They had plans to make it a trilogy; part two being based in Cursed Earth with the Fink Brothers as antagonists and part three based around the ‘Dark Judges’ with Judge Anderson being integral throughout obviously… and the more ‘2012 Judge Anderson’ the better I say! Fingers crossed we will get all of this in the series and / or possible films that might follow :)
When it comes to the movies, 1995 got the look and feel, 2012 got the attitude and grit. Hopfully the third up coming movie (unconfirmed but extremely wanted) gets both.
I loved both films, but Urban was incredible in the role. It's a shame the box office numbers hurt the chance of a sequel. I still watch Dredd often, so damn good.
The problem was that it was in 3D That's why I didn't go and see it even though I really wanted too. I had seen a couple 3D movies in the theater and it wasn't a great experience.
Another amazing and comprehensive synopsis of all Judge Dredd movies and comics. Dredd 2012 was the best sci-fi / action movie out of the two. Keep up the good content and videos.
I really liked Stallone as Dredd because his voice is very loud and demanding of attention also I preferred the aesthetic of his Dredd as compared to 2012, even though 2012 is much more cohesive as a story, it would have been better suited as an episode of a series than a movie whereas Stallone’s is crammed to make a coherent story
Sometimes you must become the Law. Sometimes you must defend yourself. Sometimes you must harm some, to protect others. Sometimes you must answer for your actions. I feel no guilt for what I've done.
I was born 1986. Here's the comics that were popular in 1986 Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns Alan Moore's Watchmen Frank Miller's Batman Year One Alan Moore's Saga Of The Swamp Thing Marv Wolfman's Crisis On Infinite Earths Chris Claremont's X-Men Marv Wolfman's The New Teen Titans John Bryne's The Fantastic Four John Bryne's Superman Man Of Steel Frank Miller's Daredevil Kevin Eastman & Peter Laird's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Frank Miller's Ronin
The Stallone film couldve been great if it stuck to one story line. Block War by itself wouldve been good film leading up to the Day the Law died. The Stallone tried to do to much fanservice and pull in various arcs. Still a watchable film. Im still hoping the Megacity one series gets picked up some time.
I AM THE LAW, oh, and the first movie had its shortcomings, who the fuck were Judge hunters, it should be SJS judges who questioned him and found he sleeps in the helmet, and the Angels weren't cannibals in the comic, it has its merits too, but would like to see it as a tv series as its such a sweeping epic story line you could call on a lotta material but make sure it was close to the comic
It's worth checking out the Judge Minty fan film on YT, it's accurate to the comicbook look of Dredd (especially the lawmaster bike) and an editor for 2000ad plays the part of Dredd in a cpl of scenes.
I liked the hammy stallone version of Dredd. Idk if it would have worked back then otherwise. But man. That new Dredd movie was incredible. It's like a passionate teenager wrote that movie, in a good way. It's what we wanted and expected from the Dredd universe.
Over the course of the decades Dredd has softened his stern, by the book, attitude as expressed here. He has championed mutant rights in MC1 against the desires of other senior judges, his thoughts on democracy have also softened as he looks back at his actions and those of the Judges over the years. In one important storyline Chief Judge Fargo, the father of the Judges and the Judge system, is found to have been kept alive in hibernation after receiving fatal wounds decades previously. His last words to Dredd on his death bed were that the Judges were never meant to be a permanent institution taking away peoples choices, they were simply the best option after the nuclear wars to gain control of an unruly population. Something else a lot of people forget is that judges are given life extending drugs to keep them on the streets. Even though Dredd is, technically, in his 60's by now, his body, thanks to the drug, puts him physically nearer 50. The drug though cannot be used by Psi-Judges like Cassandra Anderson as it impedes their psi skills and so she ages normally.
Good review mostly except he resides in Mega City One not Two. Mega City One is the majority of the US East Coast and MC 2 the West Coast with Texas City in the South
As much as I liked 'Dredd' and Karl Urban as an Actor, the Helmet just looked kinda silly on him. I don't know if it's the design of the helmet, or that he has a head or lower jaw that's too small, or that he insisted on the AVGN face, but one can't deny that Stallone has the more convincing Dredd head. It's a minor complaint, but that's why I would like another actor or at least different helmet design for a series, bc the child-in-a-halloween-costume-look makes it hard for me to take him seriously.
The important part that a lot of people miss is the reason for the massive unemployment. It's less that the people living in Megacity 1 are desperate and more that their jobs have been replaced by automation. megacity 1 is a post-scarcity society and the system gives them a UBI, however, the system provides no outlets for the people working there. Humans need an activity or else they start acting weird. In the case of the citizens of Megacity 1, they easily turn to crime just because the criminal activities make them feel that they're doing something and thus become people again. Judge Dredd is double social commentary. the obvious part is about the dangers of police with unchecked power, the more subtle part is how people will react when they feel superfluous. Just giving them UBIs just secures stability in their life. It also removes their self-worth unless they've something, anything to do other than staring at the wall.
I plan on doing a top 5 Judge Dredd 2000 AD strips on my channel, be great to have you on as a guest, let me know if you'd be up for that Marv - cheers
Aw man that show would be awesome! I wish someone could get an explanation about why, in the 1995 movie, all the unfinished clones get up from their pods to fight then immediately disappear from the movie 🤔
I think people were just happy it wasn't a goofy mess. The movie itself was alright but, there wasn't really anything unique (beyond name only) to Judge Dredd. Karl Urban is box office poison
I really don't get why everyone rags on Stallone's movie . It was a decent movie even if it wasn't super accurate to the comics . It had some humor in it , but so does the comic if you actually read it .
Regarding Anthrax... did you mean THRASH metal? Because "trash metal" is a bit harsh, don't you think? I mean, they're not Beethoven but come on, it's freaking Anthrax.
Here's my hot take if Stallone ever tries to do another dredd related anything I ain't watching it comedy should stay out of it 2012 was very on point to the tone it should have and not show his damn face it's like batman
Dredd is another great character from 2000ad and Carl Urban did a really great job really wanna see a dredd 2. Stallones dredd was pathetic dredd basically Clint Eastwood.
The only problem with the Sly version is his face was shown on screen. His helmet has been removed in the comics many times, they just use creative means to block his entire face during those times. The plot is also similarly bonkers as the comics. He also had his share of annoying sidekicks in the comics too.
@Jason Thompson There were times his face was shown, as per video mentioned. And there were stories where he had plastic surgery to hide from authorities during one of his "wrongfully" accused storylines.
@Jason Thompson Only because it has Stallone removing his helmet. If there's a way to edit and obscure his top face, it would have been true to the comics.
‘…older, silly ones.’ 2000AD started in 1972?!?!!!!? Don’t think so. Read this comic from prog. 86 up to 500ish. 1977 first published, prog 1. Early 2000AD had the best stories and characters. Dredd- Block mania, the Apocalypse War, Judge Death, Cal, psi-Anderson. ABC warriors, Strontium Dog, Nemesis, Slaine, Rogue Trooper, Ro-busters… to name but a few. Read the early comics for a better understanding, better than the ‘expert’ doing the commentary. He states that early comics were for ‘kids’! No shit. That’s what comics were before they got all pretentious.
Can’t believe it’s been 9 years since Dredd 2012. I was blown away by that movie, it was hectic as hell! So intense and grim, truly Dreadful, pun intended 🤘☠️
I saw it in theatres in 3D. Almost didn’t because the 1st trailer I watched on it made it look like a mindless action flick then I saw a beautiful trailer with the “in for the kill” song and gave it a shot… Glad I did, incredible movie on the big screen in 3d
No. Punisher had his whole family killed by a gang before his very eyes and thus became The Punisher/Frank Castle/ Man You Don't Want To Fuck With. The Punisher does not give a single F for the law.
At 0:40 Mega City One is on the east coast of the former United States. Mega City Two is on the west coast, and Texas city is in the former state of Texas.
Take the 1995 Dredd movies sets and put Karl Urban's 2012 Dredd in them and you would have perfection. The only issue I have with the incredible Urban Dredd is that they didn't have enough money to spend on sets or CGI so we got instead a MC1 that looked like downtown LA:(
