Joseph Bodin de Boismortier, le cui composizioni consistono quasi esclusivamente in musica da camera, è certamente uno dei musicisti che meglio rappresenta lo spirito del tempo.
Nato a Thionville, in Lorena, il 23 dicembre 1689, trascorse la sua giovinezza a Metz, poi si trasferì a Perpignan prima di stabilirsi definitivamente a Parigi intorno al 1723.
Non si sa nulla della sua formazione musicale, ma sappiamo che presto padroneggiò sia il violino che il flauto, e che quest'ultimo rimase il suo strumento preferito.
A Parigi, la sua produzione e la sua reputazione erano tali che non ebbe mai bisogno di cercare la protezione dei potenti, infatti non ricoprì incarichi ufficiali.
In un catalogo di 130 raccolte repertoriate, la forza di Boismortier, fu quella di comporre con una varietà di colori esemplare.
Pochi strumenti sfuggirono alla sua penna e quasi nessuna forma musicale gli fu sconosciuta.
Nel suo catalogo si contano così opere per flauto traverso, ovviamente, ma anche flauto dolce, oboe, violino, violoncello, viola da gamba, musette, ghironda, fagotto, clavicembalo nelle forme della suite, della sonata, del duetto, del trio, del quartetto, del quintetto e dei più diversi concerti.
Portando l'arte e lo stile a un livello raramente eguagliato, Boismortier seppe sposare i timbri e mescolare i suoni all'interno di queste forme.
Anche la musica vocale attrasse la sua attenzione, perché scrisse cinque opere, sei piccoli mottetti, quattro grandi mottetti, due cicli di quattro cantate francesi, una raccolta di cantatille e soprattutto quasi quattordici volumi di arie a una o più voci.
Dopo un'esistenza dedicata alla musica e alla famiglia, Boismortier morì il 28 ottobre 1755 nella sua tenuta di Roissy-en-Brie.
Le suites dell'Opera 35 sono scritte per flauto traverso e basso, ma come indicato sul frontespizio "sont ornées de tous leurs agréments" e "on pourra les jouer sans basse".

In Paris, his output and reputation were such that he never needed to seek the protection of the powerful, in fact he held no official positions.
In a catalog of 130 cataloged collections, Boismortier's strength was to compose with an exemplary variety of colours.
Few instruments escaped his pen and almost no musical form was unknown to him.
In his catalog there are works for transverse flute, obviously, but also recorder, oboe, violin, cello, viola da gamba, musette, hurdy-gurdy, bassoon, harpsichord in forms of the suite, the sonata, the duet, the trio, the quartet, the quintet and the most diverse concerts.
Bringing art and style to a level rarely equaled, Boismortier knew how to marry timbres and blend sounds within these forms.
Vocal music also attracted his attention, for he wrote five operas, six small motets, four large motets, two cycles of four French cantatas, a collection of cantatillas and above all almost fourteen volumes of arias for one or more voices.
After a life dedicated to music and family, Boismortier died on 28 October 1755 at his estate in Roissy-en-Brie.
The suites of Opus 35 are written for flute and bass, but as indicated on the title page "sont ornées de tous leurs agréments" and "on pourra les jouer sans basse".
