Absolutely phenomenal. However what I'd give to hear Steve Perry sing this live. The album version is one of the most underrated Journey songs of all time. I can only imagine what it would sound like with Steve singing it live.
That's hilarious! Yeah, I saw them in 2001 and the women around us were losing their minds watching him. This is my fav Journey song by the way, and they opened the show with it when I saw them. They absolutely nailed it. Really miss this lineup...
@@markcloer2274Yes, one of mine and my kids' favorite songs too, we still listen to it when we get in the car. I'm sure tight, low-rise, red leather pants with un-buttoned shirt contributed to their frenziness...😂... along the Robert Plant hair 😂 Great memories!
Another masterful performance by one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Neil Schon really makes that guitar sing on this track, as on so many others. I wish they would bring this song back to open up their shows.
Sadly Trial By Fire is a forgotten album for this band, and they never seem to play any TBF songs anymore. Aside from the first tour they did in 1998 these songs have probably been played more by cover bands than Journey itself.
@@chriswoosley3883 you know, Deen really loves his drums but i think he could be a really good lead singer. if he can do it while sitting down WHILE playing the kit, just imagine what he could do if he were unleashed upon the world …
Thanks for sharing this! Gotta give credit where credit is due - Augeri did a good job on this. Have to wonder now how he went from this to eventually going on stage with this band a few years later and having no voice left at all. Scary. Journey must have really worned this guy's voice out.
@@tracievaughn9092 Journey burns out every singers voice! Steve Perry was smart towards the late 80s and I think he knew it was tiring his voice hence that's the last he ever toured with Journey. He rejoined in 96 for the Trial by Fire album, and before the tour dates he was once again out of the group!
Journeys issue with their singers is a combination of the difficulty on vocal parts, and the constant touring. Perry's voice was destroyed after Escape/Fronters tours. The drop off of range and clarity to a lower range and raspiness was startling from 81-86. After 87 he could hardly hit any of the notes he used to. I do however enjoy his raspy, deeper, more soulful voice. But it certainly wasn't a natural progression
@@JB-bi4lf he left Journey in 1986 during ROR from overtouring burnout, so it’s not at all true that he couldn’t sing in 1987. He was sick during the 1991 Bill Graham memorial performance but showed up to honor the legend. He sounded amazing in 1994 solo album FTLSM and tour.
@@deepbluesea8163 right... but it was quite obvious he voice had detoriated massively. There's some pretty rough performances from that ROR tour. His voice was going. Same thing happened again in 1994 with his solo tour
Interesting to hear Augeri sing this one. This concert seems to be years shortly after the release of “Trial By Fire” anyway so the live performance is naturally more akin to the studio recording, just with Augeri instead of Perry. Very nice to hear.
The band had rarely performed this song up to this point, so they likely hadn't gotten used to adding changes that they would done had they had performed a full support tour for Trial by Fire. This fact likely explains why this sounds pretty rote to the studio recording. Not that that's bad or anything. It's just that Journey so rarely performed any material from Trial by Fire.
Message Of Love, One More, Trial By Fire, Colors of the spirit, Can't Tame The Lion, Forever in Blue, Castles Burning ...all great ..Perry sounds great on that album but Schon and Smith are on fire
Hell of performance by Steve Augeri .That was a smoking line up in the band then ! Deen on drums and Neil absolutely KILLING it on guitar !!!!!!!!!! .....................
Considering that Steve Perry bowed out for the supporting tour of this song and the Trial by Fire album in general, the group was likely thirsty to perform these tracks live as they never really got the chance until Augeri arrived.
Eso esperamos todos, Steve Perry es irreemplazable, pero Augeri es tremendo cantante también, después de Perry mi segundo cantante favorito de Journey 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
This might be from their tour of 1998 after they had the Armageddon song, their first tour with Augeri. I saw them on that tour in San Diego. I might be wrong though. I snuck my camcorder in and taped about 40 min. It has never seen the light of day... It might stay that way as I can't find a converter for 8mm tape to digital.
It's from Phoenix AZ on 31/12/2000, but indeed they also played it in 1998. If you ever manage to convert the footage to digital I would love to see it :)
Digital video cassette. Late 90’s and early 2000’s had small digital tapes that could then be uploaded to computer or Mac of the time through USB from device.
