Hey everyone, ARNE & CARLOS here!
In this RU-vid video, we're taking you on a virtual tour of Heimen Husfliden, a fantastic store in Oslo that's a haven for yarn enthusiasts and lovers of traditional Norwegian crafts. Join us as we explore the diverse offerings, from exquisite Norwegian yarns to beautiful handmade folk costumes and silver accessories.
We are joined by Malene from Heimen Husflid. She guides us through the store, sharing insights into the rich tradition of Norwegian wool and the wide array of yarns available. We also explore the various components of Norwegian folk costumes, or bunads, and the store's emphasis on handmade garments. From belts and buttons to intricate embroidery, Heimen is a treasure trove for those seeking authentic and beautifully crafted pieces.
Malene sheds light on the meticulous process of obtaining a custom-made bunad, discussing the measurements, fittings, and the time it takes to create this symbol of Norwegian identity.
Our journey continues through the store, showcasing the extensive selection of products, including shirts, hats, and accessories that complement the bunad ensemble. We also touch on the challenges and joys of maintaining and enlarging vintage bunads, sharing personal experiences.
Don't forget to give this video a thumbs up if you enjoyed the tour, subscribe to our channel, and click on the notification bell to stay updated with our latest content. This video brings back such lovely memories for me. I LOVED my visit to that store when I was in Oslo for the Knitting Cruise last year! I bought some yarn, ribbon and buttons to finish my Trasskofte. All the Husfliden shops are beautiful and each on is different and has items specific to that region. I see Marlene is wearing the gorgeous Agnes Kofte by Kristin Wiola Ødegård! That's on my list of sweaters I want to make this year out of the beautiful Hillesvåg yarns! Maybe I can finish it before I come back to Norway in October.

Such an interesting video today. Whilst I don't have the need to make a traditional costume, I certainly would buy some of those buttons, ribbons and wool. I'm sure you didn't walk out empty handed, and just maybe Arne made a stop or two at a thrift shop on the way home. 😁 X

This episode almost made me cry. I certainly burst with joy remembering my visit to that store at the beginning of my Arne and Carlos Norwegian Adventure last February. This is where I met Rachel (buying Hillesvåg yarn, of course), not knowing she would also be on the cruise. It’s also where I bought my copy of your Julekuler book in Norwegian. I would love to go back someday. Thanks for the wonderful memories ❤

Wow, this was very enlightening. It is so good to see you honour those traditions. And I can imagine that when I ever visit I certainly will buy something nice, although a bunad is very expensive and all what should accompany it even more. And I think you should keep it for the local people, as Norwegian people have to follow it, if they care for it and it seems they do. I really admire all the craft involved and this was such a treat. Thanks for sharing and I find myself so enriched by seeing your beautiful clothes.

Thanks for the tour! It brings back wonderful memories when I was in Oslo on my first visit. I did buy some Hillesvag yarns and some beautiful accessories for my kitchen. I was looking at the beautiful cabled, raglan turtleneck sweater at the end of your video. As you were signing off it was just behind you in a lovely cinnamon colour. I'm betting someone watching may know the name of the pattern! Likely a pattern from Rauma or Hillesvag ❤

My heart is so full seeing this favorite of Oslo. Everyone is so helpful and knowledgeable. Of course the yarn is simply a small introduction to what awaits those fortunate ones who get to visit both Hillesvag and Rauma factories like we did during our A&C cruises in 2019 and 2023 but the Heimem Husfliden is the very best collection of knitting books. Purusing those books kept me occupied for at least a couple of hours. Thank you so much for sharing your visit and bringing me back to a place that will always remain very dear to me. With many hugs. As an 18yr old English au-pair I shopped in Glasmagasinet and also, as I recall then, Husfliden was its own store full of yarn and beautiful homeware. This was in 1974/1975. I thought Oslo and Norway the most magical of places. I remember the Munch Museum and the Palace and Vigeland Park and most of all the lovely Norwegian people that I met. Very happy days and wonderful memories.

Earlier today, I read about a new and exciting library in Oslo. You MUST go there! (I am a retired librarian and enjoyed your Japan trip recently). The five-storey Deichman Bjørvika library has a cafe, restaurant, media workshops, auditorium, recording studios, a mini cinema, lounges and gaming zones. “Norway’s biggest bookshelf,” its then director, Knut Skansen, said, “is truly a library for the future.”
