Judas Priest we're HUGE. probably the first true heavy metal band. They were definitely inspired by Black Sabbath. Phenomenal band with an otherworldly lead singer. I definitely recommend victim of changes, delivering the goods, and painkiller Biz. They're currently on their 50th anniversary tour and they have tons and tons of great songs.

Judas Priest is the premiere heavy metal band from the UK... They were the first band in the 70's to embrace the term 'heavy metal' for their music, and set the stage for every British heavy metal band after them - Motorhead, Iron Maiden, Saxon, Venom... etc. and they ruled the 80's. The band was formed in Birmingham, UK where Black Sabbath were from... Judas Priest were a local rock band for years since 1970, but the band solidified their line-up by 1975 w/ Glenn Tipton & K.K. Downing (guitars), Ian Hill (bass) and Rob Halford (vocals)... they went thru a few drummers in their career. Their first 2 records were not successful... but Judas Priest were signed to a US label in 1977 and began touring the world that year and releasing 5 studio albums by 1979 and released a successful live album in '79 called 'Unleashed in the East'... Priest had also popularized an image for heavy metal bands wearing leather outfits and jackets w/ metal studs... Lead singer Rob Halford would also ride a Harley bike on stage at their concerts. In 1980, Judas Priest broke big w/ their 6th album 'British steel' w/ drummer Dave Holland joining the band... this single 'Breaking the law' and 'Living after midnight' were hugely successful worldwide. By 1982, Priest were headlining arenas across America, and Iron Maiden were one of their opening bands... Judas Priest dominated the 80's, but later found their popularity being eclipsed by bands like Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Megadeth. In 1989, they were sued in Nevada for allegedly inspiring a double suicide; they were accused of putting in a "subliminal command" in a 1978 record. Priest went on trial in 1990 and were eventually acquitted. Scott Travis (drums) replaced Dave Holland that year. Determined to prove their strength, Judas Priest released their most aggressive album 'Painkiller' in 1990... However, despite their success, lead singer Rob Halford announced in 1992 that he was leaving the band for a solo career. After a long hiatus, Judas Priest re-emerged in 1997 w/ new singer Tim' Ripper' Owens, but the band was not as popular as they had been in the 80's, and released 2 records w/ Owens by 2001. Rob Halford's solo career was also not hugely successful. In 2004, Judas Priest announced a long-awaited reunion w/ Rob Halford back on vocals w/ Glenn Tipton & K.K. Downing (guitars), Ian Hill (bass) and Scott Travis (drums) and experienced a resurgence in commercial popularity. In 2009, they celebrated the 30th anniversary of 'British steel' by playing the entire record live on tour. Unfortunately, internal conflicts within Priest led to founding guitarist K.K. Downing leaving the band in 2011, and Judas Priest announced the addition of Ritchie Faulkner (guitar) to replace him. In 2017, guitarist Glenn Tipton announced that he was suffering from Parkinson's disease and would be unable to tour w/ Judas Priest, but would still be writing & recording in the studio. Judas Priest hired their producer Andy Sneap to be their touring guitarist, and celebrated their 50 year anniversary w/ a tour in 2021/ '22. In 2021, K.K. Downing announced he was working w/ singer Tim 'Ripper' Owens in a new band - K.K.'s Priest.... That same year on tour in the US, guitarist Ritchie Faulkner survived a near-fatal health scare and required heart surgery. He returned to playing live in 2022 only months later...

Sad Wings Of Destiny and Unleashed In The East (their 1979 live in Japan album) are totally worth track-by-track reviews! There would be no New Wave Of British Heavy Metal without Judas Priest. Hugely influential band. The Green Manalishi (With The Two Prong Crown), from Unleashed In The East (and Killing Machine) is a cover of a song by Peter Green's Fleetwood Mac. Diamonds And Rust, from Sin After Sin is a cover of a Joan Baez song. Both truly incredible cover versions that Judas Priest makes all their own!

The first concert I ever attended was Judas Priest and Iron Maiden in 1981. I was 14. Still a fan after all these years. They have a vast catalog, Biz! My suggestion would be "Victim of Changes" from the Unleased in the East - Live in Japan album.

You have only just scratched the surface here Biz. This is commercial Judas Priest. So much variety in their catalogue. Early albums like Sad Wings of Destiny and Stained Class have some classics and then you get into Screaming for Vengeance and Defenders of the Faith and it is different altogether but still excellent and Rob Halford, the vocalist is THE METAL GOD!

Both Black Sabbath and Judas Priest are from The Midlands region of England and from the same town, Birmingham. During WWII Birmingham was a steel producing city. Look up Rob Halford talking about growing up hearing the steel hammers pounding Listen to Metal God and imagine the steel hammer pounding the rythmn. Steel was the only career opportunity Tony Iomi worked in the steel mill and this is where he lost tips of his fingers. He had to tune his guitar way down because it hurt his fingers. At the time bands played in standard tuning but due to Iomis low tunig Black Sabbath's sound was more dark. This tuning was suited for Ozzy's vocal range. Then came Judas Priest with studded leather looks with faster riffs and dystopian future themed songs

Judas priest say they're heavy metal, but in the early days I think I'd call it heavy rock, in any case I only followed them until about 1986, when the reality of life took over and I needed to start thinking about other things than sex drugs and rock and roll. They are one of the best though.
