He's rolling over everything. His mechanics got messed up somewhere between 2021 and 2022 and he hasn't fixed it. 2020, he turned his hands over well after they were through the zone. 2022 and this year, he turns them over just after contact. Eye is still good. Pitch choice is still great. Guy just needs someone to show him some game film and make him do some palm up drills.

Soto is currently on a fringe HOF trajectory, as opposed to the possible inner circle one we thought he was capable of. If he wants to reset his path, he needs to go to a team with favorable park factors to lefties. Personally, I think it would be best for him to sack off the Padres and sign with either the Yankees, Dodgers, Astros, or more interestingly the Orioles and Reds. Going to the Yankees, Dodgers, or Astros would make him a villain, but possibly an iconic one. The Reds make sense as a landing spot if they were willing to open up their checkbook and have the capacity to kick off a dynasty in a weak division. The young pitching core is coming along, they have a farm system carrying potential impact bats, and it's 50% better than league average for lefties towards hitting nukes. If the owner can pull his dick out of his ass, there could be something brewing there. Baltimore is the true wildcard here for me. I could see them actually making a run at Soto in FA. #1 farm system in baseball for the past few years and some of those guys are starting to make an impact. If they get any semblance of a pulse from their pitchers, whether that be development, trades, or free agency, they are a tasty midmarket option. I would advise Soto to keep any eye on how the baby birds develop and what moves the team makes over the next 2 seasons.

@baseballmvp26
@baseballmvp26 Год назад
I think what he needs to realize is the padres didn’t give up 5 top 100 prospects for him to just try to walk. They traded for him so that he can swing the bat, but when he does swing the bat he’s trying to pull the ball now instead of hit it the other way which worked on the nationals because he had no protection in the lineup with the nationals, but now it’s different he’s on a team full of studs, I think pitchers are starting to realize just grow strikes and he won’t swing, so if he realizes that all this has happened, and just swing at he strikes he gets, he can go back to being a stud, he’s shown it in the past, the walks will come because his discipline is just too good, he just needs to start swinging the bat and trying to hit it to the opposite field

Agreed. I know a lot of people don't like advanced analytics, but it's hard to argue against the fact he's hit 32 balls over 95 mph this season and only has 16 hits total... that's extremely unlucky. So far this season, it's the highest Hard-Hit% of his career at an insane 56.1% of the time. In other words, over half the time (he puts the ball in play), he's hitting a rocket. The one knock on him is his swing-and-miss rate on balls outside the strike zone has gone way up. It's also interesting that the number of Cutters he sees has doubled and the number of Sinkers he sees has been cut in half. That sounds like right-handed pitchers are trying to force the ball in on his hands, causing him to pull more, and hitting a lot of ground-ball outs to the right side.

Looking at the zone for Soto you can see even in this video that umps have made that zone bigger with him. striking out on pitches outside and below the zone. Having to swing at cheese on the outer part of the plate since dude was calling strikes there. PC also has something to do with it too im sure. He cant play his game on the clock. Humbleness is elusive amongst the younger star athletes. That aside, here is the technical analysis of Sotos slide. Yes, OBP is the accurate gauge to determine how often a player gets on base. That is it though. The utility of that OBP, though, is in the slugging %. The wider the gap between OBP and SLG, the higher the utility of your PAs. When Soto went to the Padres, his OBP was.338 and SLG was .390. Hardly any utility affected by Soto, above his singles. He also only had 228 PAs with the Padres in 2022. I know the OPS adds the two together but the more interesting number is the spread between the two numbers.

Could this all be a mental issue with Soto? The trade rumors that swirled around him last summer. The trade itself. Uprooting himself 3k miles across the country to a new team with much higher expectations. Not to mention the looming free agency after the '24 season where he will lead the free agent market. Lots of significant decisions by him and his camp are still to be made. Several things for the young man to deal with. It's not like he just lost IT overnight....

So now that we're about FORTY games into the year, the walks and hard hit rate never went anywhere which are key to consistency as a hitter. The video for these past 20 games should be "What's wrong with everyone BUT juan soto?" I'm so glad Soto is gonna earn his money at this rate now. Yet I'm now terrified that if the Padres don't compete, there will be less of a chance that he even wants to stay if offered. Here's to hoping Manny becomes even half of what he was last season, Nando strikes out quite a bit less (not likely) getting a catcher than can hit a ball (also unlikely) and Boegarts' ego being brushed aside as they all along with Cronenworth are not going anywhere until we see 2030.

I'm a Nats fan. When Soto turned down that 440mil I was shocked. I was shocked as much that the Lerner's offered that much as I was that he rejected it. However, Boras is a guy who like to take his biggest clients to free agency. So, maybe not as shocked. I would think $440M though would have gotten Soto to take the reigns from Boras. Lastly, I at least had the piece of mind that the Lerners tried. It wasn't like the deferred nonsense they did with Bryce Harper.
