I bought this J&S 540 back in 2019. After some repairs and a lot of cleaning I got it running again.

Gday Bart, all good projects take time, some longer then others, im sure you’ll have a perfect surface finish when your done, great video as always, cheers

Nice grinder. So this was back in 03 B.B. (Before Baby) LOL. I believe you need to grind the table first and then grind the base of your vice then the top to get everything flat before you do any grinding. You can check a few RU-vid channels for info on grinding like Vintage Machinery and Solid Rock Machining and if you want in depth check out Robin Renzetti (ROBRENZ). Be safe Cheers

Hi Bart, great video. I have to repaint the oil tank on mine. What type of paint did you use? Thanks

Thanks. I used 2K paint from a Dutch supplier called Polyservice. But other brands will work fine.

@bartharkemametalworks2299 @Gizanoni0701 Good afternoon! Is it possible to quote and supply the part below, that is: - 01 Hydraulic Unit for the Jones and Shipman 540 Grinder - manufactured in 1959. We need it here in Brazil. If it is not feasible, would you have someone to recommend? Eventually, the Hydraulic Unit without the engine would meet our requirements. Thanks for a prompt return. Sincerely. Giovanna Zanoni

Nice work Bart! If you need anything on the hydraulics let me know! One say that the reservoir in a ‘poor mans’ hydraulic system is the best filter, the debris will sink to the bottom. Nice example of that in your video! But this shocked me! Don’t let your hydraulic pump run dry for to long, they won’t survive.

Great video. I have just bought a very nice 540P. There is a problem with the hydraulic drive though. Spindle runs great but when I start the hydraulic motor there is a very loud noise and it cuts out. Maybe the chain hits something? Anyone know what this could be?

Hi Bart, gave my Brother J&S gearhead pillar drill press some 20 years ago, built early fifties, quality machine and still going strong. I see J&S has been taken over by Hardinge, another quality machine manufacturer, Steve Watkins has a Hardinge Lathe, good watch on RU-vid. Changing the oil filter is a priority, hate to see you damage that nice machine.

Do you know the specs for the mesh oil filter to get? Just started doing the tank cleanout on a new to me J&S 540, your video was a big help. My sump looks exactly the same and the mesh filter is destroyed. I think they're called a "hydraulic suction strainer" after much googling but I could be wrong. Not sure what mesh size to get though and the manual doesn't state it. Thanks for the video.

I bought one from like this but still have to install it. I do prefer something finer but im not sure that will effect the oil flow. Not sure about the mesh size.

Really good video Bart! It was a very short 43 minutes. Glad to see the SG working and no doubt you'll sort out the imbalances leading to the less than Bart worthy surface finish. Looking forward to the future updates

I have an unusual question. I learned machining on the job from my grandfather who had been a chief engineer on a ship. Over the decades I have bought and sold many machines and gone through the tedious exercise of leveling them. I just recently found pictures for the first time of the shipboard machine shop. I guess I had always assumed the machines were on fancy gimbals or something. Nothing could be further from the truth! Many things were simply welded to the floor, I even saw some machines welded to the curved wall so their legs can be removed! So which is it? Are these big machines from the 40s Stout enough that they do not require all of this fussy leveling? It never sounded like they were incapable of producing precision parts on board and I know for a fact they were not specialized machines. My own Mori seiki was liberated from a Japanese ship that did not have the correct papers during WW2 though Hercules labels were put on it by way of disguise. So which is it, where do you stand on leveling machines?
@bigbattenberg
@bigbattenberg 2 года назад
Good question. There are several factors at play here. First, many machines are not sturdy enough to stand on their own and have proper alignment, center lathes are a good example. Levelling is the way to get the machine straight and also lathes are often grouted in to lower the resonant frequency (i.e. increase mass). Machines like mills and grinders which stand on one solid foot still can benefit from grouting in but are indeed not critical in terms of levelling. Finally, levelling can be called for because of alignment of ancillary componenent, like a bar feeder unit. In fact I have a turret lathe, the documentation says to not bolt down or grout in but level with steel/ rubber/ plastic sheets. Then again, my surface grinder comes with factory levelling feet. My mill must be grouted in. I once spoke to an old craftsman who told me that ideally, at least the mass of the machine must be underfoot in the form of concrete which is only benecifial of course when grouted in. A ship I think is a far from ideal place but there is no choice. I am sure this environment will produce less accurate parts because of vibration.

The timing of these videos is excellent as my slightly later model turned up yesterday. What's the best resource you've found for these machines online?

Great content. The chatter marks on your workpiece are from an imbalance in the wheel.
@joaomvfalcao
@joaomvfalcao 2 года назад
Hello Hannes, i think your are right about the imbalance of the wheel, but we can’t forget that Bart have the machine in a pallet. It need to be in a leveled floor with levelling pads to have a grest results. Cheers for both, nice video!!

Whilst imbalance is a possibility, and worth trying to correct to see if it helps. Steve Barton at Solid Rock Machine Shop recently said most modern grinding wheels under a certain diameter ( can’t remember what but 8” wheels are under it) don’t require balancing, if he finds one that is out of balance he throws it away. He said that wheel hop is mainly caused by spindle issues.
@tonyray91

And I also agree that the pallet is likely to be a factor.
