I bought a Wireless keyboard for my wife for Christmas. To try it out I set it up with my iPhone and used the Journal App. A bit strange as the screen was a bit small but it was fine. I like Journal - it’s pretty cool.

I think I'll stick with my current method, but if I need inspiration or to be reminded of something I did during the day, I'll poke my head into the Journal app and see what it suggests. Then continue on my merry way.

Thank you - best intro to Journal I've seen. I really like Journal and have been using it for the last month or so. But I hate doing all that text entry on the iPhone - I'd MUCH rather do it on my Mac, as you do. My favorite app for text entry is Drafts, which I have on all my devices - iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. I've been typing my entries into Drafts on my Mac, and when I'm done editing I pick up my iPhone, open Drafts, select my future Journal entry, click on the share action, choose Journal, and boom, there it is in Journal. It's not any fewer steps than copy and paste from one device to the other, but once in a great while copy and paste fails to transfer devices for whatever reason, but Drafts always seems to sync perfectly, quickly, and automatically without even thinking about it. I delete my Journal entry from Drafts after I'm sure I've finished editing it. I do hope Journal will come to the Mac eventually and sync as perfectly between devices as Drafts.

The audio microphone works well to dictate entries, which is why I decided to try Journal, as I couldn't be bothered texting.

Document handoff is truly cool. I'm always amazed when I learn those who use lesser OS's don't know about it. In fact, I've learned not to mention it. Not so many years ago you could find yourself in a pillory for witchery of that magnitude. It's better not to stir false hope among the benighted. Paraphrasing Kipling: _As I pass through my incarnations in every age and race,_ _I make my proper prostrations to the Gods of the Market-Place._ _Browsing with reverent mouse I watch them flourish and fall,_ _And the Gods of the Blue Screen Exception, I notice, outlast them one and all._ Well, that was dark. Perhaps I can shake that off in a journal entry.

I really do just unthinkingly use that copy and paste between devices, but there is one version that tickles me so much I wish I could find reason to use it more. You can pinch-in to copy an image on, say, your iPad, and then pinch-out over an iPhone to paste it. This is exactly the same thing, but done with images and gestures, it's like magic.

I saw that Midnight Mass notation...also glad you type well...we have discussed journaling and I gave my recommendations to you. Sorry, gotta go and made a journal entry before I go on the Chocolate Road. Entry will be something like, watched Gallagher will stay with the daily system I've now used 37 years. "this is simply what happens" Admittedly, I think us Mac users take some of the effortless functionality on Macs for granted. It's dreadful in the Microsoft Windows world. Great video as always, William.

Thanks for this review. I use Obsidian to Journal and write but the Journal features sound enticing, IF, you can export and import. I look forward to what someone does with the API.

The Three Biscuit phrase is mine rather than an English one. It's a reference to how these videos have to be rather long -- because they attempt to cover everything on a topic in one go -- and so I suggest you need provisions. Biscuits are my favourites, so that's all. It was an idle thought when I first did it but it's caught on: at an event, a stranger brought me three biscuits because of it. That made me so happy.

It's not cancelled, it's just proving preposterously difficult to do. I've also had some odd problems that might be to do with Keyboard Maestro, but might not be, so I'm slowly investigating. You've made me mentally bump it back up the list of priorities, though, thank you.

I need a search feature so badly and I would really, really like if Journal saw what I was doing in safari (on all my devices) or at least what I bookmark. My work-around for the typing issue is to screen mirror to my mac and use a bluetooth keyboard on my phone. Still have to use the phone to add music, podcasts, and photos but that's easy enough as is. When Journal was released in beta, I started using it to have sort-of conversations with arts and culture articles and books. Basically I make notes about what other people's stories/plays/art/music etc. inspired in me or inspired me to create. Now I have probably fifty or sixty entries to dig through for the germs of new projects and I can't search for #newIdea like I assumed I would be able to do

I’m not at all sure whether this will help or just mean more for you to go through, but do you know about getting Siri to remind you of things like webpages you’re reading? Whatever you’re doing on your iPhone, say “Siri, remind me about this.” A lot of the time, it will just work. And when it doesn’t, for any reason, Siri asks what you want to be reminded about and you could type something there.

Well, I will give it a go, but the jury is only just still out in my view. I fear the restrictions may outweigh the value the prompts. I wonder why it is not called Silo. Or StraightJacket. The Shortcut, Remember This, linked to Notes as it is, may well be better for my purposes. But - I'll give it a go for sure. Thanks for the review and prompt.

I didn't know about Remember This: thank you. One peculiar thing: if you search the Shortcuts Gallery for the words "Remember This", it doesn't find it. Search for just "Remember" and it's there, it's the only result returned. Even though the name displayed is the full "Remember This". Apple is just messing with my head.

@@WilliamGallagher I liked it and the ideas behind it, but to be honest it has not really stuck and become part of my use - like many of these things. But you do dictate into it - if I recall correctly. I cannot imagine doing long form writing into an iPhone, so Journal is unlikely to be a success for me until text can be dictated in. .

How about using an external display to connect your iPhone to a Mac? I think it would work only for the 15 lineup since they have usb-c.

Odd: RU-vid is saying I haven't replied to this and I saw me type to you. If you get this twice, never tell me whether I say something different. What I believe I just wrote was that this does work with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, but it's specifically for connecting a display to the phone, you're not connecting it to a Mac. You could separately connect a wireless keyboard to the iPhone, though.

@@WilliamGallagher ah right! I just tried air playing my iPhone screen to the Mac and using a wireless keyboard connected to the iPhone. Unfortunately, there is no landscape mode for the Journal app so its not a great experience.

I tried that. After the comment went away the first time, I recreated it, then copied it before sending, but it went away again. I pasted in the copied version and sent again, but still no joy. Tried repeatedly. It was weird. If you're sure you don't mind me emailing you, I could do that. Thanks for the offer. Now watch, this one will go through just fine, I bet. If so, maybe I'll try to remember what I wrote the other day and add it below. @@WilliamGallagher

Huh. Must have been a fluke. Things seem to be working now. I think what I said the other day about your Journal video is that I like your idea of writing on the Mac and copying over to the phone, but I would far more enjoy the Journal app on MacOS. Think I'll wait for it to arrive there before trying it out. I said some other stuff, but those thoughts are "lost in time, like tears in rain." (Rutger Hauer)

Nice introduction to Journal, but this seems like a useless appendage. There are so many better options for keeping a journal on an iPhone, that this seems like a complete waste of Apple's programming efforts.

It's an odd one. Especially during the beta testing, it felt like they were rushing it but I can't see there was a pressing need. But still, what's good about it is good, I do like it.
