A magnificent performance of this delightful symphony with a great Presto. I recently discovered the magnificent music of Joseph Martin Kraus, his c-minor symphony (VB 142) is an overwhelming beautiful work. Thank you !
This German composer is most definitely underplayed. This is a delightful composition, as is the Symphony in A major. The excellent program notes tell you all you need to know about him. A great post all round.
Absolutely extraordinary(!) Today, the history of music is "turned upside down" and does not correspond to the real facts; it is seen from the angle of Mozart and Haydn as if they were musical icons at the time (for contemporaries). For example, in Vienna at that time lived one of the musical icons who lived independently with the help of aristocrats, he lived in the elite part of the city, from the sale of his notes - Wanhal. Favored composer of Empress Marie Therese - Wranitzky. The purpose of Leopold Mozart's trip to London in 1764 was to present his gifted children at court and private concerts and to "reap" financial benefits. L. Mozart: "Over the next few months, I will have to make every effort to conquer the aristocracy, and this will require a lot of galloping and hard work. But if I achieve the goal I set for myself, I will catch a fine fish or, better said, a good catch of guinea. "To increase his earnings, he used the guest appearance of the famous castrate Manzoli - in Handel's operas:" Ezio "," Berenice "; "- so Leopold's children performed after private castrato concerts in the houses of aristocrats and merchants.
Thank you for your comment. Fortunately, for many of us Mozart is no longer an "icon". I don't ignore his musical works, some of them are real masterpieces, but that doesn't mean I don't know that he was inspired and even he copied, sometimes, from other illustrious composers in their time; his music must be put in a correct historical perspective. Comparing the composers each other is, in my opinion, an incorrect concept. This affect our understanding of the Classical period and many significant composers, of whom Mozart was just one of them, were unduly ignored. This is the reason why I post especially from the music of these unjustly forgotten composers.
I think the name "swedish Mozart" is somewhat misplaced. Apart from the era they lived in, they have barely anything in common, i can savely say, that they are opposites: Mozart used mainly major keys in addition with cheerfull, catchy melodies the tone of his music is rarely serious. In kraus we hear predominantly minor keys, oppresive forlorn sounds, bombastic drama like Haydns Sturm und Drang Symphonies but much more uncompromising. Because of his considerable contribution to the symphonic genre, we should think of him as a composer on his own, not a swedish Mozart or Haydn.
Thank you for your comment. You are right, I also thought that this comparison was inappropriate (I copied it from Wikipedia). I listened to almost all of his symphonies and I did not find anything to do with Mozart's music.
@@sibarit101 and thank you for uploading this excellent works! I am happy that these are discovered and recorded in the last 2 decades after being forgotten for such a long time.
While I agree that Kraus is stylistically closer to Haydn' s Sturm und Drang, I don't agree on Mozart being "cheerful" and "light" - Mozart is often quite serious, more Baroque influenced than both Kraus and earlier Haydn, filled with counterpoint and chromaticism. And Mozart has a decent body of minor key works, also among the religious music
the first theme of the first movement is very similar to a different symphony. Eludes me right now - likely by Haydn. I will see if it hits me which one.
