We often see comments stating:-
- JS8CALL is full of vacant/snoozing operators
- It's just automated heartbeats
- The mode is dying due to lack of interactive QSOs
However, this is really missing the point (and power!) of the mode.
Hear I explain why the 24x7 'vacant operator' nodes and heartbeats are essential to the survival of the JS8 network and fundamental to the operation of the more advanced features of the mode.
The blog post I mention: www.m0spn.co.uk/2020/06/16/an...

Being new to Js8 I have to say this was the single most complete and informative discussion of the heart beat and its function I have come across. Thank you sir.

Thank you for that explanation! I will start to leave my own node up 24/7 as soon as possible. I'm trying to get my family set up in another state. I'm not sure I will be able to reach them directly but it's nice to know that this is an option.

Great video! Thank you. Some of this can be a bit mystical and it's making more sense now.

Thanks for making this video - definitely the best JS8CALL deep dive I've seen! I've been trying to get back on JS8CALL - played around a little last year and made a few QSOs but never understood the automated features. This really helped! 73

This was very informative - Thank you. I still would like to chat though occasionally. Years ago, I had a small packet station msg board fro myself & local hams - was a lot of fun and very educational (especially the traffic routing). Cheers de KI5GX

Great video, thank you. Is there a suggested amount of times per hour to have the heartbeat set to be transmitted? Meaning how often is it best to send out the heartbeat?

I'm now referring to JS8CALL as JS8MAGIC because it is, magical.

I guess there is a way to request Jordan to add things to JS8CALL. I'm not sure where it was, and although I've heard of a "bug reports" place also, I am talking about a new feature. We have the new feature as of 2.0 where if you receive a response from a heartbeat where there is a message in that mailbox it adds, at the end of the response, Yes, and a number, which means there is a message in that stations box and its number. The little add on I'd like to see would be an additional audio sound file that you could add, like your message received audio file, and your directed message sound that happens all of the time that you can add a file for. I would probably make that one a louder audio file so I would know there was a message for me. That said, I do not do the automated beacon thing, because I want to see those responses and have to be there when my responses come to see the added message waiting for you number and call sign. Hopefully you understand my Mesh type interests here.

Thanks for the video. One of the best, with clear audio and good resolution of your js8call screen. On my current version I have only AUTO+CONF. It asks me to confirm every time I want to reply to a heartbeat. How do I switch that off? It means I have to be constantly glued to the screen even if I'm in and around the shack. Will it ask me to confirm any other of the automated features? Like relaying a message for someone. Or any of the Queries? I understand it's to comply with US regs. If I need to be in the shack to manually Confirm every query or relay or message box operation... what is the point?? Maybe I am missing something.

Do you happen to know how to leave a "pop up" message for the receiving station?

Thank you for taking the time and effort in making this most informative video. It has cleared up many things foe me, and I guess, many others too. To make a good education video like you did takes time, effort and patience.

Automated? It's not automated. There are a whole series of steps I must take just to send and receive messages through the network. I have to map out the route. This is so frustrating to me. I should be able to send a message to a call sign and have it go through without me having to figure out the route. Perhaps what's missing is system acks?

all I see is computers talking to other computers that reply to other computers.
