Me too ! the album version is one the best most diverse and complex blues guitar compositions I've ever heard. this is my first time hearing a live version ...thanks much
First time I've seen a Mustang used for blues and it sounds damn good too. I'm digging the earthy "chunk" he gets from the guitar/amp combination. I have a sunburst Pawnshop Mustang Special with splitable Humbuckers; not a blues style guitar I'm told but hearing Johnny here, I dunno man...
I can't thank you enough for posting this. I've killed the album version, but have never heard it live. My God, he could cook. This song always reminds me of Couldn't Stand the Weather, by SRV, who had to have been influenced by Johnny.
saw him at the FIllmore East December 1969, back up act was Chicago with their second lp just out. Johnny killed it, even brought out Edgar for Tobacco Road if I recall right. Chicago had a wall of Marshalls but sounded exactly like the albums, basically like listening to a loud stereo lp set up.
Maybe it's 'cause I'm in my 70s and my hearing shows the wear of decades of loud, hard driving rock n' roll, but seems to me Tommy Shannon fell right off of the sound board on this recording. If anyone knows of a better live recording of Memory Pain I'd appreciate a link.
