A review & some other trivia. Guess I listened to a video recently that seems to jumble the models some. So this is an attempt to clarify the models Jonsered sold based on the 372 chassis BOTH Original Edition AND X-Torq. Added a little trivia... hope you enjoy

I could watch a new version of this video every 6 months. I have always had a soft spot for the 48mm saws, they run so good.

just rebuilt my 2163 and added a 52mm bigbore kit so basically i have a 2176.5 cc build! so far i love it but have only ran 2 tanks of fuel through it! it definately outcuts my 572! going easy on the breakin!! love your vids! so educational along with tinman and harvey over at ironhorse!

A guy who done some porting for me on a 372xp told me that you were the most knowledgeable guy on youtube on saws and I tend to agree!

Eventhough you have hit on this discussion in different ways in other videos, in my opinion it is still invaluable info for someone like myself, most of the stuff that shows up to my BarnShop door is homeowner stuff and that is because it is the stuff that the Dealer or a (Legit) Saw Shop in my area dosen't want to mess with for a number of reasons (you know) and also my geographic location ( I'm in the middle of homeowner ville) so I don't get many chances to experience and or touch the variety of equipment as other repair shops. I was unaware that Jonesred had become RedMax, I was under the impression that Jonesred had just slid off into the abyss, thanks for that bit of info. Thanks for the upload 👍👍

I went through 26 years of hand cutting and never paid much attention to saws. I just bought whatever was best at the time and cut with it and I didn't want to think about my saw after work. I used many of these saws you are showing and wore them out and gave or threw them away. Now that I have a cutting machine and I don't use a saw much I have gotten into classic and ported saws big time!! And the shame of it all is that my best friend owns the biggest pawn shop in town so it is un telling what I could have accumulated by now!!

Another great video sir. That last point is the very reason why I have been hanging out on builder channels and forums and have yet to port any of my saws.. unless you are using a proven formula AND duplicating their techniques results are certainly going to be all over the place. This applies ESPECIALLY where I run mostly Echos. I can't tell you how many examples of people using husky or stihl theory on them and their saw either lost power or they gained nothing. Saw porting is more voodoo than science.. and I say this coming from a science degree. Why? Too. Many. Variables. Without computer modelling or thousands of dollars worth of OEM jugs to play with it just takes a crapton of skill AND luck to get a working system. It blows my mind how you guys manage do it.

Yes, some principles/tweaks like a little ( not too much and also saw dependent as some have bottom ends stronger than others ) compression increase work across the board, others are more cylinder/saw design specific. Tried to explain to another saw guy recently that you have to step back and see these as an exercise in thermodynamics and then they make more sense, especially the new ones.

I have a 362xp small mount from 1998. Just like your jonsered version there's not much love for them but I really like mine also. I actually like the fact that the cases and crank are beefy for a 60+cc saw. I find them to be quick revving with plenty of power. Great videos with alot of information on these saws👍
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand Год назад
Yup same crank / bearings etc. as a 372 with a whole lot less energy applied to and thru the crank with their open port and smaller bore cylinders.

@@afleetcommand My 362xp is a closed port but not quad port like the 372xp. Just two good sized ports

Yup a cylinder unique to those saws too BTW. Bob wants me to "give it a try" and I want to build the 2163 with a 48mm :) A dilemma

Hey Walt, what about, boring out a 372xt just enough for an iron sleeve to be pressed into the cylinder and THEN rework the cylinder with a REMOVABLE head and bore out the intake for the HUGE carb flow that is possible and THEN porting and polishing but when you do lower the new cylinder so that it’s equivalent in overall height to the old edition saw and take advantage of the intake size and put the runners where they should be. JB WELD enough for using the (now) shorter piston and even using a 375 style piston to keep the balance properly where it should be. Ported properly I’d think that it’s going to be an orangutan and awesome saw. Has anyone ever ran that idea by you before?

Have an article from the late 1970's where that essentially was a build concept for a Jonsered 111 based race saw. But on these things I would ask what is the definition of win? For me on this channel it's cost effective fun and useful saws where there is interaction with saws the hobby folks with typical tools and skills can also do. I have never focused on the "Showing Off It's All About Me" type of freak show or pure race saw video's where I do things most who watch can't or wouldn't derive a benefit from. What I have as a core focus is simply enabling other folks, not selling my shop or skill's. Showing folks how to interact with their favorite machines themselves, not promoting my particular skills as tool. I RELUCTANTLY put in lathe things from time to time because I HOPE as growing part of the hobby saw community moves there in their own quest. Help folks stretch their boundaries. When I see that is more typical, I will do as I did with "enabling" folks to learn saw mechanics by building kits, and split cases, I will add more sophisticated machining projects :) Until then? Machine work stays a little "dark" and more tools from Lowes builds happen. Right now the focus on the Autotunes for regular folks theme.

Does the 2063 small mount share the same crank as the large mount 2165 or 2171? And I hope you are still planning on doing a 550xp series. Thanks for all your valuable information. You have taught me a lot about saws.

yes. Can bolt all the cylinders from those original edition versions right on
@erichaymore5902
@erichaymore5902 Год назад
@@afleetcommand ok but is the crank unique to the 2063 cases like the 562 crank won't work in the 555 cases because of the large vs small mount situation the length is different if I remember correctly from one of your videos of ultimate old man saw.
@afleetcommand
@afleetcommand Год назад
You have a point, the 555 & 562 cranks have two area's where they differ, one on the clutch side as the oil pump is all different, the 555's are essentially like a 550's so that end of the crank is all different to accommodate, AND the 562 has stuffers while the 555 does not, The stuffers require a little more clearance side to side so the crank is machined differently to accommodate. I don't think a 2163 has stuffers, I could be wrong so when we "crack" that saw we will see for sure. And I think the clutch & oil pump are dimensionally the same on the 2163 where they hold the bar oil pump & clutch as the large mount saws. I COULD be wrong, buy I think they have the same crank. WE WILL SEE! When I get into that saw :)

I've got a question for you, I have a 2171 that's begun to start real hard,put in a carb kit same thing, once I get it running runs great for 5-10 minutes and then it starts bogging down like its running out of fuel
