for getting hit anyway.) You can just concoct a bunch of magic lolipops, pop umbran climax and destroy everything... well, almost everything. But that's a choice to make the game easier for yourself as you can also choose to make it more difficult still. There just aren't that many things that make the game more challenging compared to Bayo1. It's still good in the end. In 3rd Climax, enemies that can dodge such as bosses won't dodge your Umbran Climax attacks, but in NSIC... they'll dodge your bullshit... most of it anyway.
Allen The Ultimate Gamer Resentment in Bayo2 has an attack that turns Bayo into a baby and if you let them grab you, it's game over. You probably won't notice this unless you've played the game on NSIC.
I also was very surprised by playing the Bayonetta 2 demo, I had never played Bayonetta 1 and I needed to buy the combo. Playing the game now. Love you review!
For all the reviews I've seen on youtube, Johnny is the only one that I've been waiting for reviewing the Sonic boom. Prepare yourself, friend. We warned ya! xD
I just find it interesting that I found the game reletively easy to understand, and I'm not amazing at character action games. But when I let my friend play it, she died a lot and forgotten the controls half of the time. She got stone in the prologue.
Thank you very much for this review, Johnny. I bought Bayonetta 1 and 2 just because it looked interesting to me. I'm not the biggest hack&slash fan, yet I really enjoyed the first game. Now playing the second. Still a bit lost. But it's growing on me.
Sonic Boom Shattered Crystal demo was actually rather fun in my opinion. I'm looking forward to buying the game on Black Friday this year or I'll hopefully be getting it for Christmas.
