Coach Scheyer is good, so patient, so thoughtful with the press - answers questions thoughtfully, listens - so many old school coachs feel or felt resentful and condescending and hostile toward the press - coach Scheyer has a very very different approach and it works exceptionally well - thank you Coach- GREAT representative of Duke University at the helm

Jon was a couple years below me at Duke. It’s surreal to see him as head coach now and I’m very impressed / proud. I never met him or anything, just followed his career.

Scheyer was out-coached this game. Fortunately for Duke Wake guards were ice cold from the perimeter and Efton Reid was on the bench the entire night. Don’t expect this to be in our favor in Lawrence Joel Coliseum where the officiating is notoriously bad and in favor of Wake. What you saw from Wake is what I have been wanting from this Duke team all year….. SMOTHERING guard defense. Yet we are almost in March and yet we are still outside the top 20 teams in Defense. Right now we are ranked 24th Kenpom which is better than we have been most of the year (thank Wake’s cold shooting again, along with an easy ACC schedule), but this means there are still 23 teams who run a more formidable defense than we do!!!! My guess is we drop out of the top 30 after our next 3 road games. Either way, this defense isn’t good enough. And the offense needs to be more predicated on the guards with perimeter shooting. Yet we hardly ever set ball screens. Kyle and Mark should be beating up the opposing guards with screen after screen. Not this BS ghost screen/slip nonsense. This offense would be so much better rather than hoping Kyle can score in the paint possession after possession, which was one of his biggest weaknesses last season (at the 4 spot mind you where he held a significant size advantage). Think about this…. Duke is supposed to be playing a spread offense. Yet what we see too often is Kyle 1on1 in the block where he averaged about .54 PPP last year and our guards smothered on the perimeter, Mark sagged off. Think about what that means. If Kyle scores an average of .54 Points per possession posting defenders up, that means he scores on 1 post up in 4 offensive possessions. If each team spends about 22-23 seconds per possession, then 3 minutes have gone by and all we have to show for it is 2 points maybe 3 if Kyle gets an and one. It’s not efficient and John isn’t getting the outside looks he’s hoping for because teams don’t send the double team. With the above stats why would you???? This is why this team needs to set more ball screens for our guards to get easier perimeter shots, Roach on curls where he’s automatic from mid range, and it opens up for Kyle and Mark to get downhill to the rim on cuts. Put all these pieces together and we have a Final 4 level team. Keep coaching the way you are Jon and you will lose 2-4 games before the NCAA tournament begins.
