dude thinks the story is about Jon so he will write a terrible story. The problem with season 8 isn't Jon, they wrote Jon well. The problem with Season 7 and 8 is Cersei. She should have died in season 6 finale and Margery should have been Queen of Kingslanding. They wouldn't have to make all the stupid decisions of Season 7 aka operation prep up Cersei who isn't even heir of house Lannister. They had to bring in Maisei, not Arya, so that we will care about the people of Kingslanding. That wouldn't have been Necessary if Margery was queen. By the way Gendry was a wasted Character.
@@goddyfame3424 Jon is written like a bloody simpleton in Season 8, how can you honestly say he's written well? Man is a caricature of his former self.
@@theblackwheelbarrow1562 His story has always been get with a girl, use her to get what you want and then kill her. So he is still on track to fullfil his character arc. They messed up his story when the writers made him King. To make Jon King they pretended Sansa wasn't in that room, Little Finger who won the war relegated his authority to Jon who had no power at that moment. At the table they still put Little Finger at the side when he should have been in command and put Sansa in charge under his own authority. That is if the story stays true to the whole concept of Game of Thrones. What they wrote is equivalent of the US conquers Iraq and then the President of the US takes orders from an Iraqi poppet with no power. The whole problem people see in season 8 have been consequence of previous errors. The Jon Snow I read about would choose Lord Commander of the Night's watch over King in the North. He should have marched on the Boltons as Lord Commander with volunteers of the Night[s watch. The argument will be securing Winterfell as part of the battle against the Night's Kingshould they breach the wall. I lost all respect for Jon's character when he abandoned his watch and book Arya who Governs the North from abroad might have had to choose between her honor as a Stark and her love for Jon who abandoned his watch.
"Once that thread is laid to rest, it might be time for Jon to lay down his sword as well. The closest thing to a happily ever after for Jon, might be the chance to go in peace, and do what matters to him." This guy had it.
How? Even if the season sucked this video still is relevant to the ending we got, just like he said that jon will never claim the throne for himself to go in peace and do what matters to him (him going beyond the wall)
In the end: *Jon* became a Ghost in the north. *Arya* follows the steps of Nymeria, the warrior-queen. *Sansa,* being too trustful and naive, ends up dying to the "Lady" she was and becomes a strong woman. *Rob* calls his wolf Grey Wind because how fast the animal is, that it looks like a blur, and sadly, even though at his young age he was a genius and "living fast", just like that he went away, like in a blur. And *Bran* survives to see the end of the winter and rules as a king, he, in some way, helps to bring the Summer and retain it. And *Rickon* and Shaggydog? I have no fucking Idea because I'm reading too much into this.
Found this after watching the finale. You sir deserve all the applause i can give. You have so eloquently explained why people love Jon snow and why he does what he dies even if it seems wrong to many people at many times. We would have loved to see him able to stop Danny's fall to the dark side but your videos show perfectly why that would have been idealistic fan service and not true to what the world set up and the characters personalities were about. U have done what the writers failed to do for me, which is to understand and accept the ending of the show as the one that made sense.
He has simply re-explained what the writers already illustrated. All we have to do is like him- rewatch and think. It’s all intentionally written for us to unravel it.
Jeez this is damned fine work. Just fantastic & a pleasure to watch. Should be mandatory for ASOIAF/GOT fans, tbh. Why don't you have a million subs? Sharing this everywhere.
Jon of the House Targaryen, the one who returned from the dead, the First of His Name, King of the Andals and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms, and Protector of the Realm.
"And the closest thing to a happily ever after to Jon might be the chance to go in peace, and do what matters to him." Your last line is on point! Here after the finale. Your channel should have more subscribers.
I still wish that Jon would have *chosen* to take the black and went up north willingly instead of by the order of the king. With the current ending it almost seems that Tyrion manipulated him to kill Dany but did nothing to help him afterwards. All those conversations about him being the rightful heir smh
@@originalsun5206 He didn't want to kill Dany because he loves her, until he realized that his duty (for the realm) should be greater than his love. He is happy in the North, so maybe that's why Bran chose that decision (just to placate Greyworm and the Unsullied). In reality, Bran set him free where he is truly happy.
All of this great build up...and then nothing. At the season finale, Jon didn't have any real resolution about his parentage. All it did was drive a wedge between him and Dany (and get Varys killed). The story wouldn't have been any different if he never learned his real name.
everyone: guys don't worry he'll get a good ending! D&D: but what if Bran cucks John and he get sent north of the wall to gaurd nothing with a bunch of smelly wildlings?
The big difference between Aragorn/King Arthur and Jon Snow is that Jon is pretty dumb. Zero communication about the dead beyond the wall caused him to be killed by the nights watch. His stupidity in Battle of the Bastards was as far from a King as you can see. Went beyond the wall to catch a wight with only ten men and only his enormous plot armor saved him, again. To dumb to be a good King
Small interjection here. Yara was kind of a cruel dick to Theon . Constantly mocking and belittling him blaming him for getting her man killed when she allowed a shirtless armorless Ramsey to sic the dogs on her. Ignoring the fact that she chose to not resupply and reinforce her brother at Winterfel...
The shield that guards the realms of men , so of course he would have to choose Duty over his Dragon Queen in order to save the world from fire , Re-Unites with Ghost again and moves on as King Beyond the Wall in the North where he belongs ..The Real North
I see a lot of comments here talking about how wrong this video was in light of the finale being aired, but... was it really? Jon did struggle between his internally chosen identity (his love for Dany) and his externally forced one (being pressured to betray Dany by Sansa, Arya, and even Tyrion). But he also struggled with the very definitions of both. In spite of his love for Dany, he felt what she did was wrong. In spite of feeling she was wrong, he still loved her and wanted to be by her side. In the end, he found he couldn’t really agree with either side of himself and it wasn’t until he was reunited with Ghost beyond the wall, leaving both Winterfell and Dany behind, again in the role he had originally chosen for himself in spite of protests, that he seemed to truly gain closure. He really was always a Snow and it turned out that it *was* enough for him.
Wow I am subscribed to a lot of game of thrones channels but honestly none of them break things down like a writer would which is probably the best point of view and I never considered these things keep it up hopefully your channel will grow and continue for the spinoff cause I enjoy your videos
I found this video wonderful to watch after Season 8. So many of the things you said about Jon and the forces that drove his story were accurate. Jon would have been going against everything he believed in if he’d carried on allowing Dany to torch Westeros into submission. It was hard because he loved her. Killing her for the sake of (initially) his family might well have haunted him the rest of his life but I think equally had he stood by while Dany and her armies conquered in fire and blood, he would probably have been a lot more tormented. I think in many ways the True North with the Free Folk were the best place for him, where he could be most true to himself . There was an absence of politics, Houses, categories of birth with the Free Folk. I suspect I’m in the minority but I don’t think I would’ve wished for a different ending for him. Whatever the direction the plot had taken I never wanted to see him on the Iron Throne because what that involves just isn’t him.
Externally Assigned Purpose = Jon being sent back to the Wall Internally assigned purpose = Jon leaving the Wall with the Wildlings Now he is truly Free
If GRRM wrote it...it would be Daenerys killing Jon Snow, & finding out after he's dead that she is pregnant with his child. This son lives & he is "The Prince that is Promised". BITTERSWEET!😉
You know, the ending is such a damn shame considering Jon Snow/Aegon Targaryen by blood is a mix of ice and fire. Makes me wonder how the books will end
15:50 "... go in peace and do what matters to him." While you missed a step in his relationship to Daenerys, you most certainly weren't wrong on Jon, in a sense, taking freedom beyond the Wall.
Aragorn in the books was a good person, and was chosen by people as well as birth right to lead his people. It was even said "the hands of a king are the hands of a healer". But Jon is not the kind of hero who should rule. I think Jon is the hero who leads others to their "happy ending" regardless of whether or not he gets his
Honestly, excluding season 8, I like Jon’s depiction in the show better. If you follow his story line seasons 1-7 it’s a well realized narrative that all contributes to his character greatly. Even season 7, a drop in quality up to that point for the show, manages to add on and help develop Jon as a character. Also it’s just hard for me to believe a 15 year old can do all Jon does and he’s willing to leave the watch just because someone calls him a bastard despite staying after all his other family members death?
Frankie TheHeathen actually according to the show Arya is the Princess That Was Promised. As for the books, jury is still out whether it's Jon or Dany.
Despite the baby error, this was fabulous. You're gaining weight as my favourite RU-vidr for GoT (seriously addicted to watching videos now it's all over whilst waiting for the next book release)
Aside from #MagicBaby - which honestly always seemed way too fairy tale and happy to me - you were spot on as to his character, and even the bad dialogue of season 8 couldn’t mask it: Jon is who he chooses to be through his choice of friends and family, as we all are. His story is ultimately one of rejecting fate, prophecy and outside influence, and being true to the sense of morality he is taught by those he respects and trusts. I’ve been binge watching your videos (and sharing them with friends who are probably sick of me writing so many GoT character analyses by now), and seriously this is one of my favorites, though The Fall Of Daenerys Targaryen is really A++.
Is it just me, or would Jon have been cooler as an albino and/or white haired like his wolf? Would make sense due to Targaryen blood, and when people ask about it Ned could just say hes albino, whether or not he actually is.
Loved this. Ed enjoy a postscript, following the finale. Maybe he was Jon Snow after all - his own man. At peace with his ending with the free folk; would have liked to see Jon choose it himself. Although, ultimately he does, by leaving Castle Black, and setting off into the coming spring, with Ghost & the free folk.
Love this as I have been debating this with friends now since season 7 though I have to disagree with one thing - Dany Sorry - I write a Lot!!! We are now at the last episode and I am just seeing your videos. I love a controversial take as it allows you to see from different perspectives. Though I kind of picked up on this theory of mine in the books, I realized that Jon’s overall purpose has to do with having his own family. This was hinted in episode 1 & book 1 & I was sold on it when Arya killed the Night King. It’s unlikely that Jon will kill Dany as well - he will most likely take her power by killing Drogon. Arya may kill Dany as a mercy. men are sheep... people look but don’t see due to idealistic perception.... There is a love story here but I’ve never thought it ended with Jon and Dany. I loved seeing these 2 get to together but understood this may start to unravel in some way once they get to Winterfell. The fact that Jon is a hero & Kingly is just who he is. His purpose is where his journey is complete and he gets a family. This is most likely a reveal and some may not like it (if I am correct... though it’s kind of obvious... but I’ve Have been drinking too much wine lately ). He loves his family but is tethered to one character now....and her journey reflects Dany’s as well but the driver of this characters arch and redemption has always been about love and family and protection..... another mirror of the character is now Ygritte - feisty in expressing her opinions and now fighting for freedoms and independence. What did Cat say... love is built stole by stone. Cersei - love makes you act a fool as you will do anything to protect the ones you love. Just sharing my primary crack pot theory but this theory is how I have managed to guess some of the twists this season. The reveal of Jon’s heritage has the most important impact to his family which is why Bran said, the choice is yours.
Such a travesty what they did with this character by the end of the series. Probably one of my favorite protagonists of all time. Then season 8 happened and we got Deus-Ex Arya instead.
I disagree. Whether aragorn should rule was kind of the major focus of his arc. Isilidur was the rightful ruler and look how badly he fucked up. From before the lord of the rings to its end the story of aragorn is about becoming a man worthy to rule. He explores other cultures and takes on rules of leadership to better understand the world etc. I'm really not a fan of people oversimplifying the lord of the rings like it's just oh this guy good this guy bad! How cliche
The princes that was promised is the baby.... wow i love this idea. There is couple thing that relate Jon to the faith of babies in the show. First, he know there is baby white walkers and that he his concerned about them. We know that when he replied to Tormund who want to kill the Night King "you don't understand" Second, there is always a possibility that one day he learn that Cersei was pregnant when he attack king Landing. This is mirror of his childhood. And third, he believe that Daenarys could have had a children of himself, she may have been pregnant when he killed her. The fact that he his away in North will surely give him nightmare about all of this thinking all the time he was cursed as a baby and his destiny is put blood of babies on his hands despite him.
John prevailed, because he inspired the support of others. His story always involved sacrifice, but in the end, within hi arc, he won everything he could and truly wanted.
11:48 I strongly disagree that you claim there’s existentialism in this show to say nothing matters. Just because life isn’t candies and rainbows 100% of the time, that doesn’t give off the sense nothing matters. Only suicidal people take hardship and extrapolate to the nth degree to conclude nothing matters. To everyone else who is sane, hardship, suffering and inevitable death is what gives life meaning to begin with. You know what’s meaningless? A story with no conflict and suffering of some sort. Because we know life is full of various degrees of stress. So to create a piece of writing that doesn’t reflect reality is akin to something completely alien to us. You’re kind of suggesting that existentialism is present in game of thrones. And how modern existentialism contrasts with older works focused on divinity. I don’t agree. Not all works are exclusive to only divinity or modern existentialism. That’s a false dichotomy. Marcel Proust’s books the stranger is based on existentialism for example.
I totally agree with your last sentence! And that's why I get the actual GOT ending, even though it's not necessarily satisfying to viewers. I'm not necessarily satisfied either, but I get it. I've thought about his plight since the final episode and asked myself, "What has John ever wanted?" My answer has was,"To be what he wants to be and not what others want for him," which was never any throne. I actually imagine him happy in the north with the Free Folk, possibly even finding ways to make life better for them because he's a natural born leader and people gravitate towards him.
@@patriciaRAWR But Jon didn't stay at the wall. He still chose what he'd do with the sentence he was given. The North has always been a place he's comfortable in. I think being made to be King of the 6 kingdoms would be more of a true sentence for him. Though most would prefer he be king over Bran, that's not what he wanted. At least in going North, he has more freedom to live his own life as he chooses.
I also think Jon's name (Snow) and his direwolf's color (white) symbolize his purity and goodness. He always has to do what's right and honorable, and damn the consequences.
