"Glen isn't shilling for the GOP. He is shilling for the new movement" Someone like Stewart, a decade+ ago, making the bold, succinct conclusions that conservatism bowing to radicalism is the future of the entire party, and Reilly not even realizing that he's already lost his audience to the newer faces of the party, for 40 minutes straight, is just wild to watch now.
It has more to say in how the Republican party refused to adapt and stay relevant over time. There was a major shift around the civil rights era in party identity with LBJ. Something around the same level is bound to happen over the course of time with a skilled politician shaping the next paradigm shift.
It's way worse than that. They not only claim they're not news, their legal defence is that nobody with a brain could reasonably conclude what they say is true.
None of the “news” stations are news. Fox, CNN and MSNBC have all used the “entertainment” excuse in court. Americans are screwed until we get real journalists back in the mainstream.
None of them claim to be an informative "journalistic" organization. They are now, "political opinion entertainment" CNN anchor said that. 5 oldWhitemen coOwn msnbc, cnn, fox, (drumroll)BET also.
Ailes and Limbaugh both dead and discredited, and O'Reilly banished...Stewart also perfectly identifies Beck as the father of Tea Party and QAnon cults.
"are you still referring to it that way, as a news organization?" John Stewart is a smart man, not everyday citizens squeeze money out of congress. For 9/11 responders.
What more telling are the comments O'Reilly says to John, “You worship Obama”, also “(how far you are left wing) depends on the ratings and how happy the audience are right?” The truth about Fox News slipping out in his “quips” to Jon is so great, especially after Trump became president and after he lost the 2020 election.
I've never seen such hostility from two people handled so respectfully before. From one statement to the next you couldn't tell if they were friends or planning to kill each other. This is gold.
Of all things, the Greenwich Village remark clearly took Stewart to the edge. 32:28 The village being a dog-whistle for Jews and gay people. Interesting watching him gather himself and suddenly go personal with O’Reily and the way that he lives. That moment was a great example of a civil attack between two people who despise one another.
They've always respected each other. This is what political discourse should be, but now it's just politicians throwing feces at each other in a weird Spider-Man meme quasi-reality where headlines and clicks are more important than doing their jobs.
@@denimchicken420 no, now it's politicians talking gibberish like a toddler and having 70 million lap it up like the gospel and talkshow hosts babbling on and on, looking like confused puppies and pretending they are truth tellers.
They like each other is why. Watch all of their appearances (on both shows). It’s quite clear their opinions differ but they respect and enjoy each other.
it's like this - i hate peanut butter. (wish i didn't.) my friend doesn't. she had a chocolate peanut butter milkshake. she's like, "you can hardly taste the peanut butter, try it!" i did. i tasted the peanut butter. if the taste of peanut butter doesn't bother you, you're not going to notice it as standing out amongst the other flavors. that was o'reilly with right wing ideas. he didn't have a problem with the conservatism, so he didn't notice the dog whistles.
It's incredible the standard Fox held to Jon. They treated him like an equal voice and debated him as a newsman instead of a comedian. They were terrified of him.
@@octaviancaesarhibernicus4447 I know this is 3 years old but yeah hahaha You don't need hindsight to know Stewart was smart, but it helps. Just as an example, I'm at around 5-6 minutes in this video and he just described how the Dems had a supermajority (2010), how Obama could've played his cards, and how he ended up playing his cards (as Stewart mentioned earlier when he said Obama was playing too nice and he should've f*d congress as much as legally possible) Nowadays that is more common sense than looking both ways before crossing the road. We know that obamacare was an idea that I believe was first idealized in the early 90's by the heritage foundation, the individual mandate and whatnot. That was a right-wing thinktank organization and Obama through that and other examples like Dodd Frank legislation and everywhere else he tried to "triangulate" and be the New Democrat model Bill Clinton made popular in the 90's, "above the fray" and bringing the country together. Yes, back then it was still seen as the way mainstream dems had to be, and until nowadays we have braindead dems trying to repeat the same mistakes that have been making them lose a lot in recent years. We all knew Stewart was smart, but time only shows *how* smart he actually was! 😁
I dont think you need hindsight to see how smart Jon is and was here, but I would hope that that hindsight would open some conservative eyes and make them question their beliefs.
As an Iraqi that was forced to leave Iraq at the age of 6 because of war, that statement broke my heart. The audacity that a white man in a suit on TV can openly say that knowing that no one ever has to take responsibility for it all the while smirking whilst saying it..... absolutely heart breaking.
I’m Iraqi too but it’s not that simple. War is horrible, but Saddam’s terror state killed an estimated two million people during his reign of terror. The war could have been executed more competently, but Saddam had to go. I don’t care what the Bush administrations motives were, I’m talking about the Iraqi people here.
@@atuema1602 Salam my bro. While I totally agree with you, Saddam had to go, the manner in which it was conducted was terrible. And that's being nice about it. US deliberately suspended the military and police which caused the chaos. There were senators advising the Bush administration against this move but Cheney and Rumsfield and the other criminals didn't want to listen. What breaks my heart until today is that the fact there's no accountability or anyone going to prison, this is going to be repeated time and time again.
And yet what have we learned? If the Republican Party decides to do it again with a different country nothing will be different. There will be lies, talking heads repeating the lies and too many lives will be lost on both sides.
no, you can't expect him to have all that money and not enjoy it now that he has worked all these years. I know how you feel. I used to enjoy his presence
15:04 "That's like saying someone watches your show and doesn't know its a comedy show." Jon's show was on "COMEDY central." Bill's show was on "Fox NEWS" So yeah I do see the difference there.
Love how O'reilly complements Stewart for being "pretty intellectual" when in fact Jon has been running rings around him the whole time. O'reilly always thinks he has the upper hand in a debate, but look who's laughing: his own camera guys
Jon is always respectful, he shows how witty and quick minded he is and does not need to be rude. While Bill starts of being rude and derogatory, " did your writers think that up"...later "pin head writers." But as Jon wins over the tech ppl in the room Bill realises he is loosing the audience. The "debate in the air-conditioned auditorium" is very similar. Why does Bill always call Jon "Stewart" never Jon? Odd in today's world.
@@boomerfunnyjimgaffigan4998 i think its Bill trying to get shots back at Jon for all the times he was a target on daily show. Hes trying so hard to upset and pin Jon, but Jon is just tooo fuckin good at the game Bill cant land a single shot
@@scotta4564I think it’s being misinterpreted a little. Bill seems like an ass in general, but I think all their interactions seemed more like 2 people bantering like friends would rather than out of spite. Given the amount of times they each appeared on the others show I don’t think bill is trying to be rude here, just play up the character Jon makes of him on his show and dish back some.
41:15 The cutest thing is that Jon always draws the line at Colbert. He can take any shit from O'Reilly and make a joke out of it, but once he mentions Stephen he suddenly gets all serious and defends him.
I totally agree. I think O'Reilly just can't get over when Colbert was interviewed in character, and it pissed him off, not only because O'Reilly's one joke about how Colbert pronounces his name didn't go over well, and then Colbert continued to satirize him to his face. When not in character, you can tell Stewart was right. O'Reilly did an interview on the Late Show right after the Pulse shooting, and it was just respectful.
For all the ways O'Reilly is a loathsome human being, I have to give him props for allowing Stewart to articulate his perspectives without bulling him over like he did with all his other guests. I mean, given the way his show normally unfolded, it ends up being a compliment that he could permit a guest with an opposing viewpoint to speak in full sentences.
He’s a monster. I don’t believe his interaction with Stewart came from an honest place of exchange of ideas but his ego thinking he could out argue anyone and a ratings ploy. He’s struggled every time I see him outside his own program and was able to cut off anyone speaking at his own pleasure.
It's because he knew Jon wouldn't tolerate it and would have walked out. Jon was probably the only other media person with as much clout back then. It's basically a meeting of equals, except Jon is actually honest with what he thinks.
@@globaladdict Hysterical! Dominion Lawsuit anyone? You know that its likely that Bill agreed with a lot of what Jon thought but you know it's not red or blue, its green. Its not like their business model ever changed over there. But you couldn't do that to Jon because he's quicker, nicer, and absolutely does not give a shit what O'Reilly says, because hes funnier by a mile.
I have no idea how I got here from youtube autoplay but I'm so glad I found this old interview. I remember when it first happened and was uploaded in multiple parts.
Listening to all of O'Reilly's producers laugh at Jon's jokes is amazing! Just a reminder that only one of these men has been completely disgraced and cast from society. Only one of these med was fired from his job due to his actions whereas the other left on his own terms because of how much the insanity was dragging him down.
What stands out about this to me is how seeing him next to Jon highlights the fact that O'Reilly actually did have charisma of his own. It's hard to see when he's screaming gibberish into his "no-spin zone", but here and in the Rumble in the Air-Conditioned Auditorium really shows that he can be funny and interesting, in an albeit condescending and paternalist kind of way. In a way that makes the pairing of the two more dangerous, because it made O'Reilly seem more reasonable than he was. He was a monster under the skin, harassing his female staff and spouting propaganda for Roger Ailes, but you'd never know it here because he seems so personable - even through the insults. What we don't' realize is that Jon is just taking the insults in stride because he doesn't care, he doesn't take O'Reilly's persona seriously, so why should he? It seems funny when the man being insulted can just brush it aside as meaningless comedy, but it shows hints of O'Reilly's true colors.
They seem very polite but they’re both being so passive aggressive 😂 also what really pissed me off was bill trying to make it seem like he’s a regular guy when he most definitely lives in a mansion. He acts like he’s not also an college educated elitists.
I've always loved their relationship. It's based on respect and even though they disagree they can find ways to have open and honest discussion. We need more of this in today's day and age.
I really love it when O'Reilly calls Stewart an elitist for knowing of a well known actor (or at least recognizable, all you'd have to do is the voice and most people would know who you mean) and then promptly brags about having somebody else mow his lawn.
This must be the best discourse with chemistry back and forth ever. Bill knows he can’t roll over Jon, Jon knows he has to be sharp at ever remark. Every shot Bill throws Jon lobs it back, but Bill deflects and Jon adjusts. It’s insane that ‘entertainment’ politics such as this probably does more for American politics and opposing sides watching to get a different view of their ideologies than any other regular cable news ‘we have opposing sides and we are serious’ bits we still get now
@@damionverine7159 I am Nate from Georgia and I miss the art and skill of a debate between political rivals who are willing to allow a rebuttal to be heard and then Respectfully make a counter point with examples or evidence. And so on. But O'Reilly and Stewart were great in the day. Hell, it is entertaining. I debated in high school and was taught the proper etiquette of debate and I recall my teacher repeatedly said 'intellect before emotions, but think quickly without reaction.' I'm 46 now and I don't recall everything, but debate is an intellectual art form with a long history. However, what I learned and loved in high school in 1993, as a 17 year old has been rapidly becoming obsolete by my standards over the years into the Jerry Springer show, frankly. It is embarrassing. I used to watch CSpan for practice. Because, when in session, our Congress and Senate showed up to work on bills and actually having read them and then debate the proposed legislation. This can be done quickly at times and slower on the heavier issues. But, in 93 government officials would be present. I could pay attention to other colleagues responses and expressions at points, ya know. But our elected officials in both Parties. House and Senate don't even show up. Those chambers are not even half full and most are in their phones. Being from Georgia we have a district that elected the MTG overwhelming twice now. But if she has an agenda or conspiracy to flat out lies in line with her extremist base. She is an agitator and a disruption to every proceeding with her absurdity. She is from my state and I checked her out. Researching and checking facts about her was difficult because she was a southern daughter of a Contractor. She did graduate college. She has worked for daddy. She married into another well off family and that's it. She moved to another district in the racist oasis of North West Georgia below Chattanooga. Fuck I had to vote in a Senate Runoff between the incumbent and first black Georgian Senator with mentors like John Lewis and was involved in the Civil Rights Movement for years. Became the Pastor of the same church as MLK JR. His reputation was positive statewide and especially in Atlanta activism for local issues. Overly qualified and experienced in a Runoff against Herschel Walker. Herschel was a Trump loyalist for the simple reason that Trump payed him a record breaking contract to play football for the USFL team owned by Trump. Herschel was expected to be Trump's Star running back one more time. Trump went to Texas got him away from his chicken farm and he began the campaign for Senator. It was a suspect choice for most Georgia Republicans because Herschel Walker was registered voter in Texas for decades
