That look on Neal's face when Jon took over the conversation is priceless.

Funny, but only half-funny: they don't listen to each other, and each is just trying to lead the conversation... I think that says a lot about the state of mind between Cain, Schon and Perry on stage too: not a healthy emulation of guys who have fun playing together, but more a competitive relationship between virtuosos who must excel at every performance to shine in the eyes of the audience, at the risk of being eaten up by the other two at the slightest failure. Although Steve Smith is also a virtuoso on his own instrument, I can't imagine him and Valory in the same competitive dynamic. It's surprising, then, that Schon and Cain have managed to collaborate for so long, even outside Journey, with Bad English... (I must, however, temper my own analysis with a few words from Steve Perry, in a 2011 interview with Andrew McNeice: _"I really do love the Journey guys and I know in their hearts they love me. Maybe we don't like each other like we once did. Or maybe we never really liked each other to start with. But that's all okay! Because you know why? Because I know deep down we love each other and when we were together, we were good. And we don't have to be together to know that. We just can know that. Right?_ _We should just know and the fans should know that I think deep down underneath the calamity and each of our own stupidity is the fact that we really do love each other. Maybe we don't like each other that much, but we do love each other._ _And whether we're together or not, what we did together proves what I just said.")_

I remember that commercial well. It's kind of interesting today seeing that they were using the Day on the Green video for it. I don't think we had any idea what concert footage was used in the commercial back then. Ron, I have a question maybe you could help answer? It was either 1981 or 1982 when I was watching a daytime TV music type program on regular network TV channels. I know this is going to sound crazy but it was something like Soul Train or something not really rock and roll. I just can't remember for sure what it might have been. But Journey came on and played Don't Stop Believin'. Steve Perry had a red tails on and it was the first time I heard them end the song with the "don't stop" ending. For the life of me I've never been able to find video of that performance anywhere. I've looked high and low and researched but never came across it anywhere. I knew that Journey was going to be performing on this show that wasn't really a show for their genre (I didn't think). So I watched it until they performed at the end of it. And it wasn't the 1986 red tuxedo used on that tour. At least it wasn't at that time. Anyway. It was definitely 1981 to maybe 1982. Any idea what show that might have been or do you possibly have a recording of it if you know what it is? I didn't even have a VCR or anything back then and I was only 14 or 15 years old. One of these days I know it'll pop up somewhere. But nobody seems to know what I'm talking about when I bring it up so I thought I'd ask you and see if you might have any idea? Brian in Fort Worth 🎶

Hi Brian. That's a head scratcher for sure. I'm starting to go through things and If I come across something like that, I'll let you know. I'm wondering if it was a live performance just for the occasion or show. Was it a local show while they were on tour? I hope to see something like that, but it doesn't ring a bell.

@@wheelinthesky4208 What I remember about it was it was on during the daytime or maybe early evening but before dark. Don't Stop Believin' was also new and I didn't really know a lot about the band yet. I'm pretty sure there were people on a dance floor dancing to, kind of like you see on old episodes of Soul Train. And journey only did one song and that's DSB. I don't even think the song had reached It's peak popularity just yet. I also remember that Steve Perry walked out on a runway type of stage that was skinny. I don't think the stage was big at all either. They definitely were doing the song live and it wasn't the music from the song playing and them acting like they were performing like on some of the 1979 Midnight Special videos. There were other acts that performed on the same stage during the program prior to Journey doing DSB. And the music was nothing like Journeys performance. I wish I could remember who some of the other acts were but from what I remember it was more dance music and maybe even a little disco sounding. It definitely didn't seem like this show would be one that Journey would be performing on. I want to say it was a late afternoon airing on whatever the program was but I can't say that with 100% certainty. I know that I never saw Steve Perry wearing a red tails again in that 1981 era on any videos. I don't think it was a local program in the Houston area and I'm pretty sure it was a network syndicated type of program that came on weekly. I just can't remember what it was because I never watched it normally. I was surprised to see that Journey was going to be on it. Hopefully one of these days it will surface and we will get the figure out what the heck it was :-) I know it was the first time I ever saw them on TV performing a song live. I didn't have MTV and it was years before I even got to see the 11/6/1981 Houston Summit MTV show. It was probably a pre-recorded performance and not actually live that was being aired? I can't say for sure but it seemed like one of those types of programs. I never really did consider that maybe it could have been local to the Houston area as far as the program goes. But it didn't seem like it was and there was a commercial that I saw mentioning Journey was going to be on the program. I don't think it even showed them on the commercial and I remember having my doubts at first that they were actually going to be on the program. It just wasn't a program for rock and roll music. But they definitely were 👍 I can't go back and proofread this right now but hopefully Google typed most everything correct.
