There's only a few guys I'll ever ask what they got because I've played with them forever and I know the exact offsets (for example, one friend is exactly 1.5 clubs longer than me). Most amateurs should just play the number to the back of the green. Simple.

To add to this, what really lowered my handicap into the single digits I’m at now is, if you can’t execute the shot 6 or 7 times out of ten, don’t try to hit it. Simplify your approach and you’ll have way less blow up holes.

I am a 5 handicap and I flush my irons maybe 6/10 times. Which makes club selection difficult. I played this morning and had 180 uphill, hit 5 iron which is a 190 club for me to allow for the uphill and flew it over the green into trouble behind, and had to take a penalty drop. I think people need to take more notice of what’s the better miss short or long and go with that.

So the green was less than 10 yards from the middle to the back? Were you flag hunting a pin in the very back of the green? Your story doesn't make any sense. Typically you would have to overcook it at least 20 yards to fly a green. I'm calling bs and that you don't have a good grasp on how far your irons go which is strange considering you claim to be a 5 handicap. Nothing adds up here 😂

Spot on. Using a device to track your actual distances is an eye opener and will give you the info needed to hit more greens! Also the vast majority of players underestimate wind and temperature effects. Quick DIY: If it's 50F outside, add 6% to all your yardages (meaning 150 shot is actually 158).

Ego and ignorance play a lot into poor decision making by amateur golfers. I see it all the time. So many clubs are completely different from each other, lofts and design being the most obvious. I've been fitted for everything from a 36 degrees 7i and hit it an average of 140yrds, then a 29 degrees 7i and hit it 180yrds! Then there's the ball and the individual hitting them, then the conditions at the time and how they're feeling on the day! I really wish that all manufacturers would at least state the loft on the club. I go to the range every time I buy new clubs, hit a heap of balls with each club, take the average and then write all of my lofts and my distances for them on the shafts with a marker pen, then sellotape over it to protect it. You memorise them over time, but it's a really good exercise to do.

If I’m stiff and find myself not being super accurate because I am trying to power the ball there instead of being smooth. I’ll club up. I could care less about what my playing partners may think because I’m playing my own game. You have nobody to impress in the game of golf. It doesn’t matter if you drive the ball 250 or 300. I was a PGA club pro in my early 20s, but was really scrawny so wasn't very long. (I weighed 130 pounds) But I'd see this all the time with people I was playing with. They'd grab a 9 iron for a 160 yard shot, I'd grab my 7 iron. They'd rip on me, but they'd wind up 15 yards short, and I'd be pin high. Eventually I put on some weight, so now I'm considerably longer, but don't let pride force you to make poor club selection. The game isn't who can hit the ball the longest, it's getting the ball in the hole. Plus, practice your damn short game.

I’ll say never look or base your club selection based on someone else game. Just because your buddy is blasting a 9 or 8 but that’s because they can’t hit 5 through 2. The reality is based on your natural swing your distance will come. Personally I think the two most important irons to master as a weekend golfer are 8 and 6. 8 is the best high drop club and if your good with a 9 your ok. The reason I say 6 over 7 is the trajectory. 6 is one of the best irons for most second shots as a weekend golfer for those type courses. If you smoke it you get in the 170s. if you learn to control it, will become a dominant 160s club which is perfect. I see all these cats shanking hybrids or a 5 wood. Get good with a 6 then a 5 iron. If you can hit a 5 iron no tee that’s when your ready to try woods. Ask any pro they will ask, how well do you hit your 5 iron.

I met you hook or slice the shit out of your misses. Everybody knows a full normal swing gives you the best chance of solid contact. Learn to listen to what the pro actually says. Hit more club and swing normal. Your misses will be dead on and your flush shots will be back of the green. If you fly the green you had too much club to start with in what's will get you to the middle of the green.

@@yaboylevi Never heard of someone talking about sending it with an iron. Send it where? To the next hole? You send a driver or three wood. The irons are designed for precise distances. Stop swinging light or hard and just swing the club normal and set your target distance to something past the hole on most approach shots

My younger brother always brags about his club distances all being a bit longer than mine. He borrowed my clubs last week and found out he actually hits the same distances with in a few yards as me. Turns out his clubs are stroger lofted.

I hit an 8 iron 355 yards once, so i am in big trouble. If you ever played the 10th Hole at Craigmillar Park in Edinburgh you will know how that is possible.

Managing your own expectations is key. It takes a while to humble yourself especially if you’re good at other sports. It tickles me when the low caliber players I play with throw big tantrums on the greens when they miss 12 foot putts. Like they think that’s easy and reading the greens is too formal for a casual round.

Most amateur golfers think the game is all about hitting long. It’s about scoring low and using all 14 clubs.

That's how I feel when I play golf. Dudes are pulling a 9 iron and I'm reaching for a 7 or 6

I usual play my 8 iron from 180 out 😮

Yah that’s good in theory (if you miss) but if you do flush it, you could be screwed going long.
@BradleyZoellner

I agree with this, but then when I’m clubbed up I get so nervous of going long. In my head I’m like, surely this isn’t going to be pure and compressed and sail the green right? And then I hit a bad shot anyways 😂

Idk. My 8 iron goes reliably 175. My issue is accuracy. Its either on the money or left. But every once in a while i top it 50 yards.

I’ve stopped caring about yardage, especially seems how these days, I only play like 6000-something yard courses. Striping the ball 250 off the tee consistently and consistency over all are what I care about

Most amateurs don’t know their true yardages and always overestimate their abilities…. I have mine listed on a table on my golf cart and it keeps things real…more club when it’s cold and damp, less club when it warm and dry….it’s not rocket surgery!

A lot of ego with distances. My driver is about 240, sometimes I can really pipe one 270 or longer but that is probably 1 out of 20 good shots. One of my best shots is an 80 yard low flying 8 iron pitch that runs, I prefer that shot over a wedge almost every time when the hole allows it.

i hit an 8 iron off the tee on a par 3 that was 150 metres to the flag with severe down wind and got it pin high. ever since then i realised my 150 metre club is a 7 on a good day and a 6 on a bad day.
@jrodgers211

I learned 7 is my 155 club cause 3 of the 4 par 3’s on my home track are 155 according to the score card, go up and down based on my 7 iron distance.

See I have the opposite problem where like 1/10 times I absolutely pure the ball and blast an 8 iron like 150 yards when that's like my 130 club

I'd be air-mailing greens all day. I hit my 8 iron 165 to 170 depending on the lie, wind, temp, etc. If I hit 6 and connect properly it will be g-o-n-e. I'd say know your distances and he is correct, don't try to muscle it, just play within yourself.

Great advice except I’m consistent on hitting my distances it’s the side spin, pushes and pulls that’s throw it off. I’ll hit my P wedge 150 yards every time…. But is it 30 yards left/right or right at the pin where Ill still 3 putt it that’s what makes you a pro 🤣
@gdo3510
@gdo3510 7 месяцев назад
Club and, shorten your swing and you’ll your side spin go away. So his advice is probably good for you.
@Alexonthetube
@Alexonthetube 3 месяца назад
@@gdo3510unironically that’s what I’ve been doing. Without reading this 😅 so that was spot on advice. I haven’t really had to adjust distances too much this didn’t take off more then 3-6 yards but shortening my swing has cut the spin down dramatically and stop those hard slides and fades and even the sky ball on my irons.

Whatever Jonny, i was a brickie for 15 years, my forearms are strong as heck from spreading mortar and squishing bricks into it, i hit my 9 iron easy 150 everyweekend bud, i shoot 10 over at 5300 yard courses or 7000 yard courses regularly, just cant putt so i suck
