In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens ru-vid.comUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.
Looks like you are very close to having the trolling motor mounted in a way that your hatch it blocks will open. Might want to try adding a board underneath it and extending its base over the front edge of the boat.
I did virtually the same thing to a john boat in the 70's. It was a little bigger and deeper than normal because it had been designed for the La.Wildlife and Fisheries so they could sample traps nets etc. so upon becoming the owner I actually made my deck platforms because the back bench was only a half seat. The best part was that it had a 48" bottom and nearly 2' deep. Had an old chrysler outboard which never faltered but I did replace it with a new 50 Merc. Yours looks good and I enjoyed your build. I smiled at it because it brought back some very fond memories of nearly 50 years ago. I put bass seat pedestals on mine but yours looks better; I did mine in blue. Used her nearly 10 years before I bought a store bought model.
I did a similar project on the exact same boat (14' alumacraft) except mine had a 9.9 hp motor. With mine I just added a plywood deck covered in carpet with chair mounts. No frame and no compartments. It was made to be removable. It made the boat heavy and sluggish. I ended up pulling it out. One of the nice things about a jon boat is the light weight. I think you'll need a bigger boat and motor if you add 200 pounds of wood to the front of the boat.
I just bought a Jon 1040 Lund... Just, just got it...pack away in my snowy yard in Ottawa, CA as I wait on my 5HP Honda (and spring melt). After seeing this, I wanna sell it. I'm absolutely not able to do this. Dude, that's crazy beautiful!!!
On the front casting deck where u have your hatches in the bottom u should make like a box under the hatches so u can put tackle and tackle boxes there
You did absolutely great. I got given a old jon boat for free. It has some dents and it’s not in the best condition but I’m modeling it after yours. I’ve gotten almost all of the dents out im panting it and I’m making a deck. I’ll also have a fish finder and carpet and a trolling motor and a outboard motor. I’ve using ur boat as inspiration and as a “guide” to make mine. I won’t be able to do as much as yours cause yours is awesome but it’s a guide. Again thank you and you have done an great job.
For someone that "didnt know what they were doing and didnt have plans" you sure did hit this build out of the park, brutha. Impressive! Makes me want to convert my job boat. You should hook up a small solar panel as well.
great boat, i just watched the 40min full boat build, i thought man thats a long video, likely going to just skip around but let me tell you that was the first full boat build i watched all the way through. awesome job.
I would just suggest getting two small solar panels off Amazon to clamp to your batteries for long days on the water, GREAT BUILD, you gave this old man some ideas for my build
I’m not a fisherman, but I thought it was an interesting build. Looks like you did a great job on it. If I had something like that, I would become a fisherman.
Great build. Could you please tear those bunks off your trailer??? Please. 3/4 inch marine plywood . 2x4s on the side. It becomes the best drive on/ float off trailer for a jon boat
GREAT JOB. 3- Questions. 1- How did you anchor your decks down. 2- How do you put fuel in the tank. 3- In the future are you going to add a standup casting seat up front?
The front deck is such a tight fit that it sits under the lip of the boat and doesn’t move, the back deck frame is screwed into the transom and the deck is screwed to the deck frame, and I have a funnel with a long tube that reaches the gas tank, and yes, if I knew better I would of added it to this build but definitely going on the next build
I really like the deck you made , and the switch box for the lights is very cool too . I’m going to buy a 1436 on Monday . I might try to copy your front deck a little . I will keep it a little more simple because I need to be able to put it in the back of my truck . Some of the places I want to fish you can’t have a trailer or outboard . Nice boat you did a great job .
The military term is OD Green for the paint. My boat was painted the same color by the previous owner and his reasoning was because the color blends in well with most waters and especially in our area where the lakes are mud bottom and turn green very quickly as the water warms up. I like the idea of the strap handles you did vs just drilling a hole in the lid for your finger. I thought about that but then realized how much crap would get inside the storage area then.
For a battery charge go to harbor freight and pick up the solar panel charge kit you can modify the wiring to eyelid connectors and not have to worry aboot battery drain it’s a worth while investment for aboot 15-50$
change the prop on your trolling motor if you want more or less speed. three blade would be more speed. they make smaller 2 blade props which would make you go slower
I see you’ve built a few of these. Probably perform well on RU-vid. But as someone that just discovered these builds. I would recommend painting future builds different colors. Because I thought they were all the same boat when RU-vid was recommending them.
An awesome build. I watched all the videos up to this point. However, I do have questions that I asked in a couple of your videos. 1. Why isn't the bilge pump on the switch panel? Found it. you moved the battery and hooked it up. 2. Why isn't the fish finder on the switch panel? Now you have an extra battery to worry about. 3. Wiring. If I'm reading you correctly. The main wire from the battery goes to the fuse box. Only one hot wire and ground goes to the switch box. The light wires (red) goes to the switch box and all the black wires from the lights go to the fuse box. Do I have that correct? 4. I figured out the kill switch and where that goes.
I think you did a dam good job brother. I got a 1976 gregor and you inspired me to do a make over. Thank you for taking the time to make your video. Fish on!!. John in Colorado
A basic modern fish finder will also tell you the speed of your boat. * I store a basic tool set in my storage department along with more rope due to Murphy's law and my past boating experiences.
This is a sick boat someone you can say you did and plus if you ever get reasz for a bigger boat you can get $5,500 for it and with that buy a nice older bass boat
Definitely something to be very proud of. Nicely done sir. There is one minor thing that I would recommend but no biggie, When you mention to have extra people in your boat, you might want to put maybe a couple of hand grippers on the side of the boat for them to hold on to. Just a thought there but over all great job.
I think it’s great!!! Your outboard is sitting a bit low! Use that thing that the engine is sitting on to adjust the engine up! Just slide the gray thingy up and then bolt it to the red thingy. The usual rule is make the cavitation plate on the engine level with the bottom of the boat. Then raise the engine up until the propeller starts to cavitate. Then go back down to the last position.
Man, great job! I watched the full build & it looked to me like you must have done this before or actually worked for a boat builder. I may have used a sheet of diamond plate aluminum for the floor to cut down on weight
Amazing build my man. I really enjoyed following your channel. Currently building up my old bass boat and taking notes on your build. Thank you for the awesome content brother 👍🏼
Not including tools, how much does this roughly cost? I'm wondering how much cheaper it is than a Bass Tracker XL. Maybe even make it electric. Lake Pflugerville allows electric boats supposedly. Can you get a trailer with surge brakes for a 14' jon boat?
Since you used 2 x4's as your framing for the front deck, what did you use to seal the wood and prevent it from moisture and water damage? Very nice job.
