This is a good point. I just realized this. There are many great speakers, lecturers and thinkers who are wise and admirable but after awhile I get tired of them or need a break. However, it's not the same with Dr. Peterson. I could literally listen to him non-stop and not get tired of him. Something about him.

Jordan’s “pearls” never cease to surprise...”I see something I fear...this means dragon; AND gold...right here”. We have nothing to lose by trying to beat the dragon; at the very least there is only learning to be had - even if that particular dragon wins that round. Knowledge is second only to air!

To transform yourself, you have to confront the murky snake in a dark cave. You have to find the things that you are avoiding though you know you should do it. If you dare to voluntarily face things that you don't know how to do and let the consequences transform yourself, you will grow. Don’t avoid things that are necessary to pursue the goal just because they cause negative emotions. It's a tough thing to know that the world is not safe. Nevertheless, you'll get to be competent and persist despite sufferings in life.

Courage often seems superfluous in ways it wouldn't have been in the past. Then, you stumble across fear and are offered a chance to do something about it. It is a lot more impressive when it is very real and right in front of you. Then, you know what courage entails.

Peterson says "it's not 'follow your bliss'", a direct counter to that other modern champion of mythology and archetypes, Joseph Campbell. From Campbell I always got the impression that "follow your bliss" meant pursuing what inspires you, what you enjoy working hard at, what causes you to lose track of time, etc. Sounds wonderful, if a bit new agey and idealistic. And the truth is, we often don't do it. Why? Because dragons are those things that can limit your territory of exploration, and can devour you if you get too close. Does one have to conquer one's dragons to follow one's bliss? It won't hurt. They're likely guarding territory that contains a higher bliss, and they can greatly inhibit what little bliss one is trying to follow. Like the artist who never activates the bold daring visions within for fear of criticism, spending a life circling it from a distance, "pursuing his bliss", but never fully realizing it. So in a way, the treasure the dragon guards *is* the bliss, or the exponential growth of it. Campbell just didn't focus on the terrifying consequences of his statement. Peterson says something like, "no this is going to scare the crap out of you, but it's more than worth it, in fact it's necessary if you want to truly live".

Your predicament sounds pretty shitty, and I can't imagine what it's like for you. Also, I don't know anything about you or the details of your situation, so what I have to say is very speculative. Having said that, this sounds something like a Harvey Weinstein scenario, so maybe there's some leverage possible for you here in the wake of the #metoo movement. But you've likely thought of that, so maybe not. My intuition is telling me that the more something requires you to sacrifice your values, the more likely it is to be a mirage, or a "let down" as you put it. That is actually a big part of what addiction is, btw. It lures people with a taste of heaven, "touching the stars", peace, whatever (depending on the drug of course). Then it takes more and more to get less and less of a taste, until the only reason you're using is to feel normal and to avoid the hell of withdrawal. In the meantime, you've had to sacrifice all your values such as loyalty, honesty, etc. to sustain the habit. Is your dream an illusion, an inevitable letdown? I couldn't possibly say. But have you spoken to dancers who are already there? Are they genuinely happy? Are they experiencing everything that you imagine it to be? What are the downsides? And if they claim it's great, can you tell if they're rationalizing (to justify what they went through and might still be going through), or if it's genuine? Also, I'm not sure exactly what you mean by "touching the stars". It could entail a need for recognition (which I definitely recognize within myself), or it could also imply an experience of transcendence. Recognition comes to very few, and I suspect it's very overrated (I wouldn't know personally). But experiences like transcendence and meaningfulness are different. My faith is that these things are available to everyone, and that nobody is required to sacrifice their values in order to experience them. That's actually part of what makes them so great; they don't leave a bitter taste due to the requirements of attaining them. When it comes to these sexual predators, or any external circumstances which you ultimately can't be guaranteed to "defeat", at the very least, don't let them defeat you. New possibilities will open up that you never saw before. There is always a way, not to every external result (e.g. becoming a dancer), but to every internal result (e.g. meaningfulness and transcendence) So in the process of transformation that comes with facing our dragons the result may or may not look how we preconceived it would. It may or may not show up as what we thought we wanted. But it *will* show up for those who go through the process. Personally, my greatest (and unintentional at first) achievement in life, and most meaningful and rewarding experience, has been raising my two children to the best of my ability. It has required a lot of sacrifices (e.g. I've been a barista for 14 years so I could be there for them, instead of using that time to pursue a better paying, more socially respected career). But I never had to sacrifice my values. Quite the opposite. I've grown tremendously, and I'm not sure what would be more meaningful than that. I'm just a random guy online, but I hope these words will be of some help, and I wish you the best of luck.
@krystenowens5276
@krystenowens5276 6 лет назад
I hear what you're saying. Maybe I should transcend my being to find other ways to achieve my dreams and keep what morals I do have alive; I was so ready to feed them to the lions man because I do want fame. I deleted my comment, so as to not keep personal business out there too long,, but thanks for your reply.
@onefugue
@onefugue 6 лет назад
chini with, to be honest, I regret using the word transcendence because I'm not entirely sure what it means to transcend one's being. But if it means something to you and if you think you can genuinely do it, then great. I do believe it means something, I just don't know exactly what it looks like, or if it's an appropriate way to deal with your particular issue. What I do know is the value of orienting oneself toward a meaningful purpose. It can help one endure and overcome a lot of hardship and suffering. Things which are probably unavoidable in life and the process of growth. Also, there's nothing wrong with wanting fame and recognition. It's good to be aware of it, and be careful not to let it drive you to do anything that's not in your best interest.

I want to face my fears, and know i can handle it (which ive been in enough situations to know that i can) and i want to grow up. Im 26 but i feel like im 16. I never had a father to help me grow up. And i believe experience is the best teacher. It has nothing to do with "thrill seeking." It has to do with maturity by fire.

We come to terms with only actually having control of just ourselves and thats fine, go away.

I have this weird issue where I avoid eye contact with people simply because when I do look at them they avert their eyes. They can look at me while I look away or I can look at them while they look away but we can never meet in the middle

JP is right on the money here about your personal demons being the worst. I've watched the worst horror movies you can think of -- The Exorcist, The Human Centipede, Hostel, Baskin, etc. -- and let me tell you those are a cuddly delight compared to how I feel when I upset someone and/or let them down, or how I feel when I think I've wasted a significant chunk of my life. I'd rather go through what all of those characters went through in those movies than experience what I feel when my aforementioned personal troubles confront me. I'm not exaggerating. I am extremely intelligent and insanely enthusiastic about working my ass off. I could have been a billionaire or a top-cited scientist by now if I wasn't fucking crippled by my fear of mistreating people and misusing time.

This is as simple as going to work in the morning, or as hard as i think it is to go to work in the morning, all the more reason to go.

I am scared of my psychopathic father who has controlled and manipulated me until I cut contact when I was 14 years old because I realized what was going on. I am 22 now and since then have not talked to him. I have been scared of him ever since and I am afraid to be confronted by him. How can I solve this or am I a hopeless case? I know when I would try to talk to him, he would just try to manipulate me again and I am scared of giving in when he would play the victim or something.

I fought many dragons and get many treasures and wounds. Hopefully the fights seem to be endless, they rarely take the shapes we would like but when those boring and disgusting enemies are killed, more interesting bosses arrived.
