JoJo - Does Araki Hate Dogs? 

The amount of people who think artists endorse everything that happens in their works is absurd to me. He kills dogs to make people hate the villains who kill dogs, this is storytelling 101.

By this logic, due to the high mortality rate of the characters wearing ridiculous clothing, we can confirm that Araki hates fashion models.

1) Araki has that dawg in him 2) Araki doesn't hate his own guts Therefore, Araki doesn't hate dogs

I always thought Araki kept having villains kill dogs because it was an easy way to signify to the audience “Yeah, don’t feel bad for this guy at all when he suffers an incredibly painful death later”

The fact that Kars saves a dog from dying should make clear that Araki doesn't hate dogs. It makes the other villains more hateable and selfish, while showing Kars' ideals of hating humanity and loving nature

Araki's heavy use of dog death in the first parts of Jojo, is most likely from his love of Spaghetti Westerns. There's a trope in fiction writing called a "kicking the dog moment." where during a bad guy's introduction, he'll injure an animal of some type. This is done to show the characters default is being malicious and brutal, while also not needing to have him commit a severe crime. Usually done so the bad guy can still have a dialogue with the other characters. Spaghetti Westerns where the birth place of this trope, and are used very heavily. So there's no doubt this is another result of Araki's near obsessive passion for his inspirations.

Finally, the question we all want the answer to

The easiest way to convey a character is evil , is to make him do evil things,like hurt animals ... that's why this trope is called "Kick the Dog"

I think the phasing out of killing dogs also shows Araki's growth as a writer. Hurting or killing animals is kind of a cheap, inelegant way to make someone hate a villain. Outside of shock value, it doesn't really present much of a use. And if Araki had kept relying on it, sooner or later, the reader would get desensitized to it. Then you'd need to get more and more crude and vile with it to achieve the same effect, and - well, it's better to try a variety of ways to get an audience invested in a villain's downfall than to make them look at the logical conclusion to the alternative.

Imagine you’re an exchange student studying abroad in Japan. You get settled into your host family’s home. You’re a little nervous, but you’re marginally confident in your ability to speak Japanese. You go for a walk around the neighborhood to get your bearings. Suddenly, a weird man jumps of of the bushes with a BB gun aimed at a horde of stray cats, screaming something about “the thrill of the hunt”

About cats being evil, in Part 5 there's that story Mista tells about a cat injuring a boy's eye

Other moments of cats being mistreated in JoJo's are when Joseph in part 2 for no apparent reason knocks a cat to the ground with a trip, or Enya hitting a cat on the head when she suffers her son's pain.

I always understood it to be joke. You know: "haha, a lot of dogs die, must mean the mangaka HATES THEM!" An exaggerated remark to point at something of note, as in the west we do not really see dogs being treated like that. I did not think that anyone actually believed it

The instant you see Dio strike Danny, you instantly don't like him despite having previously had a montage of how rough a life he had and, by all intents, you should be hoping his lot in life improves. This is compounded infinitely more when Danny is outright killed in a very sadistic manner. This is followed with Yellow Temperance mercilessly killing the pup for no reason other than the user being an arrogant prick, thus making Jotaro's merciless beating and victory over him all the more satisfying. In nearly every instance that a dog is killed by a villain, it's a method to make you hate the villain as much as possible before the Hero is "unchained" and shows no mercy, often killing said villain in return for how wicked they have become.

As a storywritter, this is 100% true, having evil characters doing things that people, and even yourself doesn't normally like it is a very good to show how evil a character is and give the audience a hatred for that specific character.

Araki consistently uses dogs to demonstrate particularly evil characters. The dogs that die are supposed to shock you, because Araki considers killing a dog a particularly bad thing to do. Dogs like Iggy and the ghost dog are portrayed as hero. I think Araki really, really likes dogs.

Kick the dog is just an easy trope to establish a villain

Weird I always heard it as Araki loves dogs so much he uses it as a measurement for how evil someone is. So only bad people hurt dogs in JoJo. Also I never knew how much I needed to hear about Araki beefing with the neighbourhood cats.😂

Does Araki hate babies? I'm sure not, but you do have Mannish in part 3 and another baby in another one of his series that both were villains in some way. I'm just saying this because I weirdly never gave the dogs much thought and only noticed the babies.

As a kid a dog bullied him and stole his lunch money. With that, Araki decides to put his fantasy of killing dogs into his works as revenge.

In the Part 6 anime there's a dog with the group that is affected by Survivor in the flashback where Dio is explaining how its ability works, but the dog isn't shown in the manga so the anime added an additional dead dog to the count

I like to think that Araki isn't afraid to take a step over the norm and display the types of stuff that would make a normal person uncomfortable.

My favorite part of this video is the interview with Araki admitting to stalking his neighbours' cats. Makes sense when you consider the other interview with his wife in which she talks about that Araki is like a middle schooler, playing pranks on his neighbours and being overall extemely silly

There's also the problem I've seen from Dog owners, like myself, who react to what Araki feeds the dogs. One of the first things we see Johnathan do with Danny, is feed him some grapes, which are HIGHLY toxic to dogs, and can cause their kidneys to shutdown almost instantly in severe cases. Then there's Iggy with his Coffee Bubblegum, two other food stuffs that can kill dogs. Sadly, Araki's lack of knowledge on how to raise a dog, has made him seem worse than he is.

Dogs and Cats dying is sad sure! But how about the birds? The live chicken eaten by The Empress; as well as the unknown fate of Avdol’s chickens Michael, Prince and Lionel. Then there was the sparrow eaten by Stray Cat after he blasted it with air! Poor little sparrow…. Of course the most famous bird death was Pet Shop; and he was a villain! I've always thought of Araki hating dogs as a joke rather than actual fact. Even Araki himself seemed to poke fun at this during part 4 when Rohan had to deal with Cheap Trick. I WAS suprised to realise he didn't like cats very much, despite always hearing cat people and dog people don't see eye to eye, just like cats and dogs themselves. I don't know if he could get along with fellow mangaka Hiro Mashima.

I think one relatively quick topic that I would like covered is the differences and purposes between Locacaca fruit varieties. I might be just dense but my first read led me really confused as to what was going on in Jojolion thinking “wait why do they want the Locacaca if they see people getting affected in negative ways or even killed by it” and the difference between the new Locacaca lead me to get totally confused when seeing Rai slice the “old” locacaca, not fully understanding how the new Locacaca was rarer and actually helpful to potentially curing the rock disease or Holly. Also briefly mention infront the translation flub between Rokakaka and Locacaca would be great

Much like "Araki forgot", "Araki hates dogs" feels like a joke that got really out of hand and started being taken way too seriously by some fans. It is pretty ironic he dislikes cats, though

To be fair, 18% is probably higher than the average death rate of dogs in most shows.

This reminds me of when Young Joseph made a cat trip into the ground for his personal pleasure. I found that extremely weird for Joseph. But I get it that in Part 2, Araki planned a lot of jokes and made some parts of the script follow what would match with the joke. That's why some people found Part 2 and Joseph more funny in comparison.

Leaving Araki aside (since we all know he doesen't hate dogs), i'd like to think about the dogs dying in JoJo itself. I think the main problem is the repetition of such a specific resource. I feel like we're more sensitive when it comes to dogs, kids, or old people dying, so if for example Araki had killed more babies after Part 1, it would have may also be pointed out. Whenever something is repeated too much, people will notice, and if they notice it too much and make fun of it, then it's not working as a writing resource. Same thing with Berserk and r*pe. Some of the dog death scenes are amazingly horrifying and work perfectly to build what Araki wants to tell, (my "favorite" one is the two dogs Pet Shop kills. I think it truly introduces Pet Shop as a horrifying enemy), but most of people's reaction are "Seriously? Again?!" and in my opinion, if you overuse a resource so much that it can take some of the audience out of what it's trying to tell, it's a problem. Which is why it's great from a writing point of view that Araki stopped doing it, in my opinion

When I was about 6, my family adopted 2 cats. One was ok, but the other kept hissing at me and occupying my room without letting me go inside. My parents ended up giving it back to original owners after it shat in my bed- I guess a day of having their son tormented wasn't a big problem, but stinky shit on a bed broke the camel's back. Maybe they thought I was overreacting until that happened.

I always assume when stuff like this happens in the JoJo community, it’s always when a joke becomes so overblown that people not in on the joke take it fact. Like the joke with Jonathan saying that he was going to haunt Dio being turned into the Star Platinum is Jonathan’s ghost thing

while i definitely think they are extreme can see what araki means by them making you hate the villains i don't find it hard to believe it not only from 1st impressions but also how brutal they get(definitely for a much as i love dio was when i thought "yeah whatever death he gets he 100% deserves it from that alone" as i still remember saying holy sh*t to poor danny's manga death.). looking back on it the last dogs that died did show their loyalty helping stop the villains that killed them(arnold/iggy) and outside a few cats are jerks in jojo like darby's,technically mariah as her glory god was bastet and killer queen/that garden story definitely sounds like an inspiration for stray cat.

Easiest way to set a character up as pure evil is to kill someone that's purely good or innocent but if that's a human character they have to be set up as good but dogs are naturally innocent
