In this video I am featuring Jubilee Class 4-6-0 No. 45604 'Ceylon' The era depicted here is in the immediate aftermath of the nationalisation of the railways circa 1949/50 when experimental liveries were being trialled. Lined black was an almost default position pending a final decision on colour schemes which can be seen here on the Midland Compound hauling an express perishables train and Coronation Class Pacific 'City of Leicester'. The Jubilee 'Ceylon' was one of the select few which received an LNER green with red, cream and grey lining. This was to be very short lived however as GWR dark green with black and orange was adopted for all express passenger locomotives. 'Ceylon' retained this livery until withdrawal in 1965.

thanks for sharing, do like the way you have a theme for all of your films, this one , the liveries after 1948, absolute cracker.

Hello Lee, Many thanks indeed for your comments and observations. I try as best I can to replicate or rather approximate a particular theme/era to lend some authenticity for the potential viewer. Sometimes, I do upload sessions to highlight models above historical authenticity, Hornby-Dublo and Wrenn uploads coming to mind but mixing and matching "because I can" is not for me. However, I recognise that many enthusiasts do and that indeed is the beauty of this hobby.

Nice one . Been missing the channel . Nice to see and hear it running again .lovely looking Jubilee . Have to say I’m not a fan of the livery , it would look gorgeous in LMS Crimson . But that’s just me . I know it was one of the experimental liveries tried . I think there was a blackberry black one as well! Just watching the valve gear is mesmerising though . Like the milk train . ‘Pure Fresh Milk” not seen that one before - Dapol?

Hello Russell, Always good to hear from you. Thank you for that comment. Yes, have to agree, it's a bit of a curate's egg that one. Not much to say really except that it was "experimental" Delighted you liked the "express perishables"! Yes, the milk tanks are Dapol with a couple of old Limas thrown in. Also, and this is a first for me, there's a Hornby six wheel 'Insulated Milk' van. This is a later China 2000s made one in LMS but the inappropriate white roof had to go! I also purchased a much earlier Tri-ang/Hornby one in white which I've just repainted in BR maroon as sundries/parcels vehicle. The railways were good at re adapting redundant vehicles to meet changing traffic needs. I never liked that vehicle originally, largely because it had 'Palethorpes' written all over it! It's all good stuff!

Bachmann have made a lovely job of updating this model and I do like green livery. Hopefully they will produce an LMS black model.🤞

Hi Lynden, Thank you for your comment and observations about this 'Jubilee'. I also have a Mainline/Bachmann 'Patriot' in this livery which I'll put up again. 'Stay tuned' as they say, I have the later Bachmann Jubilee 'Madras' in LMS black ie cherry and straw lining but with 'British Railways' on the tender which is yet to make its debut.

Thanks for filming. I wonder if you know why there was so large a gap between 'British' and 'Railways' on the tenders? Was the original plan to include some sort of 'badge' in between the two words?

Hi, Thank you for your enquiry. The short answer is that I don't really know. If there was an idea to insert a badge of some kind in between the words, I have not come across it. The liveries on display here were very short lived - maybe decisions were taken that finalised the issues once and for all. It's a bit like all the theories put forward as to why Schubert's 'Unfinished Symphony' remained that way. The most probable explanation given that he was only 23 when he wrote it was that he simply didn't have know-how, ability, inspiration , call it what you will, to follow up with two movements that matched or would do justice to the first two movements...

Hi James, Many thanks indeed for your comments and observations. Yes, the prices are going through the roof. The advice here is to shop around and not regard Ebay prices as the yardstick. I purchased 'Ceylon' and 'Madras' at circa £70/80 less than any on Ebay. I find that even the latest offerings listed as 'used' are still over expensive. Alternativey, if you like 'Jubilees' as I do you could go for a Mainline one. I picked one up, 'Glorious' in LMS crimson 'brand new' for £40. It's a beautiful model, runs well. a bit noisy, but way better than the early batches and I've shown how you can add some judicious mods to 'improve' the overall look...just get rid of that chimney!
