I think on that night in Houston in 1981, Journey was absolutely the best f*ing rock band in the world. Steve was beyond amazing and effortless, and Neil was/is a blazing melodist almost without equal. The whole band is just on fire. You don't even have to be a fan to see that. Incredible time for music.

That they were. But these and other 80s clips are bittersweet, smh to think just a short 6 years later the Perry era just...ended (for all the reasons we know now). Greatly respect phase two, and all the great talent that it brought, esp Arnel. But this right here, this was the height.

I read somewhere that Steve Perry was on the track team when he was in school - junior high or high school, something like that. Anyway, I wonder if that taught him about breathing techniques and breath control. Either that, or he's superhuman to be able to run around the stage, hold those notes, and stay on pitch. AMAZING!!!

I came upon this video some time ago and decided to sit down a learn this on guitar ( I'm 63. I grew up playing guitar on this era of Journey). This is a great shuffle groove. The intro itself takes some practice just to get the rhythm of the individual notes. It's a great mix of blues, syncopation, pick dynamics, and timing. Terrible fun to play once you get it down

@@scottoneal2031 I like Neal and Alex both. I wouldn't think you could really compare the two, but if I did, I would say Alex is more progressive rock than Neal is. At least, Neal's paychecks haven't really come from progressive rock as much as other styles. LOL
@kriscarter1389
@kriscarter1389 4 года назад
Alex Lifeson is probably my biggest influence, but he and Neal do have way different styles. Both have a blues-driven base, but Alex moved into more of a textural space in the 80s as he picked up influence from Andy Summers and The Edge. Through the mid and late 70s he was in a very progressive metal area, mostly Jimmy Page with touches of Steve Hackett. Meanwhile Neal has a lot of blues, jazz and Latin influences, and seemed to stay primarily in those areas.

Ist concert I ever went to of Journey-Billy Squire opened for them-A day at the beach, and a night of unbelievable music-To this day I am still blown away by what I witnessed with my friend that beautiful night in Ventura, CA-After the 1980 Departure Tour, Keyboardist and Vocalist Gregg Rolie decided to leave the band. Jonathan Cain, the keyboardist for the band, "The Baby's", joined the band and they set out on the Pre-Escape Tour. California was the first place the band played to an audience with the new line-up. I saw the band for the first time on June 7, 1981 at the Ventura County Fairgrounds in Ventura, California. They played 5 songs from the unreleased "Escape" Album! The Escape Tour really kicked off in Osaka, Japan on July 27, 1981 at Festival Hall. The 1981 Escape Tour ended on December 22, 1981 in Honolulu, Hawaii at the Blaisdell Arena. Here is the playlist from that night- Where Were You Line of Fire Stone in Love Keep on Runnin' Lay It Down Who's Crying Now Dead or Alive Lights Stay Awhile Too Late Dixie Highway Lovin' You Is Easy La Do Da The Party's Over (Hopelessly in Love) Wheel in the Sky Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin' Any Way You Want It
