I'm a 68 year old grandma now, but the 29 year old me is still in love with this 31 year old Steve Perry....Ahh...but that was another life. Listening to him still makes my day and I think, gosh, I'd love to make him dinner. (that's the 68 year old me).
I too am 68 ... I was in an Attack Squadron based out of NAS Lemoore, CA ... I believe it was '88/89 ... we held a squadron function at Rubi Calva's a restaurant just outside Hanford, CA ... When we arrived, I was astounded to see a person sitting at the bar who looked exactly like Steve Perry. Long story short ... it was him ... he bought us a round. We invited him in ... he graciously refused. He is a saint! He had returned to his home to look after his Mother ... a native Lemoore-on. Steve ... I was once asked if I would be caught dead listening to Journey while driving my Corvette? Hell yea! Journey rules! Biden can suck it!
No freaking autotune, vocal rings like a bell, musically they were so together, great live mixes.... wired mics, discipline. The best live shows. So glad for RU-vid.
Steve’s the only singer I’ve seen sound just as good if not better live !!!! As on tape or cd !!!! The Voice ! Journey with Steve are one of the best bands ever ! The music, the lyrics with the greatest vocals in Steve ! Truly amazing!!!
Agreed for Rock. Lou Gramm, John Farnham as far as being able to belt It out. But this list is enormous if you include other categories. I'm old but I consider Tony Bennet the greatest male singer of all time with Andy Williams right behind him.
I agree 100 percent , Perry’s voice absolutely soars! I’d put Steve Perry in a category with a prime Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury, Paul Rodgers, and a few others. It seems unlike many others he took care of his voice, didn’t smoke or use drugs. His live performances were very consistent.
@@bradsquires5971 Spot on except for the drugs part. Back in the 70's and 80's. the boys in the band were fond of their blow until the studio they were using was raided by the police back in the 80's. None of the band members were in the studio at the time of the raid, but they were recording an album there. You are correct, however. Perry did take good care of his voice and used drugs the least.

Neal Schon proves undeniably what a phenomenal guitar player he really is here. One of Journey's greatest unpopular songs ever written. Steve sounds amazing as per usual and Neal tears up that six string!!!
@@chaseharlann For both the '81 Escape tour and follow up Frontiers tour in '83 - saw them at the L.A. Forum. The '81 show was late November, and I don't remember when the '83 was... I want to say late Spring or early Summer. Loverboy opened the '81 show. Bryan Adams, the '83 show. Both put on a great show.

That crowd was amazing, as were Journey. Thanks for putting up all these shows. Wow, gotta go listen to those Aug 83 shows....
Steve is one of the greatest voice's in Rock, Neal S. is EXTREMELY under rated, doing pretty well for a high school drop out. One of the greatest rock bands ever. All members are great musicians in their own right.
Back in the 80s when all of these Metal Head guitarists were getting involved in Metal Aid they gathered together guys like George Lynch from Dokken and some of those other so-called "rock guitarists trading riffs. When Neil Schon stepped up all of their jaws dropped as he proceeded to shred and annihilate every one of them with his incredible runs and churning riffs. He blew every one of them away like you wouldn't believe. He is truly one of the very top guitarists and I would not say he's underrated except maybe by people who just don't know!
Who underrated Neal? He’s a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Don’t you think he’s quite highly rated since he was voted in with the rest of the members of Journey? You must be an idiot.

I agree..he is a great bass player..and wrote several.of the songs on the first album. Google the Winterland videos and watch/listen to him on the one called "unnamed instrumental"..it is actually one of their early unreleased songs called charge of the light brigade. Valory, Schon, and Dunbar (before Steve Smith) are incredible. Schon is in the stratosphere on it. Dunbar was every bit the drummer that Smith is. But I agree, Valory does not get the credit he deserves.
So were the Eagles,,,,,how fortunate we were to grow up with the most diverse, in terms of genre, and profoundly inspired musicians & vocalists who wrote and sang their own songs which we still enjoy 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and even 60 year later! Blessed, that's how I feel!
That's when Journey was Journey. They were no.1 around the country. Neil was.amazing. Steve on drums was awesome. They called the animal. Of course Steve was rocking the stage. I Loved watching him. He can't be touched EVER!!!!
Have you noticed how Neal looks over at Steve a lot and vice versa, I don't care what anybody says they have real chemistry together, it's so evident in their singing, playing and body language. Steve and Neal will go down in history as 2 of the greatest in rock history!!!
Steve's voice is AMAZING, PHENOMENAL, ONE-OF-A-KIND, and BEAUTIFUL, and Neal is CRAZY on the guitar. But let's not overlook Steve Smith KILLIN' it on the drums, and Ross cuttin' up on the bass!!! These boys are MAGIC!
It was a wonderful time....you felt everything this man sung, deep to your soul. So many good tunes... Rubicon, Sweet and simple, Mother-father, winds of March, city of the angels.....so on and so on.
Same. One of the biggest regrets in my life. I saw Journey with Steve Augeri and it was meh… It put me in a foul mood because it wasn’t Steve Perry and it lacked his magic.
Still miss this magic that Steve, Neal, Jonathan, Ross and Steve Smith had... Truly my favorite song by the legendary band. Neal's riff in the middle is just pure electric. Steve's voice never wavers... Again. It was truly magic... Reconcile guys so that is true Journey fans can get a chance to see y'all rock once more- for old times sakes...

Never stated he hasn’t given everything he’s got. Just for those of us who were too young to see them live t would be a dream for one reunion tour. That isn’t too much to ask for.
You know Neal Schon does not get the recognition he deserves as one of rocks greatest guitar players ever. He is up there with Carlos Santana, Jimmy Hendrix etc. Steve Perry we miss and still think you have the best voice in rock history. It's amazing how this band and this performance era is so riveting, without big video screens, lasers, samples, or sequencers. Their sheer live performance brilliance still mesmerizes me.
Herbie Herbert, Journey's manager, actually invented the big screen located behind them, so that everyone in the venue were able to see them. After that, other bands stole the idea. It's not a bad idea, though.
Hopelessly in love with Steve Perry when I was 35 and still in love at 75. Ooh he is just the right age at any age. Totally fantastic and wonderful, absolutely the BEST, Forever and ever.

That's the part that is most impressive. These guys played in an era where there was no auto-tune or background track. What you hear is 5 really great musicians at the top of their game.
I had a friend who could shred flamenco guitar and also hard rock and metal, and Neal was his favorite rock guitarist - he said Neal can play anything.
Neal Schon's catalog of amazingly complex guitar riffage that are structured for hits songs is amazings. Journey and Van Halen in this era were untouchable live in concert. ❤😊
I am a EVH fan for sure, but as I've gotten older I've found many EVH solos just didn't make sense, they just didn't work with the songs. They were him just ripping. A prime example is the end of Summer Nights. I love the song, but the solo is just all over the place. NS on the other hand, his solos and riffs throughout the songs fit and flow perfectly.
Definitely one of my favorite Journey songs especially being a professional acoustic drummer for many moons I love playing drums to this and the guitar is incredible as well as obviously Steve Perry
I agree...I LOVE how Schon shakes his head NO to let Perry know that him and Steve Smith are not done yet. Both are virtuoso and improvising on the fly. It is obvious they love to play with each other.

Look how stunningly easy it is here for Steve in 1981. Top of his game here, with even more higher success about to come their way. Great times then. Real musicians. Consumate pros. These times and these bands have never been reproduced, nor will they ever be again...

@@sedricrobinson9499 I never got why the girls were gaga for EVH. I always found him to be immature and goofy and a bit of a one trick pony. The men in Journey have always acted like grown men. And NS creates whole moods with each song. As evidenced in this song.....NS's guitar is so happy, uplifting and hopeful.
Iove singing this with my friends cover band. anything Steve sang. He belted it out. Being 52 years old. I can still hit high notes. I always had a high voice. went down just aittle because I'm older. Steve Perry has always Been singing my favorite singer. His voice got Journey inducted the Rock and roll hall of fame. Should have been Inducted 7 years ago instead of this year in 2017 Journey is my favorite group
The intro drum parts to this song keep Steve pretty busy and they are playing this song quite a bit faster than it was recorded and Steve Smith does not miss a beat and makes it look easy-as he always did.

@@jasperjenkins7729 Yes, Steve Smith is to drum world, that Neal is to the Guitar world. Smith is a world class drummer, and it is obvious Schon loves to Jam and improvise on the fly with him like they did on this song. I love how Neal shakes his head "NO" to his band mates (i.e. Perry not to cut in with vocals) to let them know him and Smith are not finished! You can see Ross Valory laughing at the end due to the "tug of war" between Schon and Perry. I do like Perry, but I saw Herbie Herbert say that Neal always wanted to rock and Perry always wanted to croon! I personally love the pre-Perry stuff, like most of the Perry stuff, but I can't stand when people act like Journey couldn't do anything without Perry.. well that goes both ways..he was shoveling chicken shit (literally) before Journey, and he has not done anything memorable since leaving either! It was a band, and he was singing with world class musicians behind him, and writing most of the music...not lyrics, but the music.

This was a legitimate super group ! All high level players and Perry had such a recognizable voice ! From the first note you knew it was him ! They were in their prime here ! 60's, 70's and, 80's bands and singers especially, had their own signature sound ! Today eveyone sounds the same ! With very few exceptions !
AMEN! And the last time "Rolling Stone" magazine did a "100 Greatest Voices" edition, Steve Perry was Number 76 or 79! 76 or 79!!! I would put him at Number 1, but at least they could have put him in the top 5 or10! No lower than Number 10! Come on, folks! Has the world gone mad??!! (Oh, yeah. This is 2020. So I guess it HAS gone mad. :/
@@CherylHShannon He sure is, he's old, doesn't even come close to having the voice he had here and the album is b-o-r-i-n-g. Yet, the band Journey is still playing packed houses. It's over for Steve and has been for a long time. That's the honest truth.
