I found it a little to clean. The later version was too sparsely populated and uncluttered. The combination of the two would be dead on

the vehicle design and execution is actually some of the best work i can think of.

This is probably because this all takes place in a future beyond the 2000AD comics. MC1 has been largely settled down, and crime is not nearly what it used to be. The Current Dredd is a Clone, and they did try to make more than one again. So, you get Rico (that just never works out well) again. Anyway the JD and Dredd are much less hardcore because they don't have to be. In fact, things keep getting functionally better more civilized over time. I would argue that the 2012 movie "Dredd" takes place before the Comics and the 1995 Judge Dredd takes place well after the 2000AD comics. But timeline issues keep me from trying to make that stick. And I have no good idea where the IDW Judge Dredd comics fit in. But could be an alternate time line that starts from roughly the middle point to the 2000AD comics but then deviates into its own thing.

The new movie with Karl Urban was the exact opposite. The movie and script was somewhat better, but the look and feel of the postapocalyptic city was crap.

That has as much validity as saying the most underrated Tool song. It was a mainstream release and well-received.

Yea, Karl Urban nailed it. Both are great movies. Would really love to see Urban put the helmet back on and make another one. Got real Cyberpunk-esk vibes from the remake.

The comic was a massive comedic satire in itself which I think this movie picked on quite nicely. Urban's is very much darker and edgier and a bit more grounded, the comic never took itself as seriously as that

This may of felt like a comedy but this nailed the dick head personality Judge Dredd had in the comics. I can easily believe this would be the same Judge Dredd that would chase down a 14 year old boy for missing his std check up and still kill the kid even though the kid broke no laws.

Um, Dredd at the start of the film said suicide was legal.

I just imagine judge Dredd going up to the body that committed suicide, brings them back to life, and then sentences them to life in the iso cubes lol

To be fair, Dredd doesn't murder, they're fully legal executions. That's part of being a Judge, you're allowed to use any level of force to fit the crime, and Dredd is a very by-the-book Judge. He just pretty much always takes the maximum allowed penalty option.

@@kedolan4992 most people don't understand that part. Much like the DC police and secret service firing into protesters in January... It is not murder because the law says it's not. So long as they justify what they did, it was simple self defense. Judge dredd has lots of experience with repeat criminals. He has decided that criminals will repeat. Therefore he uses the harshest possible option... Either extended prison terms or termination... To prevent repeat offenses.

@@lumberluc Well, there is one theory that I saw that somewhat fits the sci-fi feel. The ammo isn't a bullet like we use today. Its a material that can change its properties so when you ask for an ammo type, it just modifies the material into something that fits. You need a lethal shot? Just a chunk of metal like a bullet. You need to stun someone? A blunt and malleable material that deforms easier. Need a grenade? the material becomes a chemically unstable mix that explodes on impact.

meh never read the comic so had no expectations.....best way to be and loved this movie.

@@FingerinUrDaughter To be fair, yes, Dredd was obviously NOT being fair, but he was following the strict interpretation of the law. It was supposed to be a film where he 'learns' about the nuance of NOT following the rules by the strict letter of the law. But the film kinda failed. Sure it veered away from the comic, but that COULD have been a very cool story arc, about a judge who, having seen injustice when the law is enforced without context or compassion, changes his mind and tries to be a better judge. The subplot of Rob Schneider's character was supposed to steer Dredd into making that change of heart. But the movie was weirdly chopped short, like they missed filming a bunch of the third act or something.

The Dredd movie was well made but I didn't find it enjoyable. The city didn't feel right and the entire plot taking place inside that big building was boring. I think that would have worked a lot better if it had been the last 2 episode of a Dredd TV show that lead Dredd to that place.

They each have their ups and downs. Urban was a better Dredd and told a better story of a time earlier in Dredd's career, evidenced by the fact that Anderson is still a rookie and this is their first time meeting (they're longtime friends and co-workers in the comics). But Stallone's movie actually showed more of Megacity One and how the corruption of the system has affected the world. In the Urban movie, most of it is confined to a single apartment block, with only once chase sequence showing a little bit of Megacity One. In the Stallone movie, we get to see various parts and people from all walks of life and how things are in their world, making for much greater variety. Urban: Better Dredd, Stallone: Better Megacity One.
