Yup and as a Mets fan I couldn’t admire his work ethic more. That’s the best part about watching prospects, to see how well they can study the game/their mistakes and make proper adjustments to enhance their game.

Still, he proved the de Grom is human; he makes mistakes. And de Grom is no dummy - if you throw a mistake pitch to Soto (as young as he was), he WILL make you pay, which even de Grom knew - and knew early. Soto learned that from Rendon (now with Anaheim) and Kendrick (still a National - and is largely WHY he's still a National). If Kieboom has a clue, he'll learn from Soto and Kendrick. Slow heartbeat, and wait for the pitcher to screw up. (Scary team offensive statistic from 2019; the Nationals led all of MLB in offense with two outs after the sixth inning - basically no lead was safe.

I mean I'd say from a pure hitting standpoint Soto got the better of Degrom. Which is impressive because Degrom is the best pitcher in the league

@@goldeneagleboy3 It depends, I would say usually when Soto got contact on the ball, it was great solid contact and he rarely got jammed. But Degrom struck Soto out a lot, which is very hard to do. So, it's quite a matchup.

@@somedudelul1951 If I counted correctly, DeGrom struck out Soto 3 times. Soto had 4 pop flies, all but the one to third base being solid contact, 1 groundout which was a great fielder's play, walked 2 times, got HBP once and hit 2 times (RBI double and HR). That's a total of 13 plate appearances and Soto got on base 5 times. So that's an OBP of .385 but his BA was .200 (since the 2 walks and 1 HBP don't count into at-bats for the calculation of BA). Although that BA may seem low and the sample size isn't big, I don't have anything better to do than to also calculate SLG (6 total bases out of 10 at-bats = .600) and OPS (SLG+OBP = .985). The conclusions we can draw from this small sample size if we want to draw any are: While generally Juan Soto looked like a below average batter against DeGrom (.200 BA), he got on base decently often. Especially considering that his BA was below average for DeGrom standards (DeGrom's BA-against in 2019 was .205 according to fangraphs). The more amazing stuff is Juan Soto's plate discipline, drawing out 2 walks from a pitcher that barely walks any players. Also, when Soto *did* hit the ball (and it didn't go to the fielders), he hit it well. A double and a HR, combined with his good plate discipline and despite rather bad BA against DeGrom, Juan Soto shows exactly why DeGrom cannot even give him an inch - Soto will take a god damn mile, if not all of them.

@@boosteddrimmsu Wow you really summed it up. Yea Soto is a great eye at the plate and generally has his launch angle figured out. But on DeGrom he struck out and popped up a lot. That being said, when Soto did make contact he made great contact. DeGrom is a tough pitcher for Soto (as he is with everyone), but Soto still manages to get on base much more against DeGrom than most hitters.

Which brings me to another point..... players can "just miss the ball" sometimes. When a player swings and misses it doesn't always mean they were looking for a different pitch or location. Announcers try to over analyze every little thing too much.
