@@AnthonyAbbettNIU also got a terrible spot at the end of the game where they brought the ball back a whole yard when it was clearly a first down. worst spot I’ve ever seen. That likely would have ended it. Then they stopped the clock after third down for ND to even have a chance to kick a fg. Either way you don’t lose to Northern Illinois like that. So, between 3 different seasons with 4 different QBs and 3 different OCs and the answer is still to put in the backup QB? There has been one constant here, and it's the head coach. The problem is Marcus Freeman wants a risk-free, cautious offense. It hamstrung Sam Hartman, who went from a gunslinger and one of the most accomplished college QBs ever to a cautious game manager unable to make basic throws when he came here. Riley is showing these same signs. He's not allowed to play his game, he's not in rhythm with the game, and he looks absolutely horrible as a result. You don't bring in Shaq to shoot the three, and you don't bring in Riley Leonard to be a game manager. Steve Angeli would be a better game manager than Riley, but the problems with the offense would still be there. Marcus has to trust his hires and stop micromanaging the offense. Both Riley and Sam had less talent on their teams and performed better against the same teams before they came to Notre Dame. It's not a talent issue at QB, and we brought in arguably the best Offensive Coordinator in the country.

Riley does not look confident at all and it’s most likely because he is being told cast aside what makes him great and to do as he is told, which is what MF said before the game. Just gotta let your players make plays and not hold them back. Same with the OC and DC, set them loose and let them do what they were brought in to do!

Upset is similar to the NCAA BB tournament, where the 12 seed beats the the 5. It usually happens because a veteran team plays 1st year or 2nd year guys. The Huskies have 4th,5th, and 6th year Lineman playing against younger guys and leaned on the Irish. Combined that with Northern having 30 Srs on the squad and the young Irish guys were not ready to play. ND will still go anywhere from 11-1 to 9-3.

I am not a Notre Dame fan, but with NIL I believe the coaches at the big programs greatest challenge is to motivate players that are extremely pampered. The MAC players have always wanted to muddy the big programs. Now they have an additional motivation one that goes way back class warfare. It is always nice to rub the rich kids face in it. Not to mention, I am sure some of these players on N. Illinois just quadrupled their next year NIL $ and will end up in a bigger program. You might even see some at ND. Apparently, Freeman worked his team very hard in the week before the NiIU game. They looked like a tired team, and Freeman is not experienced enough to know when to push his team harder and when to back off. Secondly, Freeman doesn't know that Leonard is a bad fit for Denbrock' Kelly-like offense. It requires a highly accurate QB to work.

But it is something. Penn State was pushed, Oregon was pushed. Tulane has been on the rise but with a new coach they could have beaten kansas state. I doubt there won't be another team this season.

Riley Leonard needs to run, he is a game momentum QB. He has to hit his groove and he gets that by making plays with his legs. I've watched his film enough and learned he is rhythm QB. His running abilities are incredible and his run game lets his passing game open up cause he is being a Playmaker. He is not a Drop Back Timing QB. He should almost never asked to be a Pocket QB. It almost seems like he wanted to come to ND to learn that and not use his legs this far. No kid your money is in them legs. When he is racking up 7-10 yards a carry, he passes for 250+ and he is a very scary player, but if you don't let him run then he is one dimensional and unfortunately right now, that one dimension of his is his worst part of his abilities. He couldnt pass the ball if he was unpressured last week. He severely under threw one out faster WRs, who was behind the safety and walks into the end zone if Riley puts more arm and air on the ball.....just a horrid display of being a passer last game

Kelly got them about as far as they can go. ND will always have trouble against the Georgias of the league due to academic standards. They did beat a # 1 ranked Clemson a few years ago. Look at NDs schedule from 2017-2021 and tell me he wasn’t a great coach. All W’s. There’s no coach that can make ND compete consistently against and Alabama or Georgia

Not sure how you can say that, considering how dominant ND was over his tenure. Maybe LSU isn’t a good fit for him, but more likely he’s getting old and his best years are behind him? I knew when BK left ND was in trouble. ND can’t compete against the big SEC schools, they’ll never be able to dominate like they did way back in the day. The fact that they were competing in or for the playoff every year under Kelly is all you can ask for, and not lose to teams like Northern Illinois, which he never did
