When one thinks of the great judges of Yore, certain names stand out above the rest. Names like Judge Harold T. Stone. Judge Judith Sheindlin. Judges Wapner, Mathis, and Joe Brown. Judge Reinhold, Judge Dredd, and Mike Judge all bear remembering. But towering over these colossal judicial minds stands one man, one legend so interwoven into the fabric of modern-day jurisprudence you’d be remiss not to pay him homage. And that man’s name was Roy Damn Bean. That’s right - Judge Roy Bean - to be exact. The law west of the Pecos is known for serving up both justice as well as tasty beverages from his courtroom/saloon known as the Jersey Lilly located in a little fart of a town in west Texas known as Langtry. All rise! Court is now in session on this newest OVERRULED edition of Bloody Beaver Podcast!
Excellent article by Marshall Tremble I referenced for this episode

In 1975 I was in a school play about the judge. I played a young naive cowboy that accidentally shot a hole thruogh a portrait of Miss Lilly and was on trial facing hanging. It included the bit about habeas corpus. Got best actor that year. Good memories.

@@WildWestExtravaganza Wanted to share this with you, but not for public comment really. (On the run, no time to edit, please forgive any typos.) Best Regards - Read w/o any idea of Judgemental - This Narrator has some real potential. I would offer a suggestion that would maintain His, the Channel's, and the content's essence of that which defines the line between the (really successful from the potentially mildly successful of Hosts, Channels, Shows, Writers, etc of Media's, print, audio, or video.) This is an energy, a feeling experience, of that which is a particular combination of: (that defined as class, a particular kind of class, and it includes the ingredients of a confidence, polish, accuracy, hip, timing and delivery, and that value of the Higher Mind perspective, that offering the most positive of energies, and a social gift of knowing: "It isn't what you say, but how you say it", an example: There's such value in the what use to be known as "Social Grace", that which use ti define gentlemen and ladies, that polish of "Charm School" all of which means, Knowing when and how to make a reference, deliver a morsel of wit, or a point that would not be appropriate in particular company. The point I intend to communicate is, it is far wiser to find the words to deliver the point that is not specific or blatant, for if the listener needs handholding, they wouldn't find the humor in it nor are they the target audience that defines success, in numbers or in revenue. Class never goes out of favor, and it is just so much more hip aka that "Classy Cool", the magnet that attracts the largest mass of people, attention, and the desires. Understand? Discernment: This was fine, with a number of areas that were good, couple very good, but it falls short of "Polished" due to the unnecessary fractions of references that are sorta locker room. In reference to (Stiff neck) Not necessary to actually state what is an obvious reference. It's funnier w/o the actual defining of the reference. Reference is fine. No Judgemental, merely Discernment and a recognition of the real potential. It is offered for consideration ... from someone with a degree in Journalism and experience in Entertainment and Production. Let's call it: "Fine tuning for Success"

I visited the jersey lilly in 2001...population was 13...all related as i understood it. The store there was one beautiful store. You can smell the fresh leather as soon as you walk in. Out back i saw a bunch of old junk vehicles close to the cliff drop off at the border...my first thought was "The hills have eyes" lol. I am not a paranormal kinda dude...but i am here to tell ya...you can "feel" the presence of the spirit of judge roy as you enter the jersey lilly. The wind made different sounds inside as it did outside.I stood at the 4-6ft wooden plank bar and it just felt different. Before leaving the saloon...i double checked to make sure i still had my wallet....and again before leaving town.

We could use more of Beans justice. Having ppl work off their fines. Maybe street sweeping, filling potholes, painting the saloon....tie em to a tree would save a lot of money. Esp child molesters. As for leaving a man sitting on a horse under a hanging tree, the act of other horses moving on would by nature cause the hanging man's horse to instinctively follow.....I did stop in Langtry Tex. ( Always liked Neumann's betrayal of the judge ) . What surprised me was the size of the saloon, 6 people would have been crowded.

@@WildWestExtravaganza Intellectual Integrity requires one to admit that "white boys" or " Gringos" weren't the only people that owned slaves at that time in history. The Spanish, Mexican, Native, and Black people did as well, that's not even mentioning the practices of Central and South American cultures. Blacks owned Plantations and Slaves just as whites did, making your comment of "especially a white boy in the south" factually false. A partial history, is a False History. We can't get past racism, when people refuse to tell the entire truth, and Promote racism through a false history. That being said, I actually enjoyed listening...... to a point. I've always enjoyed works of Fantasy based on reality. Like a "good" Zombie movie, reality mixed with Pure Bullshit.

My husband and I love your channel and appreciate your diligence in research, which I realize does not always provide pronunciations. My qualifications for my knowledge in this matter is that I am a fifth generation Texan and know a lot about Texas and our unique language. In this case, the name of Pecos town and river is pronounced with the “e” having along “a”sound, the “c” having a “k” sound, the “o” having a long “o” sound with the “c” having an “s” sound. I know your video on Judge Roy Bean will not be alter for the correct pronunciation of Pecos, but in any future stories surrounding that area, you can provide the Texan pronunciation. I guess, when you live in a place you can call it whatever you want. Thanks for the stories.

Law West of the Pecos, Pecos is pronounced [ PAY-CUSS ] . One of the main reasons that 30 something men married teenage girls was , the man was to be financially established for the family of the prospective bride to allow the marriage. There were additional factors of course , such as, a teenage girl wasn't able to contribute to the financial support of the family the way a teenage boy, who could be hired out to labor on area farms, ranches, etc. could. It was a very different time then. As usual a very informative and entertaining look at the history of the wild west, keep up the good work.

Man your stuff is frikn' is fantastic! I laughed all the way through this episode. Judge Roy Bean is one of my favorite people historically speaking. The stuff he pulled off and got away with it is amazing. The judge was a good man who did a lot of good for a lot of people despite his many 'irregularities.' I would like to say that he would fit in perfectly here in Chicago but that would be a lie. I think the judge was faking it when pretending to be all hard; In reality he was a softy with a hard shell. Here in Chicago the cruelty is very real.

@The Wild West Extravaganza, Josh, you might want to watch the 1950's short lived TV series, Judge Roy Bean West of The Pecos on Tuby. The actor's source notes would be interesting to get a hold of. BTW the "a" in "Pacos," is "a" long a sound. And the "o" is a long "o" sound. You have great content. But when my ears hear "Pacos" sounding short, it's like hearing Mrs. Biden mispronounce "Bodegas," as "Bo degas."

We had a way of taking care of the "homeless" There was a law against being a vagrant, it described a vagrant as a person with no money on them basically in legalese. We would arrest the vagrant and bring them before the justice of the peace (he was the janitor at the hospital who served in that capacity, he had no education beyond the 8th grade). He would find the person guilty and fine them $100.00. He would release them with orders that the appear in court the next day a 1:00 PM with the fine or they would have to serve 30 days in jail at hard labor. We never saw a return of a vagrant as they all left town with their tails between their legs. Our JP was a good old fellow who, because of his build, he served as Santa on Santa Clause day. We called him Archie Clause behind his back. We need Archie Clause more today then ever, I think his justice would be welcome in say, Portland...

Being a San Antonio native, you never hear it currently referred to as Beanville any longer. This area just south of downtown was referred to as this due to it being a predominantly Mexican American enclave of poor families that relied on beans as a major part of their diet. A derogatory term for poor Mexican American families or individuals was “Beaner’s.” This was used mainly by Anglos of the area to belittle their fellow residents of San Antonio.

just for the hell of it, how about some information on G.E. Lemmon, the founder of the little town in South Dakota that I was born and raised in. He sounds like quite a guy, this town is on the state line of the Dakota's and about 13 miles north of where the dude in The Revenant met his grizzly bear and walked his way into history.
