A similar way I am learning to feel polyrhythms like 4:5, 3:5, 4:7, 2:3:4 is to use any free online polyrhythm metronome and, mechanically memorize how it feels and then as soon as I start to internationalize it, I immediately jump into playing with different sounds and "feels". It really is like learning to speak, it's a new way to share and explore oneself. Also, I know there is a lot of polyrhythmic music on RU-vid to reference. Off the top of my head some good search topics would be: - Congo drumb music - Peruvian music - Pakistani music - traditional Chinese music (not the "relaxing spa meditation" stuff)

I'm not a drummer but I love learning from them. I've really grown to love jojos approach and playing style. This eas very informative and deep. Hes worthy of bring on the world stage with his work ethic. No one gets that good and descriptive without their 10,000 hours of practice alone.

I like German audiences, if this had been at a clinic at home, half the time would have been spent clapping and shouting every time he hit a drum.

I'm sure it's a saying somewhere or a quote, but it always rings in my head while people explain things in front of a group. "If you can't explain it simply/easily, you don't truly understand it" About the only thing I can explain fluently and easily is how cars work and how air traffic works. lol.

Ok excellent Jojo! The 1st thing I hear and see in this video is that JoJo starts with the easy + math friendly polyrhythm of 6over4 then he creates a polyrhythmic "beat" in 6 over 4 and then goes with the polyrhythm part (on the hi hat) and begins a new (faster) beat with that (polyrhythm - metric modulation). This is a great example of "Metric Modulation" (in this case 1&1/2 times faster )You can probably hear a wealth of new possibilities when all this begins to happen in your own head. Let me recommend two books where all the (Polyrhythms-Polymeters-and times faster than the original beat Metric Modulation) it is clearly explained and graduated in the logical poly-meters and polyrhythms that do & are meant to exist with each other. Two books recommended (1) Polyrhythms The Musicians Guide ( Hal Leonard publishing) peter/magadini - explaines & goes thru all the polyrhythms with single line examples ans patterns. (Polyrhythms:The Musicians Guide ): Peter Magadini Amazon.com - Amazon.com : polyrythms the musicians guide The other one is called: Polyrhythms For The Drumset (Alfred Publishing) peter/magadini This book is all about polyrhythms at the drums and how to get to the point where you can co-ordinate polyrhythms between hands and feet while keeping a beat. Plus metric modulation & more. (Polyrhythms for the Drumset): Amazon.com - Polyrhythms for the Drumset: Book & CD:Magadini, Peter: 0029156176780: Amazon.com: Books

Always be aware the motions of your limbs make the sounds and the patterns, not the other way around. When you go to play anything, the memory of the motion in your hands and feet is the first thing the brain executes. The brain says, "If I squeeze the stick like this or make this movement/motion it will produce this sound/rhythm". Practice is not leaning rhythms, practice is learning movements and motions that make rhythms. In memory of Freddy Grubber.

If either of your limbs is in "motion" playing a constant pattern, then playing any other limb in between the notes in the pattern can produce a poly-rhythm. The motion is the key. Hard to explain but not as difficult as the mind wants to make it.

this is the stuff that captivates me most about drumming, metric modulation, that's why I love vinnie, because he always does it effortlessly and in a musical way. Gavin is great at it too. Only problem is, I can't modulate for shit, i just can't do the switching between metrics like they do, but one day maybe.......

@Audi0Phil Yeah it's kinda like when I would play bass, I would just stick to the rule "as long as it sounds right"; as in losen up the rythm and tone mathematic estimations so you can be a little off while in the end still be on track - you're in between of on-the-fly and 1 or 2 segments ahead in what you intend to do however that's where this part becomes more intuition and confidence after practicing different phrasings, as Jojo kinda said in fact. Man I just said something for nothing ^^

good tip is to dont play the 4/4 basic beat yourself and just listen to it while you "jam" or "fiddle" or "groove" and play around in that free space to get the "feel" inside your body while going around your brain.. hope that makes sense to you, cant describe it better.. greetings from germany : ) mario

metric modulation . . . the final step in drumming before you start to sound like a bunch of people in guitar center trying to play different drum beats at the same time. XD
@BadMilkhotel
@BadMilkhotel 2 месяца назад
I always think of it as " every song has a heart beat". You know what that heart beat is. You can manipulate around that heart beat all you want. I would never be able to play the drums if I had to think.. ok, this needs to be subdivided or it won't work. You don't need to know the math.. you need to be able to feel it.

LORD DOOM Marco's technical knowledge and abilities are very high - one of the best . But his feel still on the amateur level. Have heard a lot of indigestible rhythms from him. You just listen and think - don't you hear it doesn't fit here and it has no vibe at all. So Marco should improve his feel drastically to be on one level with Jojo.
