There are few people on earth who can play drums as well as Deen does and few people on earth who can sing as well as Deen does. To be able to do both at the same time puts Deen in very elite company.
I'd love to see an EEG of that dang guy when he plays and sings simultaneously... that just astounds me. Playing drums already requires virtually independent control of all fours, the sense of rhythm and tempo and being able to recall and reproduce them for each song, and recall of and vocal performance of the same. That isn't learned, IMO.
jmil2tx i agree he is definitely talented. Deen is a great singer for sure. But he was lip syncing here. Just look at 2:15 and 3:10. Looks like he got things mixed up a little
@Deen Castronovo has been clean and sober for about 5 years now. That's his biggest achievement for which he should be most proud. Musically, he's killing it and this video shows how insanely talented he is. He made Journey sound like a rock band with his monster drumming skills. And nobody has the raw, passionate, pitch perfect tone Deen has when he's airing it out. Deen wouldn't know me if I stepped on his foot, but I am really proud of his recovery. His actions are speaking much louder than any words could ever do.
Glad to hear he’s been able to overcome his addiction. It’s tough to put something down..been sober from booze for nearly two years myself. It’s no easy thing. It’ll be great to see Deen back with Journey. I was blown away by his performance on this track the first time I saw him play/sing it.
Deen Castronovo should be lead vocals more often....He is absolutely phenomenal! Sounds so much like Steve Perry. Best lead vocal since Steve left the band.
I agree but according to the media he turned it down, I'm Not against Arnel he's doing a great job in keeping this band going as well as Neil & Jonathan are Since Steve Left Which are very hard shoes to fill, when steve left, Neil & Jonathan had to start all over again! which is not easy or fun to do!
@@connieebach8608 I have to agree. He almost has that same voice sound as Steve. Still can't take anything away from Arnel. Here's to Journey keep on playing.
I agree, his peak sounds just like steve perry, I can barely tell them apart the difference is only by watching this video! put this video on and walk away & listen you'll swear it was steve perry singing this when it's not simply Amazing!
Every time I hear Deen sing one of the Journey songs it makes me say that he really makes them his own. He isn't a Steve Perry clone. He brings himself to the song not the other way around. Very talented, very humble and very very good....
So very true. Everytime I hear him and see him drumming for such a wonderful talented group makes me actually tingle and feel very happy for his success since highschool here in Salem.
I really LOVE Steve Perry and I really grown to love ARNEL, but now THIS...is mind blowing! I LOVE Dean...and Neil...and all of Journey really. Amazing talents and people.
I agree when steve Left the Band Us fans thought Journey was finished until Arnel and deen took over the vocals as like everything things change! but it's good to see they're still around for us! after all these years!
Deen Castronovo has such a clear beautiful sounding voice it is such a pleasure to sit and listen to a real talent. Also to play the drums at the same time is a double amazement. Wishing him the best.
As a drummer who sings I can tell you Deen Castronovo was the real deal... One of the most underated singers. He could use pitch and tone like the best of them, while drumming.... Great stuff
I keep coming back to this... even if Deen weren't playing drums, he would still be the best singer of this song since Steve. The fact that he's singing AND drumming simultaneously an elite level is more impressive than most people realize.
Deen Cadtronovo is the best of the best! We all have a bump on the road of life. Deen will return to his drumming and singing as soon as he goes through these trials and tribulations. God is good, and he's got his hands wrapped around Deen. And this too shall pass and our Deeno will be corrected and back to his music, whichever band he choses. Whether its Journey or not. This man is too talented. Prayers for a successful cleansing and I can't wait for him to get back to his music. Deen is a music man who doesn't need Journey to be successful. He can do it on his own. Much Love to our Deeno!
I adore this man!!! As a drummer he is the bomb.....as a singer...well he could do all the songs for Journey and maybe I would go see them again!!! Deen RULES!!!
Always been skeptical and never I MEAN NEVER listen for more than a few seconds of anyone singing Perry's songs, but... I have to give it to him, not bad at all. Props 👍 ..! Just feels so odd, wrong, depressing 😏 lol... Love Steve
The greatest singer/drummer of all time, and there is just simply no comparison/contest. Don Henley, Phil Collins, Kelly Keagy, whoever --- they all sit in awe of Deen Castronovo of Journey.
Jellybeantiger Peter Gabriel was a singer. He played drums only in his first local bands, never in Genesis, and as talented as he is at vocals, he's still a small step below Deen in range, but their styles are so different that it would be hard to compare, as there are things that Peter does that I don't think Deen can do, like the great falsetto, and I think he has a better tone than Deen, but he's a singer, not a drummer. Levon Helm had a nice vocal style, but nothing extraordinary about it --- his range & vocal control wasn't head-and-shoulders above his peers, and there are numerous times that he got pitchy even on albums, but I even like the pitchy moments.
MMMarvelous Grew up listening to Journey and when Deen joined I fell in love with everything he did. No doubt the best singer/drummer ever. To this day I get chills from Deen's performances.
I don’t know that that they sit in awe, nor should they. But the 3 you mentioned along with Deen, should be on the Mounr RushMore of drummer/singers. The best 4 to EVER do it!!
He's done Journey Through Time with Neil Schon so they're obviously still in touch and playing together. And now that Schon/Cain fired Vallory and Smith from the group and need a new bassist and drummer, who knows? Maybe they'll bring Deen back!
A great voice with amazing range. What a great way to have a singer to fall back on if the lead goes down in a tour. Deen is in rehab and having been there, it will be a life-long process and the discipline to not put yourself in a position too fail. Those of us with a drug/alcohol problem all have nightmare memories of how we treated those close to us and I hope he is able to make amends with those people and forgive himself. Get back on your feet!!! I'm over 15 years and clean, so you can do it!!!
Cyndy Klenk I can't help but agree with you on that, me being a monster drummer myself. I just keep it a secret. But, I probably should make it known. Then I could make money like Dean. And, good drummers always enjoy what they're doing. Yes, indeed, Dean is a monster drummer w/quite a set of pipes.
I don't think Deen could've delivered this any better...Superb...His choices vocally, his drums. It just ALL worked on this iconic Ballad of JOURNEY'S 💖
Love this! Incredible version of this song - i'm not hating on Steve - but Deen owns this song - no-one does it better! Neil is so underrated - could listen to him play all day - he puts so much feeling in every note - one of the best! Still They Ride!
No way. Dean can’t touch Steve. My dad was Jesse and this song holds a special place in my heart. He sounds great but better than Steve Perry no freakin’ way!!!
Deen has amazing singing chops and is a badass drummer. I miss the energy he brought to Journey live on stage. The band today just isn’t the same without Deen and Ross.
Give him a hug for us, tell him we support him, and encourage him to tour with Revolution Saints on the mic! So glad he can finally put this nightmare behind him and move on with his life.
Damn, I can't believe how good this was considering Steve Perry is impossible to replace. Nothing but respect for Deen. Never realized how solid he was Drumming and Singing. Saw them last with Steve Augeri but this piece was not covered.
This drummer/singer is the only reason I would go see journey. Neal better not let this guy slip thru his fingers as he's my favorite journey member. Singing and drumming simultaneously is hard, believe me, I've never done it. I can't sing or play drums so it looks hard to me
I am a Arnel convert, especially after Steve gave him his blessing at the RRHOF ( Where Arnel got screwed by the RRHOF IMHO ) but Deen blows this out of the water. Amazing Talent and Gifted to be able to play the intricate timing of the drums on this track as created by another master, Steve Smith, one of the premier drummers on the planet. Deen incredibly delivers Steve Perry's vocals perfectly, and plays the drums perfectly, both at the same time. That, is 1 in about 8 Billion. Hats off to you Deeno, for your recovery beating the demons, and for your incredible musicianship. Rock On Sir !!!
Just my opinion, but Deen's voice sounds more like Perry then Arnel... absolutely amazing how much he sounds like Perry, it's almost spooky!.. and playing drums at the same time. In awe of this man..
Deen is the very best singer/drummer in the business - amazing talent - go listen to his excellent vocals as lead singer on the new album with Revolution Saints - check out the song "In the Name of the Father" - Deen is awesome !!
this dude is by far the most talented individual to ever grace journeys stage!!!!! absolute shame to see him go! hope he gets his problems worked out and makes a return to journey! shit, steve smith has been in journey three different times...i guess once your family, your always family. no matter how disfunctional the family gets!!!
Just hearing he fell into drugs again. If this is true - SO SAD! He's a great person, dad, player, singer. He got clean many years ago - let's pray he gets the strength to get through this awful time and comes back to everyone.
As a drummer and a big fan of Journey, always wondered very much why they didn’t just do the Night Ranger thing and let Dean be the lead on so many classic Journey songs. I’ve played and sang this song so much, I know it’s a gift, just share this song .....
He's made it so far from back in the late 80s. I ran into him at the mall in Salem Oregon the day or so before his family issue while in town. I wish we could have another off the record get together next time he's in town.
Please don't give up on Deen. The man has amazing chops and drum skills. He would be my choice for the lead singer. Embrace him as he goes through this and help anyway you can until his return to Journey
