I have an appreciation for all of the Journey band members. They are very talented. Steve is the closest one to my heart. His voice and talent stood out for me. Always a fan.
Steve’s response at 6:06 to the interviewer may have been correct at the time but, that definitely changed over time. Most people remember Steve Perry more than the other band mates. He will always be the voice of Journey.
@@magic5596 -First, let me say I love Steve Perry. His nuanced approach to power and soul is unrivaled in his time. But, Schon is not just one of your friends, lol. But, let's indulge your comment about not contributing for a minute. Take Mother, Father, just a great song out of many on Escape. Schon took a piece his Dad, a classical composer, reworked and arranged his composition, it was the other musicians who had some contributions based on their specific instrument, but the underlying structure was created by Schon through his father's original work. The notion that guitarists don't influence composition and the style of a band is pretty ridiculous and just plain wrong. There is enough evidence of that. Schon brings many things to Journey but one of the most important aspects of their sound he brings is dynamics compositionally, while Cain brings elegance. Lastly, why the fuck doesn't Steve Perry's solo stuff sound anything like Journey? Even when he went solo in his prime that stuff doesn't sound like Journey outside of his voice. None of the dynamic composition is there that Schon was responsible for, none of the elegance that Cain brought. But, you can hear all of that in the work with Steve Augieri, including melody that sounds Perry-esque. I am not sure you understand how much of the sound of Journey is Schon. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-3U84ZMFLCF8.html or ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HM6GvJgTCmk.html
@@magic5596 Most of the songs Steve Perry wrote were about his life experiences, he said so in various interviews he's done. That's why he put so much emphasis and emotion in his songs due to this fact. Which is why his vocal/singing style is so great. This why no one else can sing the songs with that same emotion and present the songs the way he does, whether on studio recordings or live in concert. He was singing from his heart. Steve Perry always gave 100% plus of himself all of the time. You can't copy PERFECTION!
@@magic5596 I provided evidence, you provided opinion. And, Popular music tastes had already changed, which is why Steve Perry didn't have a hit on the last albums they did with Journey. Even your own opinions are bullshit and full of holes. Go argue your opinion somewhere else. Specifically, go to a Van Halen or Black Sabbath video and claim that Eddie Van Halen or Toni Iommi don't matter, lol.
Nobody was bigger than Journey 1978-1983......tractor trailers cruising the country setting them up endlessly. Perry was “The Voice” before the term was coined.
Vern Gosdin is "The Voice" of country music. So glad to see how someone likes an array of music like me. Vern, Rex and Adam Gosdin (all three brothers) hold a very special place in my heart. I am a Gosdin also. Gosdin is German too. like Schon (Neal) is German. Love you daddy. kimie
I was surprised by the intelligence of young SP when I first saw this clip. Since then I have seen many more, confirming that he was not only super talented and sexy, but also very smart.
Steve Perry is indeed very intelligent and savvy because I heard somewhere that he negotiated with the band before he left that he owns the rights to a heafty percent of anything journey does. Merchandise, concerts, any types of ads using his image etc and probably more things than I can think of here. I believe if someone uses his songs or the songs the band sang/sings etc.
The best thing was Rollie wasn't pushed out of Journey. He thought Perry was cool. I was reading an interview about that yesterday. Rollie is a nice guy. But I loved the way he and Perry sang together.
I know EXACTLY what you mean!!! They were the hottest in the 80's. I thank GOD everyday that I got to grow up in the 70's and 80's it was the most AWESOME time in REAL ROCK n ROLL!!! WE are privileged enough to be still listening to the same music that made growing up as teenager's The Best Time's of Our Lives!!! Thank You, Journey!!!♊❤💋🎶😍🎵🎤🎼💋🤟
@@joereich686 I also agree 💯 this is my favorite lineup as well. Love when Gregg & Steve shared vocals on " Feeling That Way", I also wished Neal sang lead vocals more often, " People And Places" is 1 of my top 5 favorite Journey songs.❤️
This is Journey...greg and niel start the band..Steve Perry make the band famous..❤️❤️❤️ My God Steve was so handsome in his younger years..even now..still very handsome despite his age😘😘😘
It's funny that Steve Perry, in this interview said that when the first started Journey or when ALL five of them became "THE JOURNEY BAND", the critics were harsh saying they had no direction, no cohesiveness with their music, that they're all just making noise. Well, I am shocked that no one talked about the fact that once they were ALL in the band and learned each other's strengths, they started to EVOLVE with their music, singing, playing each instrument that it all seemed to fall into place for them. I think that's why they became one of THE BEST ROCK n ROLL BAND'S, of all time. If you watch some of the earlier video's and watch Neal Schon play his guitar, then you'll see in later video's like, Faithfully, they had EVOLVED musically, instrumentality, vocals etc. That's when they became the true band called, "JOURNEY ". I rest my case. I'll be there at 90 year's old, good Lord willing still listening to, " THE VOICE". c/o 1984!!! To them and their Legacy, I'll always be their #1 fan!!! " FAITHFULLY ".♊❤💋🤟
Absolutely love Steve! Just from his speaking voice you can tell he’s a great singer! I grew up listening to journey but not as an adult I’m obsessed and have the biggest crush on 80’s Steve lol. He has the most amazing voice I’ve ever heard
Gregg Rolie is listed as number 18 out of 100 greatest rock keyboard and piano players of all time. Rightfully so, he is nothing short of phenomenal ... not to mention that smooth, sexy, black magic voice of his. Gregg rocks, then and now!! Gorgeous back in the day, and still looks amazing!!
Angel Deville I could think of maybe 10. I had no idea there were 100 notable rock keyboard and piano players, but then again, I've always been a guitar guy myself...
First of all EVERY one of Journey's albums was VERY special. There was not one that was a dumpster which is so IMPRESSIVE. I have to say Escape was they're BEST. It went #1, it has the most popular downloaded song of all time in Don't Stop Believing. It was not favorite to from top to bottom. It's OK to agree to disagree on our differences 🤗
Yes..this is when my man took the lead..they really didn't want him..but he proved them all wrong..My man took them by surprise because his voice made this band..and it will never be the same..btw he still rocks..love you Steven ♥️
That was one of the best interviews I've ever seen. I wish I could turn back time I'm 59 years old and as a teen Journey hit the right notes in my soul from the vocals to lead guitar to Rollies piano and keyboards . Just listening to bits of songs and the time this took place in this interview brings back these feelings and emotions as when I was a teen.❤️🥺
Man THIS was the best time to see a rock concert. And Journey are so good, on top of their game, so many great songs with harmonies. Greg Rolie on keyboards. Steve singing. This was pure rock. This must be the late 70s, do you also notice how everyone was skinny back then??
Thanks for sharing! This would have been a dream come true for me...to be this close to Journey Awesome! I L❤️VE all the songs, especially Any Way You Want It
I never had a problem figuring out who was the lead singer. Everybody knows Steve was the main draw for Journey. The sales for concerts and record sales prove that..
Journeys best years were the Greg Rolie yrs. I recognize Steve's voice, but as a band those were the best years when both sang. Evolution. Departure. Infinity
@sdc7823 - I agree. Gregg Rolie and Steve Perry together were the best. Steve has a great voice, and I always will remain a fan of his singing, but the best Journey version was the three albums of Rolie AND Perry TOGETHER.
This must be from the Blue Jean Network!! I remember seeing this on tv back in the day!! Always fun to see gems like this again!! Thank you for uploading this!
I was at the concert of all concerts. 1983, ORANGE ARENA- Orlando, FL. Bryan Adams, AEROSMITH, Sammy Hagar & JOURNEY. Bryan Adams- great band, great songs, great singer. AEROSMITH- poor, due to no Brad & Joe, Steven did not remember the words to Dream On. Sammy Hagar- well, Sammy Hagar. JOURNEY- had it all, they sounded just like their records on 10+. Each member had a time onstage alone. Each member took control and never let up. Steve Perry is one of a kind.
I'm watching this in Cleveland in 2020 okay still in love with Steve Perry. Been watching alot of him since he's return to singing again . I'm so glad he came back to us. Love ❤️❤️ you Steve Perry Always ❤️ ♥️
Breseis & friends afro since 1973 ( big afro on 1976) and on 1982 he get a haircut later he let grown his fro on Bad English and 1995 he get a very short haircut and 2001 the most short hair .
50 years - 45 years since Perry. 🤯Wow Time flies. My 3rd concert after John Denver and Queen... but I saw them equally as much as John. My taste is eclectic .... Denver - Perry - now Bruno Mars. The three couldn’t be more different yet all three such great singer/brilliant writers and charismatic storytellers. 💗💿🎤
Was Gregg wearing a sideways hat before the rap folks 'invented' doing that?!? lol... Also, Steve Perry in the Cadillac giving some very intelligent and insightful comments...
@@janebeatty9472 it began with Santana as he points out. Beautiful writer singer producer composer. 2x Hall if Fame inductee; although i do not put much stick in the Hall. Glad to her his music. They we're HUGE IN CHICAGO! I MEAN HUGE! JOURNEY CONTINUES.
So Gregg predicted that Steve was going to lead the band into Super Stardom and help them make millions .He sure was right. Too bad jealousy made him leave.
This explains why I don't remember Gregg Rolie's name. Their names were not really out there for quite a while. It was just Journey. From what I understand, Gregg Rolie was with them until about 1980.
Greg says here in this interview sure to a new lead singer 🤔 In the Journey MTV Behind the Music Herbie interviewed says the band wanted NOTHING to do with a new lead singer Steve Perry, and Herbie forced his participation in the band 🤨
Gregg rolie is one very good guy and a badass singer as well just listen to gregg in santana he's the shit and i have lots of pic together rock on gregg Modesto ca. And roots 👍
The whole band was amazing. Steve's voice was really the best!! He must have really burned out to give it all ip because he looked liked he was having a great time
3:02 as I understand, neither Gregg Rolie nor Neal Schon wanted Steve Perry in the band as they felt he was a crooner and not a screamer like they wanted, like Robert Fleischman was. However it was former manager Herbie Herbert who brought Steve to the band. After the success of the Infinity album, and with a few hit singles, it became evident to everyone that Steve Perry was Journeys meal ticket, and as such is why Aynsley Dunbar was sacked in the fall of 1978, and once Steve Perry Gaines full control of the band, ultimately founding member/bassist Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith were also canned during the Raised On Radio recording sessions.
Yep. Much can be said for Perry’s voice, for the songwriting chemistry between Perry, Schon and Cain. But the character that Ross Valory’s bass playing and Steve Smith’s drumming provides is absolutely integral to the sound of the band. Few drummers could have supported Perry and Schon on a level equal to them. Aynsley Dunbar was a great and exciting player, but when the band went more “crooner”-oriented, he didn’t adapt as well, and didn’t really want to. They hit the jackpot with the two Steves. Cain wrote or co-wrote some great songs, without which the band would have had fewer hits, but I miss Rolie’s voice and keyboard playing. His time feel (and chops/vocabulary) is better than Cain’s.
@drums333 I have NEVER listened to a band for the drummer, I really can't tell the difference. A drummer would have to be terrible for it to make a difference to me. The lead singer is always the most important part of a band to me. Don't get me wrong, I love instruments but, I love having a voice to go along with the instruments. Without Perry I am not listening to no drummer.
For Gregg to say he did all the vocals is a bit insincere. Both Michaels, Santana and Gregg all sung in the original Santana band. Obviously the music wasn't vocally centered and vocal harmonies weren't leaned upon
Just time to go. He had a long stint with Santana....Journey is basically a spin-off of Santana, which he and Neal were members of..they left, along with H.Herbert, Santana's road manager, and formed Journey. Actually, they were under a different name then, but changed to Journey a little later. Anyway, like Santana, Journey was originally mostly a jazz/rock non-lyrical band, but the songs that were sung, were mostly sung by Rolie. Long story, short... H.Herbert was Journey's manager and wanted there to be a legitimate front-man main-stay to help bring more success (commercialism) hence Steve Perry. Perhaps Rolie wasn't thrilled with this, but in the same turn, Rolie had nothing else to prove, and was probably ready to move on...a good excuse to leave after a harrowing few years of touring. Many people blame Perry for commercializing Journey, as if he is the reason...but in reality, if he hadn't come along, there may not be a Journey as we know it today. They were falling fast, and he was a last ditch effort to keep the music going, albeit in a different direction.
