Cal fan here.... You Auburn fans are hard core! Give your team some credit... It's not the end of the world. You guys have a good team and a fanbase that makes me jealous. I honestly think everyone underestimated Cal... Just like video says. And that created unrealistic expectations that ended up making it look worse than you think. Cal is a good team (not great...yet,lol) and so is Auburn. The sooner that fact settles in, the better your outlook will be about your team, i think. It's not all doom and gloom. This is beginning to be a great rivalry.... Hoping to meet you guys again someday for round 3. Best of luck in your season. 👍🏼
I am envious of all the fan support and coverage Auburn gets on RU-vid. Does Cal Football even have anyone doing a weekly podcast or something similar during the season? Since the game with Auburn I've seen at least one daily podcast on Auburn football and other coverage.
I think Cal is sneaky good. I was thinking the Auburn offense was improved enough to pull away late even though I knew the Cal defense was legit. I did not, however, know that Mendoza was going to be such a gamer and give our defense such lots in the first half. I knew that Cal secondary was very good, and I didn't see Thorne regressing so bad. Auburn will bounce back and upset someone like Josh says in the video. Cal will surprise some teams in their new conference. Hope all the Cal fans that came had a good experience in Auburn. WDE.
@@unclegene5372 Cal's coach sucks. Hugh Freeze is MUCH BETTER than Justin Wilcox. The difference came down to Cal being a much better and more historic program than Auburn. Cal has all the tradition (5 national championships to Auburn's 2). In this case, tradition and national significance overcame Auburn's coaching advantage.
There’s something unbelievably satisfying about seeing these SEC homers like Josh and Finebaum getting shut up real quick about these west coast teams beating up on SEC schools
Auburn's recent history suggest they shouldn't feel cocky against just about any Power 5 team, they'll still probably scare the crap out of one of the top tier SEC teams with absolutely no rational reasoning behind it. Such is the roller coaster that is Auburn football.
“You can’t lose to Cal” meant in order to have a good season and keep the fanbase happy this year. I can tell you right now the fans are ticked and our season is in major trouble.
@@tannercollins9863 that's funny, because teams from the south have won 16 of the last 20 national championships. We'll go ahead and count Texas as the west, not the south, USC and Texas...19 and 20 years ago.
Why would anyone say that was a shocker or that Auburn "can't lose to Cal?" Cal is a much better and more historically significant football program. Cal has 5 national championships. Auburn has just 2. So why would anyone think Auburn had the advantage?

@@raytree Yes, Justin Wilcox is a terrible coach with an overall losing record. Hugh Freeze has won wherever he has been. You guys are in good hands with Freeze. Just got to be patient. Wish we had him. He just ran into a buzzsaw. Cal's poor coaching wasn't enough to overcome our huge advantage in prestige and historic excellence/significance. Auburn is still developing its identity as a program. It already has 2 national championships, which is pretty good when compared to most programs. But they ran into a 5x national championship program. Hugh Freeze is a good coach. Give him time.
Cal fan here. The Cal win was an upset, but not shocking. Under Coach Wilcox, Cal has been disciplined and tough on D. AU probably has better personnel, but the gap isn’t that wide. Cal has some players, some real dogs on defense. The QB Mendoza has some game. Cal gets the most out of 3 star recruits. Give Cal a little credit. They play hard.
@@Ken94366 only push back I have is say we go spend all our money on your qb of choice, who’s he throwing it to? You can’t say the freeze 4 or KLS bc most of our money that would’ve went to a qb went to them.
I hear ya Josh, but that top 5 recruiting class isn’t going to stick around when 90k people are booing a 5 interception per game quarterback week in week out. We didn’t need Cam Ward, we needed a C+ guy who can throw middle school ball routes and throw the hot. Reasonably find me 4 wins left on the schedule playing the way Auburn played on Saturday and ask yourself if Hugh Freeze won’t have a single regret about a portal QB or lack thereof when he goes 4-8 in his second season.
Whomp whomp whomp. CALIFORNIA WON! Go BEARS 🐻 Who’s your daddy now. Go CAL! On a side note: California is the 4th largest economy in the WORLD. Aaron Rodgers, Jared Goff, Marshawn Lynch all from Cal. We NEVER believed that SEC was better than any West Coast teams like USC, Oregon, Washington or UCLA. Southern folks just talk a good game. Better quality of life in the West Coast ( Silicon Valley) where most of the billionaires in America live.😅
Without JAYDEN OTT mind you. Bro was on one leg. ACC fans don’t understand they got the two most annoying pac 12 teams. Cal and Stanford are going to ruin some teams season. Watch lol
I appreciate the level headed take Josh you and I both know that when OU or Uga bend AU over and make them like it Freezes seat will grow warmer. 6-6 is the best I see now and Freeze cannot have multiple 21+ point losses. Course I'm just a fan.
I think any SEC fan CAN go there thinking Cal is better, not because we love the PAC12 remnant teams, but because nobody thinks auburn is good but auburn.
I've been drinking the Auburn Kool-aide being poured by Auburn podcasts for 8 months now. I was genuinely shocked and deeply disappointed by what I saw Saturday. Maybe I should limit my football podcasts to Josh Pate. Oh well. " War Eagle!" anyway.
One time is how many times PT has thrown for over 200 yards vs a top 50 defense That one time? Vs Pitt in a bowl game where multiple players on defense sat out for Pitt
Big Auburn fan here, that game was tough to watch. This video made me feel a little better. Auburn fans have to be patient and let Freeze build this team.
@@tarpontime7562 Stop blaming Harsin….that’s like Biden blaming Trump on Afghan withdrawal that left 13 dead. Wasn’t like Harsin inherited a great roster from Gus. HF owns this year and the QB situation. Period.
Hey pate if mizzou continues to pitch a shut out for 4 straight games going into the A&M game u recon you could do a segment on them for the first time since July? Seeing as they’re ranked 6 in the nation. Love the show
Instead of shopping around the portal for a QB, how about recruiting one out of high school and bringing him up in your system. I know this idea seems far fetched in 2024 but makes sense to me
This is why i listen to you more than most. Lol I've agreed with you on so many things. I was born in bama and raised auburn. I'm also logical. I knew auburn wasn't worth all the hype they were getting for no reason. A few transfers here and there, but still a trash qb. There were some bad calls by the refs, but mostly auburn isn't there yet. Ive been giving auburn a repeat season from last year. Maybe a 5-7 or 6-6 season
It’s funny everyone assumes all sec teams are top tier and that’s far from the truth you have a select few teams that are dominate and then the rest of the conference like most can be beat by similar talented schools.
The same thing happened when the USC played there at Jordan Hare (2003).....23-0, This one could have been the same type of MOV pretty easily. Funny thing is Cal was that Jekyll and Hyde team of the PAC, and Auburn fills the same role (albeit with more success) within the SEC ecosystem, these are those teams that pull up in their mystery machine and you never know which one you're gonna get.
Freeze made an absolutely colossal mistake hitching his wagon to Thorne. He is what he is at this point, so it's up to the coaches to gameplan to his strengths, which are few...and once they lose to Arkansas, all the recruiting momentum will begin to stall.
Absolutely it was frustrating to lose to Cal like that. But Auburn fans are very quick to forget the absolute train wreck that Harsin left the program in. It's going to take about 3 to 4 years to see an Auburn team that can compete. I'm guessing we finish the season 5-7 at the worst and maybe 7-5 at very best. Just be patient, y'all. Better days are coming.
Any top coach can come in and patch together a team good enough to beat Cal, in a lot less than 3-4 years, its not an FCS roster, just too much input from people with lots of money but no football sense. There is no "i" in team.
@letitroll610 I agree. Auburn had a good enough team to beat Cal easily. Unfortunately, they've always had a booster problem, and word on the street is, they control everything.
@@hunterwinters3739 What are the current other choices at QB?, most teams have at least 4 or 5 on the roster, after that showing they just need somebody that can stay calm, see the field and not go backwards. 5 Int's and only losing by 7 tells me the other parts of the team actually doing ok.
@letitroll610 I feel giving Brown or even White a chance during a game like NM would at least give these young guys experience. White is one of the highest rated QB's to be recruited and many other programs are starting true freshmen. Freeze even said in his interview yesterday that it is really hard for him to bench a guy that has proven himself in practice. Tells me that he's not willing to make the hard decisions under pressure. If it was Saban, Thorne would have never seen the second half.
A few facts about Auburn Auburn had better recruiting classes the last 4 years avg 18ranked Cal had an avg 55 ranked class That score could have been 27-7 in favor of cal. Harsin went 8-7 in 15 games Hugh 7-8 in 15 games. Thorne has regressed from MSU to Auburn look at his stats
Lots of blame at the QB position for Auburn but went easy on everyone else, especially the coaches insofar as the game goes. The coaches underestimated Cal, plain and simple. If they didn't ask too much of Thorne, kept the ball on the ground rather than putting it in the air, put together more conservative drives rather than going for knockout, Auburn would've been much more in the game. How many turnovers does it take before you change your plan and asking Thorne to throw against Cal's DB's playing zone while Cal's DLine is pressuring Thorne all day? There was an opening in the 2nd half but Auburn's coaches just went back to Thorne.
I would love a side by side of Harsin and Freeze after a lose!!! Both said the same things, accept I TAKE PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY, WE WILL NEVER AGAIN BE UNPREPARED FOR A GAME, WE WILL BE BETTER THE REST OF THE SEASON!!!! Nope, just its gonna take time before I do my job. A decade of poor play isn't what the fans of AUBURN deserve, If we had to go through growing pains would rather do it with coach Cadillac
Umm Josh you need to watch the game back and understand that it wasn't only the QB but it was mainly the QB to blame for the loss Saturday. This team will be nasty if you put a back up QB in who can just deliver the ball to the athletes. That is all you need. The defense actually played really well. Mendoza or whatever his name was for Cal was throwing dots all game, some dots that not many QB's will throw most of the time. I like our chances at most games if Hugh will just make the switch.
Hugh Freeze will be gone after next year. Hopefully the powers that be will then go after a coach with the integrity and competence to deserve that job.
If any Auburn fan was expecting more than 7-5 this year, you were lying to yourselves. This year wasn't the year. Have to give Brother Hugh one more year.
I think PT should be benched. It’s like when you lend your friend money and he doesn’t pay you back. You cut your losses and your friend and move forward. I’d rather struggle with breaking in a new qb that’s been in the system 2 years than a 5th year senior that’s been in the system for 2 years but can’t see the field when pressured and can’t throw a deep ball. Keeping him in because he can run when a play breaks down is idiotic.
I'm not surprised Auburn lost to Cal. I'm not surprised when they lose to anyone since they spend their entire season practicing to play Alabama instead of playing the team thats in front of them.
How many times have we seen the failure of paying big money to portal guys this year? FSU, NC State, Texas A&M, and the others we have yet to see falter against good competition. Auburn is not going to get better through the portal as many teams in the country can match, or exceed, them. I could go further and say there’s 5 teams in the SEC that have better NIL collectives, and more cash on hand than Auburn. Fans just need to let Hugh Freeze do his job and rebuild. Yes this is a rebuild and it’s going to take a few more years. During the way he may upset some teams, or lose to teams he shouldn’t, but that’s all part of the process.
Plain and Simple Hugh Freeze is lazy. He didn't go after a QB in portal knowing Thorne was horrible. He will coach hard for Ga/ Bama type games and lose games he should win. Thorne is an empty helmet, you can look into his eyes and see it. He just throws balls out to midfield and hopes
Wrong. The only relation Auburn has to you is being in the same state. The intangibles, of which you know nothing, will forever keep Auburn head and shoulders above UAT.
If the PAC12 didn’t die? The BIG10 would’ve only gotten 2 teams in the new 12 team playoffs… Our Trojans are about to shake up the world and win the Natty!!! The powers that be will be going absolutely crazy! 😂😂😂😂
