It's Jonas' 2nd 3 stage win event in 2023, he swept all 3 at O Gran Camiño, and if you count the TTT at Paris-Nice, then Jonas has won 7 stages & 2 of 3 events he's raced in 2023.
Amazing performance by jonas. Especially after he got dropped in Paris nice so easily. Still, hard to believe all this is real. Every other week it feels like we have someone pushing 7 w/kg for 10+ minutes. I fear we will be getting some uncomfortable news at some point over the next year. But for now the let’s enjoy this incredible level of climbing.
Being only 4.3km long I suppose that such a high power effort was feasible for a climber like Jonas who knew that he had put that down if he was to break his rivals. That being said it’s a new record.
Random request: Andy was ‘only’ 43 seconds behind a rampaging Contador on Verbier 2009. Have you ever looked into his W/kg? And was that even his best W/kg performance? I’m guessing his greater weight than Contador could mean his W/kg is generally not so impressive. Thanks!
Tourmalet and Verbier are his best in terms of watts, his raid over Galibier obviously impressive as well. The rest of his performances: Not that great.
Noticeable was Jonas used Cervelo R5 in Basque while entirely on S5 in all stages in Paris Nice even during the queen stage. Bike can have marginal difference especially on steep climbs
Very good analysis! Have you ever looked into Eladio Jimenez performance up Xorret de Cati in the 2000 Vuelta? I believe it is a candidate for top 10 best ever.
Remember how much technology has improved the last 30-15 years that is massive. Also the way they train now and the food there’s a lot of factors. But doping will never disappear. Even some chess players are doped…
The classic is Paul Kimmage’s _A Rough Ride_ or _Rough Ride_. He chronicles the rise of EPO doping in the pro peloton and was absolutely shunned for breaking the code of silence. You can also find books concerning Lance Armstrong, including Tyler Hamilton’s _The Secret Race_. Doping is a very complex issue. In my view the riders take the brunt but the collusion between governing bodies, teams, doctors, trainers, and drug companies is a huge part of it. Especially governing bodies-national and international.
Breaking The Chain: Drugs and Cycling - The True Story. A short and cheap book and there is almost all cycling doping history until Festina. This book was written by a Festina soigneur who was stopped by the police. The Secret Race by Tyler Hamilton which is the most popular doping book. There is interesting stuff about US Postal and Hamilton's career overall
Only 7th 7 watts per kilo performance ever, with the 2nd best number, granted 11m17s is not nearly as impressive as some of those longer performances, and that Vaughters one because of the distance is insane
