Since the arrangements by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms, many have attempted the task of transferring Bach's iconic Ciaccona for solo violin (from the D minor Partita BWV 1004) to another instrument. The organ version by the Englishman William Thomas Best (1826-1897) was probably the first of a long series of adaptations, which also impressively document the change in taste in Bach interpretation on the instrument - especially with regard to the respective organ type. This new version fits into this chain of tradition; its aim is to offer a version of the D minor Chaconne that can be performed (also) on baroque organs in order to locate it sonically back to the time when it was created.
