Here is what made JSS the perfect fit. Vocal ability, he wasnt trying to be or sound like Perry, he had tone, a stage presence but not over doing it. And he made the songs his own which sounded fresh and very, very good.
This is one of my favorite Journey songs and I have to say that Jeff did a fantastic job on the hardest catalog of songs to sing from any band. He knew his parts and his voice was in great form here. Great job.
I’ve come back and listened to this performance several times over the last couple of years and I like it more and more. Scratching my head, why in the world did Journey not retain JSS’s services. What a refreshing take on this song! What a great singer!
This is proof that Jeff Scott Soto was the right singer for Journey. The performance and the feeling JSS puts into it. In case any of you wonders, I’m a big fan...and I’m from Puerto Rico. Rock on!!!
@@raquelevangelista525 No disrespect to Arnel Pineda, who is doing a good job, but Jeff Scott Soto nails that song...and I'm not the only one who thinks JSS was a right fit for Journey.
Wow, I just discovered today that JSS had done a stint in Journey. He sounds fuckin great. He really is one of my top metal/ rock vocalist and I am really impressed and a little surprised by how well his voice fits in this "adult contemporary" style ballad. I know he still has a bunch of years left but I think it's a shame he didn't achieve more fame and recognition. It's just one of those things I guess sometimes the cards we're dealt in life aren't the best. But as as JSS goes, in interviews he seems happy and content in life. If it were me I probably would have gotten all tucked up, bitter and jaded, developed substance abuse problems and fucked my life all up...oh wait a second..i did do that😢. Anyway, rock on Mr Soto and thanks for being such an inspiration for the rest of us out there who need inspiring.
I saw it in Milwaukee along with a group of 8 others and I was the only one who knew who he was. But even so, I did not know what to expect. Journey that night was the best with Jeff, totally blown away.
Jeff was THE BEST THING to happen to Journey in many years. They ducked up when the let him go. He has one of the best voices in rock -- ever. I hung out with him for a couple years in Colorado and during the time he got the gig with Yngwie. Then he of course moved away and toured. Nicest guy, fantastic voice. So lucky to know him. Cannot wait for new album and American tour by his new band Sons of Apollo!!!!!!!
Jeffs a hell of a singer and hes proves it everytime he opens his mouth >>>Journey will never replace Steve but why should they try ,,,lets just enjoy journey !!!!!!
Audio and video from cell phones are never 100% clear, but, having said that, this wasn't too shabby. I still like how Jason Derlatka sounds on this song better.
Why didn't they keep this guy!? Jesus what a set of pipes he's got on him. Plus he's got an incredible swagger around the stage, he really knows how to work a crowd. You think these old geezers in the band were intimidated by him?
This guy saw him in Milwaukee with Journey and Def Leopard and I can tell you this guy could have kept singing. Awesome and the rest of Journey screwed up dropping him like they did.
I never saw Journey with Perry. I haven't seen them with Pineda. But I saw them 4 times with Augeri and twice with Soto. The second time with Soto was the best Journey concert I've been to. He wasn't trying to sound like Perry and Jonathan Cain didn't like that.
I was very lucky, my 1st concert ever was in 1978 right after Steve Perry joined the band and it was awesome!🤘 I saw them on every tour until after Raised On Radio, when Steve Perry took a hiatus. I never saw them live again after the way the did Steve Perry so dirty on the reunion tour in 96'. But I did like a lot of the music they did with Steve Augeri. I thought he was the closest one to recreate the Steve Perry sound, without looking like he was trying too hard. In the VH1 Behind The Music video he was referred to as "Steve Perry with a perm" which I thought was a remarkably accurate characterization. Honestly comer I had no idea until I saw this video, that there was another singer wedged between Steve Augeri and Armin Pineda. Hes obviously got a slightly different vocal style from all of the other singers, but I really like him. And I agree with your assessment that they probably should have stuck within. Maybe then I would actually have known who the guy was until 20 minutes ago!🤪 The only reason I'm even here is I saw him in a band called the Ssmons of Apollo doing a crazy awesome rendition of an old Rainbow song,"Gates Of Babylon."
HighPower762 yeah. They did Augeri dirty because they ran his voice into the ground and just dumped him. Then they dumped Soto after the tour just the same. Love the music, but that band is filled with opportunistic pricks.
I couldn't imagine listening this song and get the voice of the same person from song like I'll See The Light Tonight, On The Run Again, or Disciples of Hell..
One of my fav Journey songs. I think he sounds great. This song is also great no matter what singer is doing it. That's the thing about a great song...
Jeff is a crazy amazing singer and has a fatter sound than Perry but he's still great and maybe it was a little hard for him due to the high ranges but he still did a good job. Neil prob was so used to Steve's voice coming out of those monitors that he just had to have Steve 2.0. Arnel is good but a little too forceful, imo. Soto actually has a deeper range than Perry so he has to push harder to get those really high notes but what he did with Malmsteen was amazing.
Neil Schon screwed this up, he's been stating for many, many years that Journey is "his" band and he'll nake the hard, final decisions accordingly. Maybe Jeff was too strong or didn't cow down to Schon the Supreme, so he had to go. The dude has some serious pipes and is an extremely versatile talented vocalist without a doubt.
Dave Clark I’ve always felt Neal chose to let Jeff go because he looked tiny next to him. Napoleonic complex can get the best of even the biggest of rock stars.
I love this song & yes Jeff dont sound like Steve but thats what made him good. He wasnt trying to copy Steve Perry, He didnt need to lip sync. I cant see myself going to see Journey without Steve Perry.
True JSS did not want to impersonate Steve Perry. He loves him and looks up to him. That is why Journey dumped him. They wanted a complete mimic..JSS sings in lower octaves and is dramatic in a good way. They might have actually been able to sell some NEW material with him because unlike Arnel and Augeri...he is a true and creative mucician and artist ... and not a karaoke mimic....kind of like the way Sammy Hagar came into Van Halen without disrespecting what had already been DONE by David Lee Roth...yes in concerts he did some of the old favorites (in his own voice and style) but did not re-record Roth's hits or recycle nothing but Roth's hits with the band....he created A LOT of credible selling music of his own with them.....Hagar and Roth were actually able to go on a tour together without Van Halen after they were both out with no hard feelings....and nobody did this comparison b#llsh*t with the 2 of them because they both are unique solid artists who stand on their own. With all the bad blood back then between Roth and Van Halen brothers....they did not sell out the PERSONA of their band brother, like Schon, Caine and Valory did...tackiest move in music history and they have lost respect of their peers in the music industry over it....Journey chose the easy route straight for the Asian market. But I agree with you. I don't want to hear these songs out of anybody's face but Perry's....
Wish Flower I could actually feel the emotion when JSS sings. There's a difference between singing powerfully and hitting the high notes and singing with one's heart out ~
He replaced Augeri when he couldn't go on because of health problems but in the end they chose Arnel Pineda... I think they were looking for a voice closer to Perry's :/
To this day it's an odd situation. Journey announced on their website that Jeff was the new singer for Journey, then a few days later let Jeff go! Management is stuck on the ghost of Steve Perry and wanted someone more identical sounding to Steve! Jeff is awesome!
@@SEbdeViaje Augeri was outed as a fake live singer when a fan discovered that mobile studio out the back of every gig . Nothing to do with his health , that's just the PR story
I love this. The instrumental music and background vocals are exemplary. JSS is an incredible talent with or without Journey. He was as good as it was gonna get! I can understand if the chemistry wasn't right offstage perhaps, sometimes it just doesn't 'gel' with someone, especially when it comes to writing
tragic to see such a great band, with such fine songs. a long history and great musicians keeping it up with no chemistry for each other any more... just a day at the factory
Soto is just perfect for this band!! What happened??? He is hitting those notes like he owns them! Schon made the wrong decision to not keep this great wonderful singer! That is perfection in a magical form like no other!!! WOW wow & wow!!!-
Man it is such a shame he got the boot. JSS is such a great singer and I think a great fit for them and did a fantastic job. It's kind of upsetting when people can't get over that he's not Steve Perry. I love SP the most in Journey and on this song...but come on JSS gots a great powerful voice that's needs to be recognized.
Although Steve Perry is my favorite singer ever, I have to give it to Jeff, it's not easy at all singing Perry, and he did a great job! Love the song too!
Ni body can sing like Mr perry anymore no better done like Mr perry I'm sorry guys Mr perry still the one the golden voice ever legendary man Still Soo smooth sweet sounds already Mr perry still the oreginality are the best
In my opinion, from what I heard in an interview with Jeff years ago, they didn't get along because Jeff was going into his forties with a party attitude, and all the older guys in Journey wanted to soak their feet and go to bed early after a show because sixty was around the corner. I'm joking. Different people. Different times. And yes, I'm a Puerto Rican Soto, from Brooklyn, who is a cousin of his, but I barely know him other than a few emails and a quick phone call with him when his dad "Red" called my mother from backstage at a concert in Orlando decades ago. Jeff's mom spirited him away from the Soto enclave in Brooklyn and ran far away from that side of the family (I met his dad, his/my cousins, et al, but never had any connection from that branch of the family even though we live in the same gigantic town called "Brooklyn"; though I brag about Jeff just because we share genetic material...who wouldn't?). I was thrilled when Jeff was chosen to be in Journey, and when the "firing" happened, I knew, just knew it had to be Jeff's doing (men in our family shoot themselves in the foot for the love of it); not that Jeff doesn't have a freaking amazing life. He has it made. Lucky, lucky man. Very talented, and Journey made a mistake when they fired him. Pineda is great too, and absolutely their pet. Which if I were in his shoes, I'd probably be the same...the money's big, right? Oh well.
I like your outlook Mr. Soto. It's got to be difficult to be in a position like your cousin. I mean, everything that comes with fame and how one has to deal with it.For whatever its worth, out of everyone Journey tried out, I believe they should have stuck with Jeff or at least gave it a little more time. Primarily because he didn't sound like SP, didn't try to sound like SP, but still had a good hook with his approach. And he could have taken them in a different direction with potentially more hits.Trust me brother, I grew up with Journey since the Infinity album. I'm a HUGE SP fan. But your cousin took the best position not trying to sound like SP and I loved it. Arnel is the best karaoke of SP and a lot of others. Sting, Peter Cetera, etc. But I don't believe he has any original hits of his own?
Jeff was straining his voice a bit with some of those notes. I didn't really know him when he was in Brooklyn as a young boy, but as a kid of about 14, I'd heard his demo (which floated around a Puerto Rican family that didn't like metal) and he had such a great voice at the tender age of 16. All he did was sing and develop his gift. That's the way to do it. With Journey, it was a HUGE opportunity. I don't know the facts, I just know the speculation some family members say is the truth--Journey and Jeff just didn't get along--butting heads creatively and otherwise (they were all grandpas in Journey, and Jeff was still partying and having a good time). I think he kicks himself a bit for losing that opportunity, but Jeff is still travelling the world at fifty (plus), and he's having the time of his life. He's the most famous member of my family, though some say we're also related to Talisa Soto (model, actress whose real name is Miriam). Jeff is big into family reunions, and when he's in the City, he gathers cousins and his half-siblings (I begged off of these reunions because I don't get along with that branch of my family). His mom took him from Brooklyn because the Soto men (his father's nickname was "Red"), are well, um, prolific at chasing women--and the permutations that come from that. Jeff is a lucky dude. I hope one day to have him meet my kids and wife; and have our own reunion. Eventually I want to reconnect with certain family members; Jeff is near the top of that list.
JJ Soto thanks for sharing your family stories. Three big name Flamenco singers from Jerez Spain are Sotos (Jose Merce, Manuel Soto “Sordera”, and Vicente Soto). Jeff is one of the scariest singers of all time. I have to laugh when I see journey fans compare him to Perry or any other singer from journey honestly. He is a total pro the way he pulls off this gig. None of the other singers could pull off I’ll see the light tonight etc, the guy is ridiculous. He covered graham Bonet and mark boals w Yngwie, I mean I try to imagine steve Perry and Yngwie hahaha!
I like Arnel but I think Jeff Scott Soto could've been their best replacement, This was as close to perry as they could get. Jeff Scott Soto you're an amazing musician, Puerto Rican Journey fans are proud of you
Steve Perry himself thinks the same, he even said in an interview that Journey made a mistake kicking out JSS, that he was the perfect fit for Journey,.
I have loved Steve Perry and Journey since first seeing them in a live concert on television back in the 70s when Steve had just joined. Not sure if it was on Don Kirschner's Rock Concert or the Midnight Special or maybe even PBS. Been a minute. Loved them ever since and at one point owned everything Journey had ever released, even back to their pre-Steve Perry prog-rock days when Gregg Rollie was their keyboardist and lead singer as well. But when Steve Perry left the fold for good I struggled with the idea of a Steve Perry-less Journey. Most long-time fans have struggled with the uncertainty, not just me. Was not Steve Augeri's biggest fan although I liked the non-Steve Perry-penned songs he sang. But he was not Steve. Really, who else could be. I begrudgingly gave Arnel a fair listen on their live from Manila video. He did a pretty spot-on Steve Perry albeit with a slight accent. I had heard rumors that Jeff Scott Soto had stepped into Steve Perry's shoes. Loved Jeff when he sang with Yngwie Malmsteen. Had not heard him with Journey. Jeff has a great voice and I love how he sings this song, but it was immediately apparent they had to bring the song down a few steps into JSS's far more baritone vocal range than the high tenor range favored by Steve Perry. This is a great version of the song. Love Jeff's vocals and great stage presence but Journey songs are known for vocally heading into the upper stratosphere register-wise and this? Definitely did not go there. At least Arnel gets up into Perry's upper tenor registers. Jeff might have been a good fit as far as stage presence but he would continue to alter the classic Journey sound, just because his voice is noticeably deeper than Steve Perry's. That would be both good and less awesome. JSS does not try to sound like Steve Perry. Kudos for that. Can't be Steve so just had to be himself. But bringing Jeff aboard permanently would require alternate tuning on every Journey song and it would be a little weird never hearing another soaring falsetto Journey song ever again. Just my two cents.
I saw him on this tour, 2 shows. He absolutely crushed it!! Way better than Augeri and way better than Arnel. AND he's still singing like this all these years later in the same register. If they would have kept him they could have still done the old material but they could have written new material that people would actually be interested in lestening to. Oh, what could have been. Those guys are absolutely crazy for letting him go.
It’s interesting to see Ross Valory playing a song from the only Journey album from which he is absent. Of course he plays Randy Jackson’s bass line with all the finesse it deserves.
In my opinion Jeff Scott Soto was the best replacement that Journey could have. He sings the songs in his own style and not trying to copy Steve Perry.
@@jeffelijahelias785 Journey released some live footage in Japan not too long ago and I thought Arnel sounded great! But on the R&R Hall of Fame, he was terrible! Thinking maybe Journey burns out all their singer. Steve Augeri - same thing!
I think Jeff Scott Soto did a great job !. I think it might have been a personal issue. Like somebody was thinking they're getting up staged by the lead singer .
I'm absolutely convinced without a doubt that Neal Schon's ego was the main reason for letting go the Best Singer and Performer Jeff Scott Soto..specially when we all know Steve Perry and Neal had clashes about who was in charge of the Band. Jeff was too much of a good thing.. a seasoned veteran in the Music industry who could have contributed with new Journey music..but Neal's Ego got on the way
Had they stuck with Soto and recorded new material, they would have been back on the map. He was GREAT! Can't believe they ousted him and took on Pineda.
He doesn't fit with journey, and he only last for 9 months cause journey received a bad reviews with jss. He can't connect connect with the audience! It looks boring. I still love Steve Perry and arnel pineda.
Great job Beautiful He does a great job I don't know why they didn't keep him they didn't need to look very far they had a great singer right here with Jeff Scott Soto I'm sure that maybe they didn't like him because he sounded really good Jonathan Cain and our boy Neal it just seems that they need a hotel to fall on them when they have somebody right there that is fantastic and where do we go to the Philippines
