All these EV truck tests and races makes this the greatest EV truck series to ever be done and recorded to this point in history. And EV trucks should all have their port on the right front to accommodate pull in charging while towing on V3's and other chargers. Even Tesla fails by not placing their own Cybertruck's port there. We know that pull through stalls will take quite a few years to propagate all throughout the country. And of course, all should be 800v with backwards compatibility with 400v chargers. Either by splitting the pack in two, or a proper on-board DC charger that provides at least 200kw charging on them.
@Nebula1701
@Nebula1701 6 месяцев назад
What everyone is missing is the port location is really dependent on charging equipment location in the truck and the shortest cable run into the battery. It becomes a packaging and efficiency issue with longer runs needing thicker wires.

@oof_Dad
@oof_Dad 6 месяцев назад
What do you you think you gain from over 250 kw speed? A few minutes from 0-30%, everything over that is below 250 anyway. Holding 250 kw longer/deeper will increase speed more. 800v is better for cost but cells still limit charge curve.
@tazeat
@tazeat 6 месяцев назад
Uh 350kW is 40% more speed over 250kW putting a lot more area under the curve for that part off the charge? The 4WT doesn't taper until like 35%, that's a whole MY LR battery before it even starts to slow. It doesn't go below 250kW until after 60%. Big boy curve. 250kW@400V=625A, which makes some pretty serious heat loss in just the wiring. It just doesn't make a lot of sense for trucks when you need to put in real energy.

@@tazeat true, the Silverado is on another level with that huge pack. Didn't realize how long it held 350. 250 is fine for the others but that monster pack has a LOT of curve over 250. Should have watched till that part before commenting 😬.
@Paul-cj1wb
@Paul-cj1wb 6 месяцев назад
Yep. Check out the 2025 Taycan curve. It stays over 300kw past 62% and then above 200kw till 76%. It can do that because 800v keeps everything around the pack so much cooler and it's so much easier to cool the cells. Most people can't understand that no matter how much you explain it to them. For example, the Taycan never went past 130F while the 250kw speed of new Model X (400v) with it's tremendous curve all the way to 31% reached 140F by that time. And the new Model X and S are charging monsters. But 800v simply takes it to another level. That's the future of all EVs, but especially for trucks. No trucks going forward can afford to be 400v.

@@arbiter1 Good catch. He could have shortened it a bit by going to 80% since it's real slow after that so I guess a 45 minute stop is realistic or 1 hour if you need the extra range like he did. I see how the Tesla semi using a 1000kW charger now makes sense. With out a trailer, that's a gas equivalent road tripper. 1 normal lunch stop to charge and 2 400 mile driving legs. With a trailer, not equivalent yet. I tow electric and the biggest pain for me is not the frequency of stops, but having to unhitch to charge most times. I kind of agree. From a technological perspective, it’s not impressive, anybody can pack 200kWh in a truck and get their range. From a range perspective alone, it’s great. From a towing perspective it still stinks because the lack of pull through chargers. From a price perspective, it prices out 99% of people. People were so gung-ho to criticize the Chevy Bolt EV that they completely overlooked the fact that GM has had some of the best, most dialed-in blended and regenerative braking systems of any automaker since 2017. I know some people prefer the regen configurations from other automakers, but most of that seems to stem from personal preferences and a desire for coasting, which is unnecessary if you have proper blended breaking and cruise control.

Best blended brakes I've ever experienced was the Mitsubishi I-MiEV. Took a trained ear to tell when the friction brakes engaged because you can't tell by feel, it's that smooth. 1st gen Volt was okay, 1st gen LEAF was horrible, but I couldn't give an honest answer about the Bolt EV because I max out regen before pressing the brake pedal. The friction brakes alone come in smoothly, although they are underpowered to stop the Bolt on their own. There is always Neutral for coasting, which doesn't put the drivetrain at risk in an EV since nothing mechanically disconnects. For hypermiling though, the more aerodynamic the car, the less benefit coasting provides, especially if a permanent magnet motor is used. Induction motors can benefit more since neutral completely shuts off the drive inverter and cuts power consumption whereas permanent magnet motors must remain powered.

It's good to have an EV truck designed with longer distances in mind. I suspect, as time goes on, people will think more about whether they need all that battery or not. I guess the question is, if only 10% of truck drivers ever tow, what percent THINK they need a truck that will tow long distances? This will determine the market size for big battery trucks. Of course, part of the consideration will be resale value. Even if I don't need to tow, my truck will hold value better in the long run if it can.

At a US average gas pump rate of 13 gallons per minute, my 40mpg Avalon hybrid can take on a full circumnavigation of the Earth (24,000 miles) worth of fuel in a little over 46 minutes. (Just not all at once. I'd have to make 39 stops of about 74 seconds each and drive 400 hours at 60mph.) I'm impressed with the Silverado's 350Kw charging speed, but EV's still have a long way to go to road trip like an ICE powered vehicle. Keep the great videos coming though. I'm enjoying watching the amazing progress EVs are making!
@randr10
@randr10 5 месяцев назад
The surge brakes on these uhaul trailers might actually hurt range on the electric trucks because the brakes come on any time the tow vehicle slows whether you want it to or not. They work great and they're super smooth for towing but you don't want friction brakes coming on when you're doing regen only. I would assume that the manufacturers designed these to not apply the electric trailer brakes during regen. There's a solenoid that bypasses the brakes when your tow vehicle reverse lights come on, so there may be a way to trick that into happening on the tow vehicle during regen, but I don't know if the engineers thought of that. I would assume they didn't.

Like it or not, there are more V3 stalls/dispensers out there than ALL other stalls/dispensers combined. In fact, more than 4 times more than all other Fast DC charging ports.
