Jon Stewart would be a great Senator but I like him too much to inflict that on him. The right would run his body of work through the dehumorizer and he would be hung out to dry by both Republicans and Democrats. Look what they did to Al Franken. Chuck Schumer was always an opponent of Franken and Franken was too smart and made too much sense for those entrenched in the 'system' to tolerate.

@David Renton No, some people say Jon Stewart is responsible for Trump's presidency. Supposedly Jon went after the republicans so hard in his show, the republican party and -voters wanted revenge and therefore voted for an extreme guy like Trump. Even if that were true (which it's not) , people shouldn't blame Jon Stewart, instead they should blame republican voters for voting out of vindictiveness rather than personal persuasion. In my humble opinion, if there's anything to blame for Trump's presidency, it's the DNC for putting up Hillary Clinton as their candidate. That was a huge foreseeable mistake.

Whenever I hear about American politics, I'm so incredibly grateful that I'm Dutch. Politics here in the Netherlands are so beautifully boring. Most Dutch people pride themselves on using the "polder model", which is just lots of people representing different sides sitting in a room together and having tons of really long really boring discussions until some sort of compromise which most parties feel okayish about comes out. It's absolutely glorious. We have a functional multi-partysystem (our current government consists of four different parties). Politicians almost never talk about the personal lives of other politicians. The elections are covered well, but not obsessively. It's terrific

I love Crooked Media, but I think we all need to take what he said to heart at the end. "We are building the wrong thing." If we just have a left counterweight to Fox, we arent getting where we want to go. We have to have a media that will go after corruption no matter where it lives. And if / when you go after corruption on the left, you build that credibility that you arent just a mouthpiece for left leaning things without scrutiny, i.e. what Fox does for the right. Now, I am not doing a 'both sides' thing. I firmly believe that the right is almost thoroughly corrupt. But I am sure there are pockets of corruption on the left. Cleaning our own house is as important as fighting the opposition.

This is so true. I go where my values take me. If any dems corrupt those values, call them out. What Trump has exposed about Republicans to me is how their real values are so in conflict with my own. They embrace values which they do not practice. They are singularly focused on money and power. Stewart saw it in Washington. Both parties. The insulation. The isolation. Dems are evolving out of it. R's are digging deeper into it. And America disintegrates by the day.

During the Clinton presidency Lani Guinier who was nominated for assistant attorney general for civil rights was labeled as some kind of radical because she had expressed views about alternate voting methods. It’s a hard sell because most people don’t understand much about the mathematics of social choice. Try to get anyone to understand Arrow’s Theorem, geez.

I'm an Australian and we have that. But we still have a right wing govt. You know what we've got that you do? Rupert "with fox is my legacy, I own your country's leaders" Murdoch. Sure our system is better than yours by heaps, but it's more corrupt now than ever. That agro-right-pundit-media and pay-to-play-corruption are the original problem.

Jon Stewart has been, and continues to be, one of the most important commentators/comedians of our time. He does so much more than just political sattire - he provides thought experiments, analysis, and essentially a basic clarity in this era of MDM (mis-,dis-,mal-information,) that saturates our news content today.

Am from Sweden but have followed American politics most of my life. And if you are interested in a Europeans perspective: I see 4 things that make American politics it fundamentally unique: 1. No real regulation on "Money in politics": Now I know there are rules. But mostly for show it seems. The theory: "money is speech" is so American I can't even fathom it. That together with lose lobbying regulations have totally undercut your whole democracy. The people that write your laws are in constant elections which makes them fundraise every year, every month, every week. The job of keeping the job takes all their time and effort. And the people or companies/industries that make that possible are the priority. Now.. of course, there is lobbying and donations here too.. it's just strikingly regulated and transparency is demanded. (OBS! But then again.. your whole spectrum of "left and right" is skew. In Europe, Democrats would not be considered anyway near a party on the left. progressive democrats - yes but moderates - hell no. And the idea of criticizing capitalism and being for a welfare system is a staple both the right and left in most countries. Just making that point to make sure you understand how extreme the idea of free-roaming capitalistic forces in politics seem to most of the world) 2. Politicizing the law: The fact that you elect DAs, Judges, and supreme court. Again - a totally different system than what I've seen anywhere else where the main point is to absolutely make sure that the law is separated from politics. Yes - politicians write the laws but judges and prosecutors are hired based on merit - just like any important job. No influence - political or other has any influence on your treatment regarding the law. If you look at America - if we have established that your politics is for sale you can only come to the conclusion that the law doesn't apply equally for all citizens. Again Money corrupts the one system that is supposed to be fair. Always. 3. 24h political news media. Nothing like anywhere in the world. Because you've made your politics a game, with constant elections and two teams, like a sport. it becomes entertainment and conflict. Two things fundamental for every great storyteller. And now capitalistic forces can make money on it. Every day, All the time. And as a tv producer, I can tell you. The only mission in tv is to sell ads. The higher your ratings the more money you get for your ads. And what gets you ratings. The same thing that gets any reality tv ratings - Conflict. Journalism? Truth? News? Has nothing to do with it. 4. Electoral college. America is and is getting more and more progressive. In any other country, this is your last 4 presidents CLINTON, GORE, OBAMA, CLINTON. That should tell you everything you need to know. And why haven't you changed it? Look above.. Who's got the power and why.. And so it goes.. in a circle.. over and over again.

LOL..... Walter Cronkite was a NEWSMAN with credibility. Jon Stewart is a COMEDIAN who twists the information to get a laugh. Sad state of society, when people use comedians for their source of news.

@@TheDennisgrass Jon Stewart is much more than a comedian. He's not Walter Cronkite, but then Cronkite did not have a sense of humor. He is very insightful about our government, but does not "twist information" to get his laughs. The real "sad state of society" is when people rely on a far-right propaganda network (Fox News), and idiots like Carlson, Hannity, Ingraham, and others like Rush Limbaugh on AM radio for their source of news.

10:08 Yep. The 'alternative' (fill in the blank) 14:00 He is right. But I feel compelled here to confess, I'm totally hooked on the Trump show. From Independent Progressive Media, to the Mainstream media, print media, NYT, WAPO, RAW, Alternet, Daily Kaos, if they pump it out, I consume it. I react to it. Phew...confessing does feel good.😉 I'm not even American, but I can't look away. I get so angry. It's automatic. 23:30 YES!!!! Jon Stewart, you are missed. I have always appreciated Jon's perspective and his clear-headed breakdowns of situations. I do feel that, as time goes on, Jon underestimates the amount of intentional bad actors contributing to these problems. It is understandable - he wants reason, he wants to sincerely reach across the aisle, and he knows that so many problems are not partisan. That they affect everyone, not one side or the other, and people need to understand that. Plus, intentionally bad actors can create a sort of hopelessness - you can't reason with someone whose motivation is "I shall create problems on purpose". If business, the media, and government is full of those people - what can you do? Peaceful, reasonable, and systemic solutions become ineffective. I think Jon also greatly underestimates the power over psychology and culture that the media has - even as much as he recognizes the danger of Fox News and the far-right media machine. Jon dismisses things like clickbait and vacuous talking heads as annoying distractions that aren't really the root of problems. But he doesn't realize that these things contribute to a shallow, vapid, anti-intellectual culture. The media trains the public, over the course of a lifetime, to simply stop thinking and to only react to the latest stimuli. The sheer ignorance and, frankly, stupidity, of much of the American electorate is in large part a consequence of the fundamental nature of profit-driven media for the last 60 years.

I love Jon Stuart! At least now that he's pushing a movie, we'll see him on the talk shows for a while. He is completely amazing! Especially when he's dismantling the media. And do you realize that almost all of the late-night talk show hosts were originally on the Daily Show? Samantha Bee, John Oliver, Stephen Colbert, and more. I think many of the rest came from SNL, but none of them are Jon himself. I also like Trevor Noah, who I think only got the name, but he's also a very smart guy with some biting satire.

Jon Stewart is a great instigator of thought, in looking at a matter with the inspiration of new information that might have been overlooked or deemed unimportant. As a person who has lived in other countries, I find the The United States of America, is the leader of constant free thought and opinion. We also have the advantage of free media. Things are pretty dire , people are dealing with death, financial hardship , and many other things that might behove us. We could be happy by what we do have and that is freedom of expression, and speech.
