The '80s were a tough time for KC & the Sunshine Band. In the '70s they had ruled the airwaves and dance clubs, scoring six Top 10 hits and selling millions of records. But with the dawn of a new decade, tastes were shifting away from disco. To make matters worse, in 1981 bandleader Harry "KC" Wayne Casey was involved in a head-on collision that left him partially paralyzed and unable to walk, dance, or play piano for months. Harry Wayne Casey and his band's story might have ended there if not for the helping hand of Journey's Steve Perry, who shared Casey's affinity for excruciatingly tight pants.
Perry met with Journey's Neal Schon about a possible collaboration with Casey. The guitarist, also a fan of overly tight high-waisted jeans, immediately signed on. "Give It Up Stop Believin'" was released on May 9, 1982, and rocketed to the top of Billboard's Hot 100 chart, where it sat for an amazing 10 weeks.
