These guy has the biggest balls. Jumped on the tour out of the blue and had these songs totally under control. There´s a video here of him doing Ask the Lonely. Totally sure of himself
I've seen journey with all the "replacement" singers after perry and honestly the show I saw with Jeff Soto was the most high energy show I've seen out of the 6 times I've seen them by far (House of Blues Orlando)...And Neal had the sickest Guitar Rig I've ever seen, (Zakk Wylde JCM 800, a Diezel VH-4 and A Fender Cyber Twin, all sitting on Marshall Cabs) and they were all on and CRANKED, which that's always been my only complaint about journey live is Neal is never high enough in the mix for me. But not that night, his stage volume alone was melting the front couple rows that were on his side of the stage....Everyone in the band seemed super pumped that Night, it was AWESOME! JSS by this point had the songs nailed down pat and as always, gave an incredible performance...Yeah he doesn't have the super high end range, but he's got an incredibly powerful voice all the while making singing one of if not THE HARDEST catalogues ever look easy!!
Listen him in Malmsteen's or Axel Rudi Pell's albums. He could sing anything. It's the same to tell that Geoff Tate didn't gave high notes, but it is obvious not true.
I dunno man, Trial by Fire has SO many absolutely killer tracks...hard to pick one for me - they were firing on all cylinders in the songwriting dept...such a shame what happened next...
One More is an awesome song, and there are a couple others that are pretty good. Overall though, the album has too much of a coffee shop sound... and I can’t stand that aspect. First time I listened through it I almost fell asleep... I hated it. Much preferred Arrival and Generations. But I’ve since come around to it at least a little bit!
@@alexp6016 Frontiers was my favorite Journey record before this one dropped, but I have to say this one became my favorite. Still is, but when you've got a catalogue as great as theirs, there are a lot of great options for a favorite album ;-)
I really love seeing all the comments on here about how everybody just loves Jeff Scott Soto with journey. I was so happy to hear that he was with them after he and Neil Schon did Soul SirkUS. (Great album, too)
I saw Steve Augeri with the band live 3 times and I thought he was VERY underrated and did a great job for them. Arrival was an AWESOME album I thought. I loved it. Crowds at Steve Augeri shows loved him. Sold out shows once everyone realized he was damn good and cool. Tough shoes to fill with Perry that's for sure.
Journey's material uses up tenors and ultimately discards them. Yes, Perry fell victim to this along with Augeri. Even Pineda's voice is starting to wear down performing these songs. It's unfortunate, but not something that the band could have foreseen. With Journey, it's a timing thing. If you like a specific singer, go see them at their prime.
@@chriswoosley3883 Thank you Chris. I appreciate others who agree with me. I LOVED Arrival. I think it did not get the hype that Generations did cause fans were NOT as receptive to Steve Augeri as they were to Arnel since Augeri was to much a clone. I loved Augeri, I thought he was VERY cool and underrated and a great singer.
Too bad Steve Perry never got to do this song live. Such a good album. The only person in Journey I ever think came close to Steve Perry is the man behind the kit, Mr. Deen Castronovo. Well, besides Arenel of course.
joshua pressley unfortunately the other Steve didn’t have the longevity to perform journey songs. But then journey songs are vocal killers. Jeff Scott Soto sounds amazing on the journey stuff but may be lacking a bit of tenderness to have been the long term front man. I think Jeff is the most talented vocalist to perform with journey. Not getting the opportunity to perform long term may have saved his voice coming into his older age. He still sounds amazing to this day losing little range that comes with age.
This sounds amazing. Very different from Augeri singing it, but just as good. His and Deen's backing vocals work perfectly together. They should have kept Jeff. Too bad Neal's ego was too big.
Jeff should have worn tails. :-) The dude behind the drums... He should be fronting the band. I know that he doesn't want that but DAMN Deen has pipes!
This was by far my favorite tune on, "Trial by Fire," has a strong driving rhythm similar to, "Separate Ways." Would love to hear Deen sing this one, I'm sure he would nail it!
This is my first time seeing Soto with the band (was lucky enough to see Augeri on this tour before he left). I never thought he was a good fit, but I see now that he could have hacked it well enough given enough time and practice. I was waiting to pass judgement on him until after he minted an album with them, but that ended up not happening.
What I like about Soto is that he sings these songs in his own particular style while still rocking the songs. Augeri and Arnel were selected because they sound a lot like Steve Perry, and while I do love them, I think having someone with a different style would have been a good move going forward.
Too bad hind sight is 2020 and we can't see the forest through the trees. This was genuinely excellent performance. They should have at least recorded an EP with JSS to capture the feel and the writing possibilities on record.
If I programmed Journey's concerts, I would have segued without breaking into "Separate Ways," because they are very similar and are even in the same key.
Dude has great lead singer moves. Sounds like a really solid type of voice for certain songs. Audio quality of the recording isn't great ( just how it is ).
As a tried and true Steve Perry fan, I have to say I think Jeff Scott Soto did the best job fronting Journey after the band chose to replace Steve. Steve Augieri, Arnel and Jeff are all excellent singers but Jeff is the only one that comes close to the vocal power of Steve Perry.
Trying to figure out reasons for why/how things happen with bands is probably a headache. There are often viewpoints of the participants that don't match.
I have to respectfully disagree. Steve Perry was a massive force in the band, and without him, there’s a very real chance they never would’ve reached the level of superstardom they did. But Journey started off as a group that focused on talented instrumentals: Gregg Rollie’s keys, Aynsley Dunbar’s drums, Ross Valory’s bass, and, of course, Neal Schon’s guitar (and for a very short while, George Tickner’s rhythm guitar, as well). And every instrumentalist that has come through that band since has been phenomenal. To the masses, Steve Perry’s voice will be a defining feature of the band. But clearly the band can, and has, moved on without him. But they are a musician’s band at heart - what makes Journey Journey is the talent of the players coming together to make great music. And the voice is only one of those instruments. While it can be argued that Perry might be the most talented singer they had, he is not the ONLY talented singer they have had. And the instrumentalists are still wildly talented (even though it is sad to see Ross and Steve Smith ousted from the group).
@@Mr._Mints I agree. People don’t stop supporting a soccer team just because a player leaves and for to another club. The club is the thing. I’m also interested that so few people (including your post) fail to mention Jonathan Cain. From the time he joined (essentially Escape onwards) he was the principal song writer in the band. Every hit they had since then ( I won’t name them all) were written almost entirely by him.
Have to disagree on that one. Perry was great and Journey's pinnacle was with him; no doubt. However, it's always been Neil's band; he is one of the greatest guitarists and songwriters of all time. Jonathan is an important writer and is still there. Arnel has an incredible voice and energy. I have seen Journey many times both with Perry and Arnel and they are still awesome.
