Lotta comments on here, but in the end, it isn't even a question of who was better, Perry or Fleishman. This is a piece of rock n roll history. I'm grateful to the person who filmed and to the person who posted this so we can all see this awesome snapshot in the history of a great band! And btw the album NEXT was a GREAT GREAT record!
Agreed1 But, I must admit, I seen them in 78' at the Concord Pavillion right after Infinty came out and THAT was the shit. They were at their best, on fire. Like this, they played a few tunes without Perry, but they rocked even better when he joined them. That was the best lineup, no ifs, ands or butts.
@@brianpoole3484 Yeah I saw them on that tour after Van Halen opened for them in LaCrosse, WI . Small crowd got them back out 4 encores. Still top 3 all time concerts ever for me.
First three Journey albums were solid jam rock and roll. "Of a Lifetime" is my favorite track. Then they went commercial. Sad that Schon could have been a guitar god up there with Clapton, Beck, Page, & Hendrix, but he wanted more $. He got a new singer, and the fans changed from mostly guys to mostly swooning girls. Still great guitarist, but limited by commercial parameters.
Be glad it's out here and someone recorded it. Probably Herbie Herbert to get a better idea of the sound and performance later on. It's rock n roll history. Not a lot of Journey videos out from 1977 on back and the few tid bits I've seen the quality is much worse. Peace
WOAH! SWEET! Neal Schon shreddin! This is some gold right here! I love Journey but I think I would have loved them better if they had stayed a guitar band. Millions of others wouldn't though.
+David MacCannell They never would've got the air play. When Perry came they were on the radio and making big bucks. And that is musical history. The guys were'nt happy at first because they were complaining Perry was crunning. Well, look happened, Journey is one of the biggest bands of all time and better live, that was with Perry only.
@@nextwave1314 You were happy with Pop Rock, Na Na's and La La's which is fine, for us we want the incredible instrumentation and haunting vocals of Rolie. So for us yes it became bad, a pale fake representation of their musical ability and why the vast majority of "players" left the band.
This was an amazing day and an amazing concert. Ha, ha, ha. I remember the guy in the red jumpsuit but I thought the lei was a scarf at the time. I've seen some great concerts and bigger acts but this is one of the best concerts I've ever attended.
Fleischmann is moving at a different tempo than the rest of the band and it looks silly. He's too metal rock for Journey. I'm glad they got Steve Perry, that was the better singer for this band.
Ram4 He partially contributed a couple of great songs. I saw him perform w/Journey. I think it was his last gig. I went to the concert with a fairly large group of friends/musicians and none of us dug his voice for Journey. Even people around us didn't dig his voice with Journey. His voice just sounded too much like a cliche' rock singer. He just didn't mesh with the band.
Mark Phelps He didn't get writing credit for Wheel's in the Sky, but it was his version that was a hit and it was largely due to his voice. Winds of March, he was credited as a partial song writing credit. But if you look at the Journey Greatest Hits album that has sold over 15 million copies and still sells over 500,000 copies a year, he wrote or co-wrote the majority of the songs and he was a major contributor for song writing during his tenure with Journey and it was definitely his voice that helped Journey have all of their hits and sound. I'm speaking of Steve Perry.
Neal did not bring in Steve Perry to the band. The real story is this ..... Their 1st three albums were not selling, although the band did have a huge following in the California and Bay area(s). The record company wanted sales and insisted that they hire a true lead singer/frontman. They hired Robert Fleishman. Yet although he co- wrote what have become a few classic songs of JRNY's, the chemistry just wasn't there. At this same period ... Steve had left his last band 'ALIEN PROJECT' , after the death of their bassist and good friend of Steve's. They had also been about to sign with Columbia Records. Columbia put pressure on JRNY manager , Herbie Herbert to replace R.F. with S.P. - The whole band was originally against this. Yet, they did indeed bring Steve along on their next tour as Neal's cousin. Herbert took R.F. out for a so-called lunch meeting, while the rest of the band did a closed doors session with S.P., after which time, 'THE VOICE' was hired. Besides the gun that had been put to the head of them by Columbia and Herbert for them to hire S.P., it was not until Neal and Steve wrote 'Patiently', that Neal became convinced that JRNY could make it with S.P. as there vocalist/frontman. The rest is, as they say .... HISTORY. A great history, but a shame for Robert Fleischman. So do not blame Neal. If you don't like JRNY and what the did/have done since their 1st three albums ...... Blame Columbia Records and Herbert. Yet, they did become one of America's and the worlds biggest bands ever with Perry on vocals,(they were voted ~5 as the U.S,A's greatest and most popular bands in a Nationwide poll). As Jon Bon Jovi calls S.P. ...... He is 'THE VOICE'. And most industry insiders, fellow musicians, pundits, etc. state that it is between him and Robert Plant as to who is the 'GREATEST' rock vocalist of all-time. Steve Perry is my favourite of all-time. Yet, I do feel for Robert Fleischman .... A great singer/vocalist in his own right. Lastly, remember ..... the direction of R'N'R and the way record companies treated bands was drastically changing during the years that JRNY were truly finding themselves, permanent line-up, and sound. Journey On Forever ..... And be thankful to every member, no longer how long they were with the band for helping to shape this amazing group. Peace & Cheers !!!!!
LAIRDMICK COOPER excellent brief history, with some errors: he was said to be John Villanueva's Portuguese cousin and Herbie kept Rob busy during the sound check. The whole crew...everyone came out to hear Steve as he started to sing and gave him a resounding round of applause. Again...thanks for the history! A well-thought out reply Cooper. well done! Don't blame Neal but Herbie if someone doesn't like the 1977-1997 of Journey BUT Journey is one of THE most versatile groups around and so was their premiere frontman, the voice Steve Perry.
RF refused to use the same management and attorneys as Journey. He insisted on having separate managers and attorneys from the band. That's why they replaced him with SP.
"ROBERT FLEISHMAN" NEW BAND "SKY" IS ABSOLUTELY KILLER. THIS GUY IS PURE TALENT-NO KIDDING FOLKS!!! ONE WORD TO DESCRIBE "ROBERT FLEISHMAN" IS MAGIC MAN. Hey rob if you read this sorry for calling you a beast of burden for Schon. PEACE.
I liked Greg's voice for Anytime more than I did Fleischman's. Fleischman wasn't the right guy for Journey. I saw him sing with Journey on his last gig with them and he just didn't match up well.. I remember a bunch of fans were in the audience asking each other who the F this guy was and that he doesn't belong. enter Steve Perry a months later with the Infinity album. great album. One of Journey's best during the Steve Perry era.
Journey should release the "Diamond Head Crater Music Festival" 1977 Concert on a single CD. That is something I would love to see Journey released, because I am a huge fan of Robert Fleschiman, especially his voice. Who's with me on the 1977 Diamond Head Crater Music Festival CD from Journey?
@@sticksbass They were all in the original version of Santana the band. That’s what I’m talking about. In the early days “Santana” was just the name of the band. Later on, after all the original members left, was when it became more of a solo vehicle for Carlos Santana. Actually though, to be more accurate, Neal didn’t join the band until after the first album and stayed in it until he and Greg left to start Journey. Good times.😉👍
I was at the Sunshine Festival in Diamond Head Crater, Hawaii. I still have my original program magazine. Concerts ,July 3 began at 8am with opening ceremony by Reverend Akaha, then Seabird Spring, Yellow Rose band, Flash Cadillac, the Mackey Feary band, STYX played(3:30pm) just prior to JOURNEY(5:15). Great performances! Had no idea then what big bands, Styx and Journey would become...Just enjoyed a day of peace, love, and music !! An unforgettable detail was the drums were awesome paint job with Planets, stars, comets painted on bluish background not evident because of no HD) I also attended on Monday July4 to see Elvin Bishop with Mickey Thomas and Detective. (Detective wow incredible performance nowhere to be found in later years till my recent You tube discovery.
I was there, too! I was in a band that played on the "Locals" stage even though we were from Southern California and touring Hawaii from May through July. It was a spectacular day I'll never forget. Too much fun.
@@biffDipstick what was name of your band - I still have the premier issue of the ninth annual sunshine festival...it displays the music lineup and schedule. Yes, fond memories!
I saw the show and watched them open up for Emerson Lake and Palmer what a one-two punch that was especially getting to see Carl Palmer and Ansley Dunbar on the same stage😮
A lot of people think Karma is a Bitch, yet I'm about to prove otherwise. 1973, my family Co-owned AML Music Studios, Keystone Palo Alto-Berkley-SF, Operating as Hardin Music LLC out of San Mateo (Belmont actually) Ca. I was 12 the first time I met Gregg Rolley at Keystone Palo Alto, where I had my drums set up during dark nights during the week so I could practice to all my favorite local bands. Don't need to mention "The Golden Gate Rhythm Section" being my favorite..I followed Perry Prince-Ainsley Dunbar like flies on bubble gum! Gregg heard me playing to People, Khoutek, and Nickel & Dime. Though impressed, that's the last I would see of Gregg, Herbie, Neal, Ross, George, Robert, and Kelly (Mouse). If I were 5 years older, Deeno would be Geno…no question. I think if anyone can hit Perry's range without losing a lung while playing a 11 piece kit like Ainsleys..It's me. I sang every song written by TGGB and Journey on tapes, R2R's, 8Tracks, and Even CD that several "Cover Band Managers heard and begged me to join their Journey Tribute Bands". I couldn't do it. It felt disrespectful. My gift in return from Karma: "I was at this concert in Oahu at Diamond Head. Met an amazing talented keyboard player "Anakalia Han McGurn", and we became very close long distance collaborators playing/writing nothing but Journey songs. I have about 140 tracks we hoped one day would reach Neal and Steve then JC, but neither had the courage to send to Pat at Nightmare. 1982 we married and had a son in 2004. During that 22 year span we followed Journey every year to every show we could afford and still keep our jobs in remote IS/IT Deck Systems Management for a Publishing/Broadcasting Network I'm Bound Not to Mention. My wife was born in Oahu July 4th 1962, Met her July 4th 1977 in Oahu at this concert, My/Our life was everything Journey for 51 years. My wife passed away 11/16/16 and rests at "Diamond Head Memorial Honolulu HI. That's KARMA! Some things are meant to be!
@@waynehardingeno8086 Thanks, I've driven on Middlefield Rd many times , but I don't remember Moreno Ave. During the 70's , I lived in both Belmont and Los Altos, playing bass in fusion bands and Top 40 up and down the Bay Area, and on the road around the states through a top booking agent to keep money coming in. Bands I played with did a bunch of Journey covers (slipped in between all the disco dance stuff you were expected to play ). Where was Harlins Music LLC in Belmont. I'm guessing it was around the El Camino / Ralston Ave area ? I got to meet the guys in Journey twice, the first time was were they were rehearsing in San Francisco. My guitarist friend was taking a class with Gregg Rolie's girlfriend at the time, named Maureen, and she got permission to invite our band to drive up to the city to meet them....plus my guitar player friend had an old Gibson SG Firebird that Neil was interested in seeing. The 2nd time I saw them was when they were doing an album promotion for " NEXT" at a record store in the south bay, and signing the Albums. I still have mine framed. I'd be interested in hearing you play. Any vids on You Tube of your material ?
Although Steve Perry has a better voice and sang with much more feel and finesse which that Journey the distinct sound that catapulted them into greatness. Robert Fleisher sings his ass off and this is not a fair example of his talent. Check out some of his other work, he's a very talented man. His stage presence does suck on this I must say. Example: Vinnie Vincent album
This video is quite a find as pre-Perry footage is rare. Fleischman is pretty good. He seemed to overdo it during the first two songs. I would chalk that up to nerves though. After that, he calmed down a bit, and the results were much better. It's interesting that there are elements of Perry's and Rolie's voices in Robert's voice. I can see why they hired him. Before his hiring, Journey was more or less a faceless band which is okay for studio work but not so much for live performances.
Can I "LOVE" instead of "LIKE' this? I really like a lot of the material off the first 3 albums....I went on a binge listen to them last month. Not to be dismissed. I really liked the 1978 tour that was a combination of that material and the trading off of newer Rolie/Perry vocals that would propel the band to new heights. This 1977 video is a solid document of a little known chapter of the band.
Fleishman sang on the Vinnie Vincent Invasion album and other than the over the top guitar solos it is a great record. Some of the best high octave vocals ever!
Ya gotta love critics.............Robert's was a fine tenure to the band......the band was in its infancy...........get through the sound quality of this OUTDOOR concert and take note of his vocal timing and push....the vocal coaches have the right definitions for this.....Neil was on Santana's live album from the islands too....check it out...Buddy Miles on the kit on that one...
ANYWAY FOLKS GO LISTEN TO 1st VINNIE VINCENT INVASION (ALBUM) WITH "ROBERT". I GIVE THIS ALBUM A 10/10. Hey anyone into IMMORTAL, VADER or DIMMU BORGIR? HAPPY BIRTHDAY ELVIS- RIP KING! PEACE TO ALL!!!!!!
When Herbie Herbert introduced Steve Perry to the band, he introduce Steve Perry as Jacque Villenueve's cousin and ask him to do a track with band, while Robert Fleischman was away from the stage, he told the band that Steve Perry was their new lead singer. During Robert Fleischman's tenure w/ Journey, he refused to be under contract with the band, choosing to have his own contract with the record company. This created internal strife between the band and him.
Loving Ross, Gregg, Neal and Dunbar. Ross is kicking on the bass and the band is kicking tail and taking no prisoners. But like Neal said music is for the people (the masses and NOT for a select few) and if he could get the people high off his playing than that's his high. and Rob can SING!!! But not good for Journey in the long run. but he can SING but he can't blow or torch a song.
I just had a thought...interesting that Steve SLOWLY took over the vocals but here Rob was GIVEN full lead vocals on this song when Steve only did co and backing for Rolie! And yet Rolie would later say in 2014 interview: "I don't think Steve wanted me singing as much." Statements that make you go hmm.
That was a little later as Rollie part's were getting far and few around Escape. I thought the two of them singing together and taking solo's was a perfect contrast. Manly and girly. I mean tenor and saprano.
@@brianpoole3484 The record company was getting ready to drop them and as a result they got SP and not later and not because Rolie's singing parts were getting fewer and fewer. I love Rolie's singing actually and both of them together. I assume "manly" is Rolie and SP is "girly"? Women loved SP and that's the bottom line. Call him anything you want. He sang with passion and the girls who were drooling at his performances were never in doubt they were seeing a guy.
So good to see this because Journey went onto legendary status with their new lead singer Robert Fleishman... D'oh! Wait a minute. They got it right with their second new lead singer. J/K, this is cool rare footage.
+Harold.not.the.Barrel Winds of March may be their best song with Perry on vocals. I can't believe it's not on their greatest hits albums - I guess it didn't sell well or maybe was never released as a single.
Frankly, they remind me of Humble pie with Robert Fleishman as a lead singer. A good band live but not a great band for standing out from the crowd. They were correct in making the change to bring Steve Perry in. Although I love to listen to this music back in the day, I find the ability of a great singer adds so much more depth to the performance
Keith T excellent point!!! DEPTH of / to the performance and Steve brought it in SPADES! Please read the two eye-opening articles analyzing his voice. Google: analysis of Steve Perry's voice and you will come across two incredible articles that I recommend lovers of MUSIC (not necessarily Steve or Journey) should read. one of the is called "One in a Million" by Ross Muir. I only recommend them to people who want to learn or know more, and you seem to be one of them.
I'm glad I stumbled across this one. I'd only heard Fleishman on "For you". I thought he did a good job on Rolie's part on "Anytime", but wasn't cray on what he did on what Perry normally sang in it. I was wanting to see what his version of "Wheel in Sky" would have sounded like.
It's demo, not a final song. It'd chande more or less during the production. Fleischmann is not worse singer compare to anyone, even Steve Perry homself.
Journey was two bands - First, the kickass take no prisoners band which would not have lasted, because they needed more audience and money to survive. Which stayed true to their original sound. Second, the corporate sellout band that made a ton of $ from having a flamboyant front man with a voice, and playing power ballads and pop songs to make the chickies swoon. Which stayed true to the label and its execs. I am just so grateful I had the opportunity to see Journey #1 a bunch of times - as a musician, my ass was truly kicked. I did see #2 a couple of times - I gave them a chance, but didn’t get much from the glitz and the watered down sound. I left those shows still hungry.
Wow, yes definitely a buried treasure! I was actually at this concert! Unbelievable! I still have the concert program. I was 21 years old and got so freaking stoned!
Love "DIVA"……Robert kicks ass!!! Perry is no doubt one of the greatest vocalists of all time, but Robert has more BALLS and a heavier more energetic FUN sound. I personally would have loved to have seen Robert stay in the band a bit longer so that we could have had some material to listen to with him in the band. The current lineup of Journey is in my opinion the best so far. GREAT LIVE BAND.
Unfortunately he was kind of a dick and had to go! I was there...one night he treated me like shit and a week later he was gone! Don't know if he's a good guy but my bet is not and he treated me like I was a piece of shit so let that speak for itself!
I really enjoy the first three journey albums. Fleischman contributed some good ideas for Infinity but was a cornball singer with one volume. All trained singers know singing softly, for example, takes more ability than screaming. Perry could sing softly but could also pass as a heavy metal front man.
Danny Martinez you are so right! singing softly takes more skill, more ability than screaming. and signing softly doesn't just mean the actual tone but the emotion/meaning behind the lyrics. Steve is very much a melodic, lyrictist. And yes, he can do more than just pass as a metal singer: Edge of the Blade proves he was a good metal singer (not screamer). I wish they would have done more of that. but this is a posting on Fleishman who is an exceptional singer but whose style wasn't quite right for what they wanted.
He is a great singer and of course he could sing sofly, you can hear it on Channel album. I think the band new his ability to sing extremely high and they wanted him to sing this way. It was 1977 and any rock band wanted to sound a bit like Led Zeppelin. Herbie Herbert just was a step forward and Journey with Steve Perry defined the sound of 80's. I think they could became famouse with Fleischman, maybe not so high selling band, but they coud have multiplatinum status anyway.
@@МихаилАлексеев-ч1м He belts out Winds of March here instead of giving it the soft approach that Perry gave it. (And he wrote the melody of the song) Journey was great before Perry but Jonathan Cain was really the addition that made the greatest arena rock band of the early 80s. There would be no Escape or Frontiers without Cain.
"PERRY" IS A POWER POP/ROCK VOCALIST, HE'S GREAT AT WHAT HE DOES. I LOVE PERRY.BUT "ROBERT FLEISHMAN" IS EQUALLY AS GOOD AS "PERRY",THEY ARE TO DIFFERENT STYLES.NO POINT COMPARING APPLES 2 PEARS."ROBERT FLEISHMAN" WAS NEIL SCHON' 'S "BEAST OF BURDEN".
Fleishman was really good. He had just one big problem: he came along with his own manager and Herbie, the real puppeteer behinf Journey fired him and got Steve Perry behinf his back. Years later, while trying to still handle the band at his will, the very same Steve Perry got him fired...karma's a bit...! ha.
Robert Fleishman cowrote Wheel in the Sky, Anytime, & Winds of March before a falling out between himself & Journey manager Herb Herbert led to his leaving. Fleishman next surfaced as the lead singer for Vinnie Vincent Invasion but decided to quit the band rather than sign away all of his future songwriting royalties. The first video for the Vinnie Vincent Invasion actually features then VVI lead singer Mark Slaughter lip synching to Fleishmans vocals. He still sits in with Journey occasionally
@@RA-VEN8 It's not a matter of "logic". It's a fact. SP IS a legend. The man's singing abilities are not open to question, neither is his importance in propelling Journey to the stratosphere. RF, simply, can't compare with that legacy.
keyboard player? I forgot , I remember him being the singer, (before my time) Steve was already in band, steve smith from Montrose excellent drummer just give him a snare drum and a brush, Steve will proceed too blow your mind, serious kung fu on drums.
You can find everything on RU-vid. Crowd responding to .. "who is this guitar player" . That's what I thought when I first heard solos from Santana on the radio and thought, that isn't Carlos. Toussaint Le Overture and others were just the most intense soloing I'd ever heard. The pre Infinity albums were special; spiritual, timeless like you were cast off into a sweet death. That theme was continued into Infinity and beyond and made them rich and famous but that earliest stuff was captivating. OH, love me some Abraxas Pool too. Tears it up on Guacahoma .. or whatever its called. Its the double stop and mute.
Well....When Journey did their Generations tour a few years back, Cain sang the Rollie parts during the first set; where they played stuff from the first three albums. I was blown away because I NEVER thought I'd ever hear Journey play the old stuff live.
This is the only live version of Journey I can find on RU-vid before Steve Perry joined. Wonderful. I saw them this year and they of course rocked. Fusion rock is not a big money-maker, but I loved it then and still do.
While I can’t deny the absolute greatness of Steve Perry, I have to be honest and say that I think Journey would have been more my kind of band with Fleishman. He’s more edgy and I suspect they’d have stayed a little more heavy with him. Also Infinity is the only Perry era album I like and I noticed Fleishman has some co writes on the album. Plus I prefer Dunbar to Smith, Rollie to Jonathan Cain etc. I absolutely couldn’t stand the band by Escape
Can’t believe I never saw this earlier. Great footage. Wild to see Robert Fleishman out front, like bizaro world. Always wondered how he rolled with being replaced and seeing the band skyrocket. To know that he had the job but wasn’t the one who sent them into orbit. Could be a heavy weight to carry around.
I think Robert Fleischman had something to do with recording this....it was his first show with the band and this concert was posted on his youtube id in the past...dunno where it went
It was the singers hair cut that did him in... It wasn't Schon's fault about getting a lead singer. CBS records (Clive Davis) threatened to drop the band unless they got a lead singer. The band's manager Walter Herbie Herbert hired the Fleischer boy...
Uhhhmuhh.... Wheres Steve Perry? Hiding behind the amps gettin' ready to pop out and win the hearts of millions of people? In less than a year the rocket ship to the stratosphere will be blasting off on a long, exciting Journey!! 🚀 🌟 🌙
"ROBERT FLEISHMAN" IS A POWERFUL VOCALIST VERY UNDERRATED. GO LISTEN TO 1st VINNIE VINCENT INVASION (ALBUM) WITH "ROBERT" DYNAMIC,VERSATILE, MELODIC PURE GENIUS ARE SOME WORDS TO DESCRIBE MR FLEISHMAN.
My wife and I were at a Traffic concert at Winterland ,SF. Before the concert started a video was playing on the big screen of Journey, taped at one of the "unknown bands of San Francisco" shows that Bill Graham put on every Tuesday night. I loved the music I was hearing at the time and found out as much about who this unknown band was and got their first record and became their biggest fan. We went to seem them all over northern Cal. S.Perry was introduced one night and we never went again.
Neal Schon will always say that Steve Perry raised the vocal bar for the band despite any conflict. Arnel Pineda is as good if not better than Steve Perry in some ways, and Steve Perry will always be better than Arnel Pineda in some ways.
Ya Think? Perry most likely wrote at least some of the vocals. Arnel is a great kareoke singer....that's all. And Arnel's story is like the Story line to Rock Singer as well as Ripper Owens and Judas Priest.
Steve Perry "destroyed" Journey?? Apparently you have Glaucoma and are enjoying the benefits of Mother Nature's herbs a little too much. I agree as a fan of ALL era's of Journey on their own merit than the music got very poppy and commercial by Raised On Radio, but to say that he destroyed Journey is absolutely ridiculous and truly laughable. The real truth is, without Steve, we probably wouldn't have had a "Journey" after the 3 progressive albums before Steve joined.
I was at the gig where Journey was the opening act for ELP. The crowd hated Fleishman so much that he caught a shoe in the face! Thrown from about 20 feet out. Too bad the record company forced them to get a frontman/singer.
Sorry ... but Journey did not become a great band until Steve Perry was hired by Herbie Herbert as their lead vocalist. Steve has a raw & special talent that made Journey a #1 band. I am sure that many other fans would agree !!!😊😊 . .
