The Portuguese built an empire from 1420 onwards that was largely composed of trade centers dotted around the coasts of three continents. This colonial enterprise was driven by a search for African gold, Asian spices, and Christian kingdoms in the east. The curiosity and expertise of Portuguese mariners resulted in the exploration of new sea routes down the coast of West Africa, around the Cape of Good Hope and across the Indian Ocean to India and beyond. By the time Portuguese Brazil was created, it had truly become the first global, inter-continental empire. However, to achieve such a feat often claimed the loss of many lives. There are records in the History of Portugal of many ships and crew loses. Those that made the Journey back home felt fortunate. But it was because they accepted that risk that the Portuguese dominated half the world for two centuries. A reminder that in history nothing is obtained and nothing can be given without cost and sacrifice.
A Sea Odyssey 1415-1543 is a new album project by Paulo C. Rocha, based on the sea exploration and discoveries of the Portuguese, started by Prince Henry the Navigator (Infante Dom Henrique). Portugal, one of the oldest nations of Europe became a great seaborn empire from their exploits during that time.
