I couldn't figure where Steve Perry was. Then it dawned on me that the drummer was singing! My goodness, this is the best version of Faithfully that I have ever heard! What a beast to sing it and drum it all at once. Wow!
I played and toured as a drummer in a Journey Tribute band. I also sang background vocals. Singing BGV’s to these songs playing drums is tough enough. Singing lead vocals is insane but to Deen, it’s just another day on the job. Deen sang Mother Father too. He’s a beast as a vocalist. He’s one of the top drummers in the world too IMO!
Deen, through the years, is probably one of the greatest vocalist/ drummers in a class that few musicians ever reach. He hasn't been given enough credit. He has been a saviour for Journey and essential component to their legacy. I have been a fan since this band began its "Journey" and asking Deen to come back for this 50th Anniversary tour was a great decision.
My friend and I saw them April 14th on their 50th Anniversary tour, and when Deen sang Mother, Father, we looked at each and our mouths dropped open. His vocals and drumming talents is beyond compare. Deen should be the lead vocalist, hands down in this version of Journey. I am blown away with Deen's talent.
You should listen to DEAN sing. Happy to give, which is probably journey's most difficult song to sing ever. He nails it. I mean, every note. His octaves are high. Incredible performance you tube it phenomenal It was never sung life ever until Dean performed it, it was heard at the end of the movie North Shore.
@@davino108I agree with you on every point you make. I will look for this song. You are preaching to the choir here. I was playing the Journey Through Time video and asked my son who was singing "Open Arms" and his answer was Steve Perry. After going to the concert was when I found the Journey Through Time video and audio only videos on RU-vid. I had to buy them once they were available, because I wanted to hear Deen singing the lead vocals. His voice and range is magical.
@MeanColleen That's why the record company shut down Journey Through Time, they sounded better than the current Journey band. That was Neil's way to get Deen back into Journey by showcasing his vocal and drum talents being the lead vocal while on drums in Journey Through Time.
I was at that show and can tell you he absolutely won over the crowd on that one. Just listen to them at the end, they went freaking berserk! Nothing but smiles everywhere. People were hugging and high giving, some had tears rolling down their face... it was unreal!
Every time I watch Deen perform. This guy blows my mind on his vocal ability. I know by experience as a drummer myself. It's not easy to sing sitting down. He did a great job.
Goosebumps on my goosebumps.....and Deen said just the other day that he is just "a drummer who happens to sing." That's like calling a hurricane a passing rainstorm.
@@Gma00001 Hmmmmmmmmmm. Deen is as good. It's just true. Except that Perry paved the way for the sound...vocally...Deen is imitating him, but sorry, he's just as good. Although, I haven't heard Deen sing in those crazy octaves that Perry sings for Wheel in the Sky...
@@amythinks Deen isn't even close. The tone of their voices is pretty similar but still, Perry's voice is the most beautiful thing ever. And obviously the range of Steve is head and shoulders above Deen's. Wheel in the sky is a great example, Deen was just mediocre in the song, but there are more examples too
Deen is by far my favorite Drummer and vocalist....this man can sing and play the drums....I actually seen him perform this song live.............AMAZING.........
Deen is still singing Journey's songs in the original key and much older than when Steve Perry was singing Journey's songs. They have to drop down for Arnel to sing Journey's songs. Plus Deen is an amazing drummer to be able to play drums like the beast he is, while singing awesome! God Bless Deen!
What a talent! To sing and play drums are difficult to do not too many can or have done it. His vocal range is fantastic along with the tone. Great entertainer! Keep on Deen!
This guy is a pure talent. Who the hell would want to sing a high tone song sitting down and spanking those drums. This is just fucking fucking amazing. Outstanding!
I know to some people this is probably sacrilege but I always felt that next to Perry, Deen is my favorite Journey vocalist. His tone is amazing even if all he was doing was singing, but as many have pointed out here to be hitting the drums at that level at the same time is otherworldly. Pure ear candy. I’m glad he’s healthy and back in the chair.
Not sacrilege. Credit where credit is due. He's incredible and I'm a die-hard Perry fan. Arnel was great technically, but Deen has the thing...the thing that Perry's got, Deen's got it too. Arnel doesn't have it.
@@emzlarge5280 I got love for all of them. Arnel is a good front man, moving around at the front of the stage. And if I could restore the OG Perry, course I would. But many people agree, people of high musical pedigree, Deen is the best vocalist between him and Arnel.
I saw Journey/Def Leppard on this tour in Fresno CA. Was blown away by Deen’s vocals. I also loved what Jeff Scott Soto brought as a frontman. Great vocals and stage presence.
The holding up of a picture....some will get it, some wont. Greatest journey singer ever next to steve...hell, they are both equal in my eyes. They both bring joy with their voices❤
Deen Castronovo is such a God Gifted Talented Drummer / Vocalist! One of the Best of all times. (IMO) So Glad to see him Playing Gigs with Neal from time to time and doing what he Loves to do Best! Your Music is deep in my Heart and Soul and has given me great inspiration over the past 30+ years as a Drummer. Your Music will live on for many many more decades to come! Keep up the Awesome work! God Bless You... DC
DAMN!!!!!! True talent right there. Just had my mind blown in person 4/14/23 here in Boise Idaho watching this man and the entire band absolutely kill it! 👊💥
Deen has quite a set of pipes on him!!!! I've listened to journey for many decades and didn't really focus on Deen as I have recently and boy can he sing!
@@josephcalitri5710 - Not sure if they ever lowered the key, but Perry's newest solo release is not the same Perry of the 80's. I don't think Perry could compete with Deen today. That said, Perry of the 80's remains the best ever.
Wait... WHaaaat??!!! 😲 WOW WOW WOW!!! 🤩🤩 SO AMAZING!!!! I’m sorry, how have I never heard of Deen Castronovo before today???!! Holy ENORMOUS talent Batman!! Chills & Goosebumps!! He is pitch perfect!! AND holds the notes longer (dare i day??!!) than even (bows down while typing his name) Steve Perry at his peak! Unbelievable!!! My mind is blown is such a fantastic way!!!! AND all while playing the drums!!! NOW THAT IS STAMINA and SKILL!!! WOW..!! I just can’t stop saying WOW..!! 😲🤯🤩 SO AWESOME!!!!!! 😎🎶🎵🎶🎵
Lord in Heavens. Mr Deen is a God sent. What a Monumental display of Talent. My hat off to you Mr. Deen. You Sir has no equal . May God, Bless you with with an abundance amount of health for many years to come. And thanks you kindly for your music.🙏
Castronovo, the best profesional vocal drummer ever! Incredible he have more sustain in long notes than Perry, and by the way he doing that, playing drums.
@@Pepening If of course Karen an excellent voice and also one of the beautiful singers of his time. Not only in drums but all kinds of percussion instrument. She is a woman's inspiration. What I mean is that as much as vocally or in the drums of Castronovo, the performance is very similar, they are both very high levels or to be executed at the same time. Castronovo is a beast drummer and a beast vocal that can emulate Steve Perry one the best high pitch singer ever. But I strongly agree with you regarding Star, Collins and Carpenter. Excellent comment my friend!
Harvey Gotos I would like to add Roger Taylor from Queen into the list! The guy has a 4 octave vocal range and can play drums as good as the people mentioned earlier.
this guy is amazing very rare to see such a talented set of pipes behind a drumkit but he plays the hell out of the drums journey better hang onto thus guy tight he could front journey no doubt watch out arnel
Pretty rad. Deen could have been the frontman singer and I could have played drums. Why didn't I think of that earlier? Awesome voice qualities Deen, love your work. Hope life is kind at present.
I'm floored actually. I just watched that 50-year tribute set that Gregg Rolie did with the guys and I noticed (through grainy video) that Arnel was not singing the high accent parts (to Feeling That Way and Anytime, etc) and it sounded like Steve but it looked like the drummer was doing it. So I searched and sure enough, homie got pipes! And not just "I used to sing lead in garage bands but now I drum for Journey" type pipes, but rather "I can knock out a couple dead on Steve Perry tunes" type. Kudos!!!
