Jonny Brownlee: Alistair helps brother over finish line in dramatic World Series finale
Exhausted Briton Jonny Brownlee needed to be helped over the finish line by brother Alistair in a dramatic end to the Triathlon World Series in Mexico.
Leading with 700m left, Jonny, 26, began to weave over the road in hot and humid conditions in Cozumel.
Third-placed Alistair, 28, caught his brother, propping him up for the final couple of hundred metres before pushing him over the line in second place.
They were overtaken by South African Henri Schoeman, the eventual winner.
Victory in Mexico would have given Jonny the world title, but second place left him just four points behind Mario Mola.
The Spaniard was fifth on Sunday to top the overall standings.
Jonny, Olympic silver medallist at Rio 2016 and a bronze medallist at London 2012, collapsed to the ground the moment he crossed the finish line.
He required treatment but later tweeted he was OK, with a photo of himself lying in a hospital bed on a drip.
Alongside a video clip of the finish of the race, he also wrote: "Normally when you have had too much to drink. This time it was the opposite #ouch"

I am an emergency doctor, and until now I am a medical director in a hospital in Cozumel Mexico. I was Jonathan Brownlee's doctor that Sunday. I received him at the hospital where I work. He was very dehydrated when he got to the hospital, so we started IV fluids and management for heat stroke. He recovered a few minutes later. His response to treatment was impressive. He was very nice, and it was very kind of him that he spoke some Spanish with us, even though we speak English, he took advantage of the situation to practice his Spanish.

The older brother, you can see, did not think twice about Losing his gold medal chance to help his little brother. I think he was more concerned about his brother getting to finish the race and not having to have the sadness of not getting to finish the race, then whether they won anything or not. I wondered if they would be disqualified. The Spanish Federation appealed to have them DQ'd, but it was dismissed because there was no outside help and that triathletes help each other all the time by helping zip up suits, sharing drinks, etc. It was ruled that this was no different. If a spectator were to help him, that would be grounds for disqualification.

One of the most worrying yet azxing things I have ever seen in my life. I just think if it was my brother I would do the exact same thing so I honestly can't respect Alistair more than I already did. Amazing to watch

Helping him finish is one, but to push him to finish before him to help him achieve his overall title- only a brother's love can do that.

The guy who won should have turned around and thanked the brothers for the win instead of reacting like it was his for the taking all along.

I completely agree - he should have shown his appreciation at the very least, but due to his lack of gratitude it is a hollow victory for him....
