It's not clear that "young" five actually have "old" five the correct calculations. He said he did, but I don't totally believe him. Though it seems like time travel in Umbrella Academy is not circular, so there may be a ton of branches of the timeline with various different scenarios.
@Swell Entertainement: Good analysis. My favorite characters, and they dominate the show, Vanya and Number 5. I like Klaus: I hope he gets more powers like in the comics!
Elliot deserved better this season. He adapts to the siblings' craziness, lets them eat his food, sleep and have sex in his bed, and lets them live in his house rent free, only to get tied up and killed for his trouble. 😭💔
I genuinely felt bad for Elliot in a way I rarely do for side characters. He wasn't built up as even a potential target, he's a total recluse who wouldn't even be the typical weakness for heroes (not that UA are heroic by any stretch), and he deserved none of what happened to him.
I feel like no one is talking about the fact that we learned Grace was a smart and strong-willed scientist this season, which makes the fact that Reginald based Mom off her but made her a mild-mannered subservient 50's housewife so much worse. He couldn't get the real woman for whatever reason, so he used her likeness to create the version of her he wanted. That had me *hollering* at the screen
@Domagoj Čović I hear if you keep talking shit about us feminists infront of a mirror in the dark, one of us will materialise out of nowhere and force you to denounce masculinity while dyeing your armpit hair xxx
I love how the last episode starts with Hargreaves being a douche at Ben's funeral and is basically like "yeah maybe if you guys were a better team he wouldn't be dead" and the last scene is Ben alive with a better team
yeah exactly!! And! Everyone else had had time in between the last apocalypse and now to recuperate and get their bearings. Five on the other hand ended up basically going out of the frying pan into the fire. He's been going through at least a week of non-stop stress dealing with an impending existential threat, as well as being pushed around by his superiors whom he hates. The boy is starting to run on fumes at this point and is taking it out on those around him. I'm not saying I agree but I do understand😅
I felt cheated by season 2 there was not enough of AJ Carmichael. Why introduce a fish man android character and only have him in a couple of episodes. Other than that I enjoyed this season lol
Honestly, that's what his appearance in the comics is like too. They don't go super in-depth into his character. So I think that was kind of a stylistic choice to keep it more similar to the comics. Like a bunch of weird shit just happened and we aren't going to get answers anytime soon. I do find him really interesting tho. I could have used more of him too.
tbh carmichael didn't appear that much in the comics either. He was Five's superior, showed up to force 10yo/older Five to fight against his older/younger self who had went rogue while on the JFK task (in the end Allison was the one who killed JFK) then 10yo Five killed him & ate the goldfish. Stylish design but not much else.
Season 1: Luther going on about the moon in seemingly every conversation Season 2: Diego trying to save JFK Season 3 : What will Allison be obsessed with next season, I wonder?! 🤔😉
I really want her to obsess about her daughter, then with her not existing, and then obsess about Luther because he likes her more than everybody else. I wanna see this become toxic, and Allison turning into a villain.
Okay so. We know Diego can manipulate bullets weapons etc. so why didnt he try moving the bullet killing JFK. Or better yet. You know that weird magic bullet theory as people were confused about how it hit. I think it would have been cool if Diego tried to maneuver the bullet but still ended up killing him as he tried too late. Hence leading people to make up that magic bullet theory and why it moved weird.
Diego can only manipulate metal objects of a certain size "around him". The only way he could use it to save JFK, if he was right there next to him. Like super close
It's funny, in the comics JFK dies because Allison posed as the first lady and rumored him into being shot in the head (yes she can do that she's VERY op in the comics) so in a sense having the magic bullet theory be related to the Hargreeves kids' powers isn't that much of a stretch.
It feels like people are forgetting that the thesis of this whole show is that these are all emotionally broken children who are making bad choices related to trauma. Their father saw their journey as "put aside your humanity, be objective, stop making the bad choices, and be smarter than you are vulnerable." but that is ultimately the mindset that destroyed their emotional maturities. They have these images of heroes over them, but they aren't those people. They aren't super heroes by nature, they're children with powers. The show is a case study on the fallout of emotional neglect. They don't stop being the humans that they are just because they learned a lesson. Luther is emotionally impulsive and gullible because he spent all his time, even in to his adult life, without relationships, taking the words of one man as gospel. He never really had to deal with negative emotions because he never gave himself the personhood to do so. Of course he would listen to whichever stern authoritative Five is talking to him, because he' a non-skeptical person. Of course he reacts dramatically to his emotional impulses, because he's never felt any of these ways before. And of course he cares about pleasing his stern authoritative new boss and doesn't want to risk his place as somebody's #1 to fight another apocalypse. Diego's Jfk obsession isn't him "fighting the plot" he didn't even know about the apocalypse before he let it destroy his sanity. He was latching on to the most important thing in the world at the time because he needs to be important. He's broken. When Diego starts associating the apocalypse with the assassination, it is clearly portrayed as him being irrational. It's why he takes such pride in being scouted by the organization, because it means he's high on the food chain of importance. He levels out when he feels like he's doing important things. The show is also constantly portrayed by unreliable narrators. Five isn't the authority on time travel, he's constantly wrong about a lot of things, and it's pretty clear that the show's rules on time travel are "time changes it doesn't split, there's no back to the future disappearing, paradoxes are a joke that we literally explain as a medical condition, don't worry about it" but Five, in all his arrogance, has to feel like he knows all the rules to everything, so he wastes their time doing something dumb. These siblings are not who they need to be. If they were, this show would be over pretty quick. The villains are portrayed as, more or less, pretty average people. It's about the recovery process. It's not about power levels and tactics.
Dude we know, but like, we're just saying, they do be sometimes stupid and it's just fun(? Kinda for me I guess idk why) to like analyse their incredibly sometimes bad and/or stupid decisions Idk it's just fun so yeah, good day, thank you for coming to my TED talk
I honestly hate how 5’s siblings were treating him this season. They were taking the apocalypse so lightly after everything five did to try to stop it. They were blaming him for getting them scattered across time when he could have left them to all die and just save himself but he didn’t. They were also treating him like he did understand how hard their lives are when he saw his siblings die 3 times and got stuck alone in the apocalypse for 45 years. In season 3 they can’t really blame five for the messed up timeline since he found a way for them to get back to their timeline and stop both of the apocalypses if they just made the time limit that was set on the briefcase.
Ive thought about this a lot, five didn’t cause anything, he only tried to stop it. All of the siblings blamed him constantly and it seemed a bit ridiculous
This family is so bad at communicating! None of them listen to any of the others and Five is very bad at explaining why the others should go along with his plan. I don't think half of them actually fully understood that their loved ones would DIE in the apocalypse and so it should be their top priority to maintain the timeline and stop the apocalypse, even if you they to leave their loved ones in a shitty situation. It's like no one thinks for more than one second in this show, except for Five- but he can't figure out how to explain himself properly so the others are just loose cannons hahaha
I think my highlight for the whole season was 5 going ape shit on the board of directors with a fire axe. He didn't want to take the job originally, but you can tell he absolutely enjoyed it. He's dark. I like that. My favorite character arc was Vanya's arc, however. I felt like we really got to see how she'd grow as a person when she finds an environment where she's included, and that she can forge deep emotional ties to people who simply accept her.
@Domagoj Čović Dave's uncle in the dinner scene was exactly the same. In fact the writers could have very easily just had Carl be Dave's uncle, and the story could have been slightly richer because of it.
@Domagoj Čović It was kind of a whip lash. He went from a family man with a pretty good heart to a generic bad guy. I really thought he was going to force himself on Vanja, but he didn't and I admired him for it. That said, I think that is one of the main themes tho.
my most unpopular umbrella academy opinion is that I kind of love luther. I think he’s an overhated himbo, and ppl seem to ignore how abuse and daddy issues have shaped him.
I honestly really enjoyed him working for Ruby. He finally got to be his own person and we got to see him in his own element. He strives without his siblings but I would like to see him interact with Vayna more positively. I think they could have a very interesting dynamic.
I agree, even in Season 1, I liked Luther, and he was just coping with his abusive childhood by embracing it, and denying that it happened. He shows tremendous growth over the Season 2, accepting that Allison is married to Ray, apologising to Vanya for locking her up, and having a hilarious dynamic with the two Fives. 💕😻
I don't hate him, but I don't love him either. I thought the being in love with your sister thing was kinda fucked, but hey, trauma. I do like that he stood up for himself to Reginald for once.
@@atticcouch him choosing to work for Ruby was just Luther substituting his dad. "Ruby kills the killer of JFK? He must be a decent guy. Oh look! He's also dad's age."
I think their handling of Klaus's ptsd was really good, mainly in the paint shaker scene. I have ptsd and I liked how he didn't immediately start crying like I've seen in other shows, he just dissociated and grounded himself. also fun to see that Klaus had the same main trauma response as me lmao, go freezes!
It is so funny I have seen exactly one episode. In that one episode I was like Vanya and that chick are in love. They built that relationship very well.
Agreed, I loved how Vanya grew and developed this season, and how she embraced her bisexual identity. Kudos to Ellen Page and Marin Ireland for believably portraying Vanya and Sissy's romance, which gets you rooting for them both! 👭💘
Ikr? I don't usually care for amnesia plots, but the fact that for the majority of the season she didn't even remember Harold/Leonard and Sissy was her first great romance just filled me with glee.
Allison F so fucking this. It also completely deviated from her character arc last season and in the graphic novel....... the choice to make her character gay this season (oh I’m sorry, bisexual) was CLEARLY agenda driven.
It sort of seemed like everyone's powers were amped up in that soviet invasion flash-forward scene, and I was waiting all season for that to make sense given they only had like a week to work out what was going on. Particularly Diego, very suddenly being able to *stop* bullets in the last episode seemed to come out of nowhere, seeing as any other time bullets were flying, he never even tried to redirect them in any obvious way.
Yeah and the fact they never even mention it, like if he did just discover he could do that (which is unlikely, given he's been in a lot of situations where there are bullets flying at him, so why would it just happen then) he never mentions it.
@@mayhapsvenotcaleb4576 notice how he is never shot? maybe he is redirecting but its minor so it doesn't take a lot of effort while the big fight with the commission is a load of bullets and a hugely different direction change (a near right angle away) so that's why that scene was emphasized.
I feel like they pulled lyla’s abilities out of their ass at the last moment. It would have been better if they at least hinted at the fact she had powers throughout the season so when it was finally revealed we could have a “oh that’s what they meant” moment but nope, they just basically said “hey what if we just give her powers for absolutely no reason?!”
I think the worst decision of the whole of season 2 is sissy's choice to go back and write a note!! She caused the end of the world! If she hadn't done it then Vanya wouldnt have been arrested and wouldnt have been tortured etc!
true, but idk if i were in her position i don't think i could leave my life behind without any goodbyes or explanations. a bad desicion, absolutely, but a very human one
Precisely, I thought nothing of it the first time I watched it, but on a rewatch, I've realised that had Ben not been able to calm down Vanya, Sissy's simple note could have potentially been responsible for World War III, and Vanya's causing of yet ANOTHER apocalypse! 😮
I feel like u have the time travel wrong...the time travel isn’t cyclical, it’s more like a tree. The Commission have to maintain the roots, not (all) the branches. They do, however, have to maintain the trunk as well which is Reginald Hargreeves. Seems his adoption of the Ones of October (yes, that is what I call them) is the core of everything that happens in the timeline because him being an alien completely fucked the timeline
I think the OG commission (or The Handler)wanted the apocalypse to happen just so they wouldn't have to spend so many resources dealing with time travelers. One was enough to ruin their whole operation!
@@caprileon3857 The commission have to make sure the roots are prim and proper to allow the tree to fully grow. The branches on the other hand extend from the tree and by part are the branching timelines. The overall trunk is Reginald Hargreeves in this case, so keeping him alive preserves every timeline, the UA just jumped into their direct timeline which is the SA
Ditto, there was an extremely high possibility that Claire wouldn't even exist after the changes to the timeline, but I was grateful that at least Allison brought her up towards the end, if only briefly. ♥️
I don’t know, I feel like if they kept bringing up Claire it’d just be annoying that in the end we never got a chance to see her. It’d be like if Checkhov’s gun never went off. So -1 point for realism but +1 for efficient story telling
Charlie Dalencour sure but completely overlooking a character like that, since she was somewhat of a plot point in season one just makes it feel like the producers forgot about her
well, it has been a year or two for most of them so it makes sense for Allison to be trying to live her life without bringing up her daughter who is nonexistent at the moment.
I feel like they forgoed some of Klaus’ development in favour of meme-ifying him more. Yeah he was the breakout hit from the last season, but making him constantly spew sass and gifable one liners (read dramatic moment when both of his siblings may have died in the penultimate episode) detracted from the rounded character they set out at the beginning
I think he had really good, heartbreaking moments with Dave. I wish they had expanded on that a little bit more, and maybe a little more serious moments with Ben. I'm hoping he'll have more of that in season 3.
zombiedrea Yeah, the Dave stuff felt very in character and gave him some depth and I hope there’s more (descendant in 2019 maybe?) but like in the video it felt like Klaus was being cruel to Ben for no conceivable reason. I also kinda found the siblings’ treatment of Klaus’ addiction troubling. They all fully encourage his drinking habit- Allison goes “I’m not going to be an enabler” and then like 5 seconds later she’s bringing out the good booze for them to drink lol. Not so much a complaint cuz I can see them doing that irl. I did like the season overall though!
I loved the scene in the hair salon with Vanya, Allison, and Klaus. Klaus explaining all of their shitty decisions and Allison and Luther's weird relationship to an increasingly bewildered Vanya was hilarious.
Why is no one talking about Klaus probably radically changing the music industry for the next 60 years? How many bands did Klaus keep from going mainstream because he stole the hooks to their songs? Did Klaus stop Beyoncé from becoming Beyoncé by stealing the name Destiny’s Children? We probably won’t get this answered in season 3 but I need to know.
Kristin 11 I don’t think so. If that were the case then the Umbrella Academy always went back to the 1960s but we know that there presence in the 1960s caused a Nuclear War. Also we know for a fact that the Umbrella Academy’s influence in the 1960s did change the timeline (The Sparrow Academy/Ben being alive). I don’t know maybe the music industry was unaffected but I’m willing to bet otherwise.
@@TBoring yeah seems to make sense. I would have thought of it as some sort of pardoxon. For example: As soon as time travel exists it will have always existed.
Lol well atleast one of them is a glowing cube (or has control over a glowing cube) so probably not. But I mean I not willing to give up hope entirely...that would be pretty cool.
I wonder if next season since they didn’t get adopted by Hargreeves, will we meet their biological mothers and see those dynamics? That would be interesting since I think we only met Vanya’s mom.
I had 2 big take aways from this seaons. 1: Ben has apparently been attached to Klaus since the day he died without a way to communicate with anyone for years at a time, including Klaus because his powers barely functioned when he was high. He has also aged in ghost form from teen to adulthood. He seems to have the least amount of trauma, perhaps because death freed him from Hargreaves. So I am very curious what bangs Ben will be like. 2: Alison could have grabbed a bullhorn and changed the phrase "I have a dream" in MLK speech to "I heard a rumor" and speed the Civil Rights movement up by like 30 years. The fact that she was willing to interfere with history but not enough to make the most meaningful impact was frustrating.
Ray is perfect. I wanted him to come with them. I love Herb. He better be in Season 3 a lot. He's a little dumpling. Diego is soooooo dumb, but I do like him this season over last. It's probably just bc David Castaneda is so hot. Klaus was my favorite last season, but he really let me down this season. Ben deserved better (and so did Elliot).
The only thing that seemed silly to me was how it was kind of the same overall plot all over again. They are all living their own lives, five comes back, tells them about the apocalypse in __ days, nobody really listens to him and continues on their own stories with their own priorities, but eventually their priorities merge and save the day. It was too close not to be on purpose though so it probably means something that I'm not seeing lol (Also sad that Hazel was just gone in the first few minutes of the first episode, hoping to see more of him, and the lack of violin with Vanya was annoying, kind of understandable with the memory loss but they could have still worked that in, it's a big part of her character)
I️ totally agree! I️ thought this season we were going to see more of their time as kids fighting crime/ their relationship dynamics back then instead of the same rehashed storyline.
I'm not saying every single part was the same, but yeah, the overall points I mentioned were? I just thought that after the first season, they might take 5 seriously but Diego couldn't stop trying to help JFK, Luther was obsessed with finding Allison and ignoring the problem by going back to the fight club, Klaus just wanted to talk to Dave, and Allison was trying to fix racism. They all ignored 5 and just let him deal with the problem until a lot later on when it started to affect their priorities more and they were forced to get involved. I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it, I Ioved season 2, but I didn't expect the show to hit those same beats again.
I actually enjoyed it. Because even though it started with their own lives, the result was much different for a reason. Vanya actually had room to grow as a person and as a member as the family, Luther is getting over his daddy issues, Diego has lost his grudge from the number system, and Allison was fighting with her own power. They falter in some of these things from time to time, but all in all they stood by it. Now, these people actually come together and act like a family. This is a major change that actually makes them win for once! Mostly. I agree it was similar at first, but became a much more different and ended very differently. Just my little ol opinion
@@Joawlisdoingfine That makes sense! Like I said, it had to have been on purpose since it was so similar and there was probably more meaning to it that I was missing. I guess I was just mostly annoyed they didn't listen to 5 again and get down to business, which was exactly like season 1 lol
I'm confused about Ben's portrait in the last ep of Season 2. Mostly due to the fact that we saw a similar portrait of Five in Season 1 (painted due to his disappearance), so does that mean the Ben we saw with emo hair is NOT portrait!Ben. Are they twins? I need answers!
Wait you're right. Why does the Ben on the painting look so different from emo Ben? Also the placement of the painting (The original one of Five indicating a missing child) is odd.
I just kinda assumed that Reginald isn't the type to let Ben wear his hair like that for his official portrait. You know that dude is hoity-toity enough to make Ben gel it up for a day lol
Maybe Ben has a twin in this timeline and the Ben we know still died because that was an inevitable event on the time line (same as the end of the world supposedly was)? And the “emo Ben” is actually the twin and not the Ben we know.
or the new team didn't lose anybody, so the painting was of the team leader and not a memorial. If they didn't lose anyone then there's no need for a memorial painting.
I'm very glad you called out the people who have... creepy behaviours towards Five. I mean, I'm the same age as Aidan Gallagher and I still think it's weird because of his little 13 year old body, it's a weird subject but at least leave him alone for the sake of the actor
It never really got resolved. He never redeemed himself nor was he condemned for creating a completely bullshit cult because he's a narcissistic hedonist. I wonder if the writers were making a joke of that, considering the cultists disbelieving when he says he's a fraud (which, I haven't been in any cults, but didn't seem remotely believable), but the alternative is that it's a major plot hook for season 3. For the most part, though, Klaus doesn't grow an inch from where he got to by the end of season 1. If anything, it felt like he traded his alcoholism for being abusive to Ben, which, again, he was never punished for nor apologized about.
Patrick Lewis and that’s the reason I cannot stand him. It doesn’t help that the rabid fans keep praising him and revering him like he’s some hilarious and benevolent deity
Patrick Lewis I actually assumed the cult was just a set up for season 3, even with the boyfriend going to Vietnam, I expect him to be in charge of the cult in Season 3 and maybe provide them a place to stay.
@@wmascolin It very well may be, but in season 2 in isolation, Klaus doesn't grow over the course of several years and it's hard to like him because of that. I do hope Destiny's Children is a part of S3, definitely. I also worry, though, given they picked up a hitch-hiking serial killer.
Personally, I've just decided that all the weird timeline insanity confusions is just a result of 5 not knowing how the timeline works. So he was probably just being safe by making sure his past self made it to 2019 because he didn't wanna risk being wiped from existence.
The common theory about Luther is that his power is improved by confidence. Lila straight up says "you gotta believe in yourself," as she's wooping his ass with his own super strength.
everyone in the comments hating sissy for making the incredibly human decision to leave a goddamn note. it would've been so out of character to leave with absolutely no goodbyes. not the smartest thing, no, she knew they might be caught for it. sissy did nothing wrong!
I agree, it's a very human reaction. Sissy didn't want to leave Carl, as abusive as he was, without at least letting him know what she and Harlan were doing, so you can't blame her entirely for this.
@@ostkaka8232 I don't know why but when I found out that their Swedish was so bad (and that so far the Swedish fans I've seen have been amused by it, not offended) it's just made me love them more.
The reason that they kept “messing up the timeline” is because they don’t think that they are going back to 2019 so they are just living their life in the 60s
Ben's decision to take advantage of Klaus' body. Complicated choice. Understandable that he was so overwhelmed w/ having a body again, understandable that he was in love with the girl and would never have any other opportunity to interact with her. Understandable that he wanted to make sure that Klaus' made it to the meet up as to 1) not be left behind and further screw up the timeline, and 2) not mess things up for his siblings. Not understandable that he continued to fight to stay in Klaus' body when he had arrived at the meeting spot, fighting so forcibly against Klaus' will that Klaus literally threw up in order to eject Ben from his body, because, yes, Ben probably just wanted to continue to experience the world again, but that is a very selfish reason to straight up violate another person, and go against their will, as if it's less important than his own/ I would like to state that i love Ben, and absolutely agree that he is very distracting indeed, and is, like, the best among the family, but also, this: bad decision. In my opinion.
Klaus is my favorite, but I'm not mad that you rated his choices low. He did make bad choices. That's kinda the point of him, and why so many people love him. And he gets called out for making bad choices by Ben, Five, even himself.
I watch this show for the super powers im not saying i want the whole show to be just them kicking butt with their powers but id atleast like to see them using them more. Most of them only used them twice. In the first episode then again in the last episode.
I kinda like that it doesn’t use their superpowers a lot tbh. I feel like sometimes things rely on them too much and this show is about a hell of a lot more than just that
The whole point of the show was actually to show that their not superheroes but just people who happen to have powers who were forced to be heros though none of them wanted that.
I hated Luther in season 1, but I really liked and enjoyed his charcter this season especially the more the show moved on, I don't understand why people still hate him so much 💔
I can understand Allison Hargreeves not wanting to use her power a lot because she has a strong moral center she knows that her using powers too much or for the wrong purpose could easily make herself a monster. Take the Purple Man, the same type of powers but the evilest villain ever.
Allison Hargreeves is the only somewhat well-adjusted character of this entire show except her thing with Luther like for real girl...stop it he's your brother.
Season 2 was extremely frustrating because every character put their own needs before what they had to do. Fives frustration was understandable through and through. Diego’s hero complex will never not be annoying.
I liked that Vanya got a girlfriend well, but Sissy and her only knew each other for a month, and Sissy didn’t really have anything memorable about her or her personality.
Nunnie Nope, he’s trash. She said earlier in the show that she would never be able to leave him and be herself (even though she wanted to) because his brother is a cop. She felt imprisoned. Then she finally gets the guts to leave because he was threatening her son and she was dumb enough to leave a note. 😆👋🏻
@@LadyJenevia see I don't know, yeah he's a drunk and he threaten to send his kid somewhere but it was because he thought it would help. sissy was hiding money, sleeping with the babysitter and planned on running away with their kid.
aside from a few things i think this is pretty great assessment of their choices. the 'few things' are.. literally everything to do with klaus and ben. because klaus wasn't the only one who was an asshole this season (s;df;ds genuinely accidental rant ahead. i clearly haven't gotten this out of my system yet) ben isn't a soft perfect marshmallow - no matter how attractive he absolutely is. he's a hargreeves. he's an asshole. and he was horrible to klaus. like yeah klaus didn't treat ben great but /ben didn't treat klaus great either/. his attitude, the way he talks about klaus's relationship with dave as well as klaus's actions - which weren't "rekindling" attempts. they were "i need to save his life" attempts. and though they weren't executed well his intentions were actually selfless. but ben is pissed he can't stare at a girl he likes so he's a dick about his brother's real and literally life changing relationship. not that ben having a crush wasn't cute and all but he's dead. jill doesn't know he exists. there is literally no way for them to work (unless she dies). there's nothing that can come of staying around her. so like..stare at a girl i like and daydream vs. try to save the life of my past/future boyfriend even though it could ultimately end in us never meeting. not exactly on the same level. so while some of klaus's actions are selfish: this?? not one of them. this was a point where ben was being selfish. not only for what i literally just talked about but also for trying to demand klaus stay somewhere he clearly wasn't comfortable. the cult wasn't a fabulous idea but i do think it happened on accident and it spiraled out of control quickly. klaus doesn't like being surrounded by people - for 1. he's claustrophobic (hello mausoleum and motel closet) and for 2. the followers were literally acting like ghosts, the way they were to him in s1. him managing to stay sober doesn't mean the ghosts were any less terrifying in the 60s. it was just never talked about (and THAT is a writers mistake. it's like they completely forgot about klaus's powers for most of the season. they forgot about a lot of klaus related things actually and im gonna be pissed about it until s3 i'm sure lmfao) but my BIGGEST issue with ben, which is also one of my biggest issues with the entire season, is the possessions. the first time was an accident, neither of them knew that could happen, so it was whatever. but he does it again without klaus's consent at the light supper (which ends up being the final nail in the coffin of their Family Conversation because of the episode it caused) and clearly thinks nothing of it, and then threatens to do it /another/ time as soon as klaus lets his guard down. because klaus has already told him no several times. that's scary /and/ gross. and then he badgers/guilts klaus enough that he finally agrees to let ben possess him, for a short period of time. and there's a couple things that bother me about the stuff that happens next but the worst is that he gets to talk to jill.. and then refuses to give klaus his body back. klaus has to literally vomit him out (which is fucking disgusting) and ben thinks there isn't a single thing wrong with *gestures at all of this topic* and i'm partially pissed at ben for it but also the writers really made him like that huh. s1 ben was a dick but he cared about klaus's well-being on some level. s2 ben is like "klaus rights who?? what??" and i know they wanted to show their friendship disintegrating but jesus. christ. ALL THAT SAID - ben's scene with vanya inside the violin inside her mind broke my heart and all i could do was stare in like.. weird horror / sadness, between the fact that they really did such a thing. killing a ghost. and ben's speech; letting vanya know she's cared about and she isn't alone. "you're not a monster. you're my sister" I CANT. and while i wish he'd been able to have a proper goodbye with klaus i can see why they didn't give us that - or give klaus that - and i do like what they did, with ben's last words to him taking away guilt he knows klaus has been holding onto for 17+ years. there's a lot of theories on how that, along with ben being gone in general, is gonna fuck klaus up even more in s3 and i am both Ready and Not Ready At All lmfao And, even though i'm sure it's really obvious by now lmfao, my favorite main character is klaus. He was my favorite in s1 and remained so in s2 (though they definitely fucked him over some this season. however.. that could tie into his arc for s3. so. i'm holding out hope that the decisions the writers made will all mean something eventually). My favorite side character is.. harder to pick. There were a lot of ones to love this season. Dave, Ray, Sissy, Elliot, Lila. And Carmichael! It's so sad we didn't get more of him. I know he's comission so he's bad but... he goldfish sdfjsdl And I of course have watched the season.. a couple of times now actually. Because while I don't love everything about it there's so much that IS fantastic (like how it's generally in character and it's fun and the music choices are perfect) but also.. i waited too long for this season, with endless excitement, just to drown myself in the things i didn't like yknow?? That would suck - to let myself ruin my favorite show for me. Wrapping up this nonsense with saying again that every other character judgement was great. I really can't think of anything you said that didn't have me nodding my head over here. AND the video was overall entertaining - you have a way of presenting your opinions that's a lot of fun to watch, whether i agree with you or not, so thank you for sharing your takes with us!
I don't think it's that he adopted new kids (the parents of the children who he managed to successfully steal would have still been existent meaning it would be the same children) I think it's that he saw what a failure Umbrella Academy was and changed something, my personal theory on what he changed is that he showed them affection (see New Ben calling him "dad")
@@blah7983 I don't think he could have, he travelled to Earth before that so the time difference would be wack, and Ben was aged properly there, also it doesn't really change when the lady he was with died :)
@@hamstermain8327 I mean, he didn't chose those kids though, he went around and offered to parents cash and the parents decided to give him the children, and though your theory is fun it also misses that he doesn't know what country each of the kids come from, so he couldn't tell which places to avoid :)
Yes Exactly! Alyson has a daughter yet if you were new to the show and just started this season you wouldnt even know about her cuz she never mentioned her. Youd think oh i have a daughter in the future. Im not gonna step on any butterflies just so i can make sure nothing happens to her.
@Quilo Sky there's a difference between not mentioning her and showing no signs of missing her. Even a lingering glance on a mother and child or hearing the name Claire and then turning knowing in your sensible brain she isn't there, but feeling pulled to look anyway. In fiction there are a lot of ways to indicate lingering feelings of missing someone without it being a blatent long drawn out conversation with another character or even a "verbal" mention.
@Quilo Sky I have mixed feelings about it. Overall, I adored this season. And I HATE when time travel shows ignore problems like racisim or homophobia and I thought both were handled well. That being said, I can agree when I found a plot point lacking and this was a bit of a lack and fail.
Luther has had a lot of head trauma, I always thought a lot of his actions were based on him just not being able to think through consequences and come to the right conclusions
Every time they messed with something I'm the 60s like changing historical events or literally SEEING THEIR DAD I got so triggered like obviously the "present" you go back to is gonna be f**ked now. This applies to everyone except Vanya. I love her and I loved her story line this season!
I was watching this with someone else so when it finished with the Sparrow Academy my exact words were “oh, they Flashpoint-Ed it!” The look of confusion I got from that person was a joy to see. Considering Back to the Future seems to be their favourite movie I thought she’d understand the “don’t change the past” idea from time travel stuff.
Luther's reaction to Five asking him for help with the apocalypse was annoying but understandable. It's essentially like Vanya's "I don't deserve to live" reaction to remembering everything that she did in s1. He finally realized that he overestimated his authority and importance in s1 which led him to making very bad decisions and now he's just given up on trying to be their father's Number 1 because he knows the repercussions when he lets that get into his head and finally, he has a chance at a life where his every choice isn't made by Reggie. Like they pointed out, Diego's obsession with JFK stems from his hero complex because that's how Reggie fucked him up. Even when he thinks he's being a rebel, he's essentially just doing the exact thing that their father wanted for them when they were kids because deep down, he still yearns for that feeling of importance and worth because as a kid, he was constantly reminded that he was never good enough to be Number 1. 1963 was an opportunity for Allison at a normal life without the need to constantly manipulate everyone around her to her liking. In s1, she vowed to never use her powers again because she didn't like the person she became because of them and I love how that diner scene with the racist waiter showed us just how easily she could get consumed by the high of using her powers on other people. Like she said, everything she has in 1963, she worked for and because she knows that time travel is incredibly uncertain, she's scared to give up this stable life only to emerge in another weird timeline this time without her daughter, husband, and siblings. I'm also really kinda mad at Klaus for not giving Ben a chance to have a moment with the rest of their siblings not named Vanya or Diego but other than that, his actions here were quite understandable. He saw his chance to maybe save the man he loves from certain death and he took it, even if he did do it in a kinda dumb way that only ended up confusing and scaring the kid. I don't think Five was more of a dick this season, his siblings were actually meaner to him this time and literally just blamed him for all their problems even though everything he did was to save them from their own stupidity time and time again. Unlike his siblings, his biggest flaw is perhaps his arrogance which is why he believed that he could take Lila on his own. The show happens in the span of two weeks, minus the flashbacks, so I don't fault them that much for this but I do hope they acknowledge Five's trauma at some point in the future because he also went through a lot (seeing his family die 3 times, being all alone for 45 years). Ben is awesome and he's cute but I don't think we've really gotten to know him enough beyond being the voice of reason for Klaus that he doesn't listen to. I feel bad for saying this but I actually kinda teared up more when Elliot died (poor guy deserved better) than when Ben did a second time. Although I guess it was smarter than to just keep on letting him be a ghost who can only talk to Klaus. He did get more development this season though. Vanya's arc here was kinda frustrating to me because she just kept going back to Sissy but I guess it's understandable because at that moment, they were the only ones who provided a sense of familiarity to her in a rapidly changing world where she suddenly found out she had powers and siblings that also had powers on a quest to save the world. As a character, I actually love Lila and her dynamic with Diego is awesome. I think they're perfect for each other. I also love how her arc goes well with the overarching theme of abuse and the different ways they affect people. My biggest problem with her is actually her powers because how could she be as good as Five and Vanya in using their powers when she didn't have the same amount of training? Overall, I don't know if this season was better or worse than s1 but I prefer this pacing and light-hearted tone more. I also love how we got more sibling moments here, especially ones that finally include Vanya. Also, I don't think it's really fair on the characters to judge them on dumb decisions because the show already established that these people are very broken and never really got to grow up beyond being emotionally stunted adults who don't always know better. All their flaws can literally be traced back to the A+ parenting that they got. Also, I think it's already established that Five, Allison, and Vanya are basically the only ones who have complete custody of their brain cells. Klaus shares his with Ben while Luther and Diego share half of a brain cell.
Vanya is kinda the worst out of all of them. I guess I should say I did like the season and I overall liked all the characters, but of everyone on screen, Vanya doesn't really have a personality and feels more of just a plot device that the other characters have to deal with. After seeing some commentary videos, I feel like Im in the minority on this one which kind of surprised me. I feel like her losing her memory kept her character's possible growth sidelined.
I am with you on most of your points, but the characters' bad decisions are what make the show so great, like Claus's cult, hilarious, idk like some of the stuff was necessary to make the show as great as it was
I wish Lila had a unique power instead of mimicking powers. It's so unimaginative. On the other hand, that's why she was specifically chosen as it's a handy deterrent against 42 special children. UA might need her help if season 3 is gonna bring the other 35 children up.
I feel like Klaus wasn’t as exciting as he was in season one. I’m glad that they explored the other characters in season two, but I feel like they put Klaus on the back burner. He kind of seemed like he was lacking character and humor a little bit. He also never knew what was happening with the plot. I also see why he would be different this season though, now that he is in touch with his powers and maturing. This season was more emotional for Klaus with him trying to save his ex-boyfriend. I still loved his character and season 2 though! I’m excited for season 3!
Honestly though, I don't really mind if they "mess up" the timeline by "fixing" stuff in the past. Like, of course Allison joining the movement and leading a group will have an impact on the timeline, but isn't that the point? Whatever action is made in any timeline will effect the future of the timeline. So if you can change the timeline for the better, what's so wrong with changing it. The only difference here is that she's lived in the future, so she knows one form of the timeline, but that doesn't mean it has to be set in stone.
It's never established that mucking with the timeline is inherently bad... because the world not ending in 2019 is a pretty big change. The buro is obsessed with maintaining the timeline, but they are also the ones who have apparently decided that the world must end in 2019. So, yea, all that stuff about maintaining the sanctity of the timeline is kind of a moot point in my opinion. The issue with what happens in season 2 is more about how the timeline was changed. If Diego had simply stopped the shooting the outcome would have been very different.
First of all great video 🙂 you had me in all your points, except one... the time travel inconsistency you pointed out could be true if it wasn't for the fact that we have 43 super powered children that was born on the same day same time. Hargreeves chose the 7 we know and love but if their encounter in the sixties gave him any doubts about adopting the umbrella academy we still have 36 other children. And by choosing 7 out of the 43 that is not the ones we know only changes their supposed background story cuz they're still part of the 43. Hence why Ben was chosen without a problem cuz he haven't met Hargreeves when the others did. This is end up being a really good plot device for the next season which I'm looking forward to 😁
The Allison power thing was something I also appreciated because I too was getting tired of her refusal to use her powers but then she started and like went overboard and you could actually see taht she has no self control when it comes to her powers (something that was previously hinted at but show not tell) so I think that was a great inclusion and really helpful in feeling more understanding of allison’s hesistance to use her powers.
My problem with the “he didn’t adopt the umbrellas and did adopt the sparrows” thing is that it makes no sense? The first season told us that “he got 7 of them” with the implication that he tried to get more but couldn’t. And now suddenly he can afford to pass over the umbrella academy, and there’s suddenly 6 other babies who he gets? Doesn’t that imply that he could’ve gotten more than 7 the first time around?
I don't really know why but Luther was actually a good guy, he was one of the only siblings that met up with five to potentially travel back to 2019. he remained calm when (kinda) when 2019 five met up with the 1960s five and he got kicked in the nuts which was pretty sad in general. He was a brat for not accepting (well he kinda did) for Allison having a husband but overall his childhood trauma did lead him up to this point so I guess pity for him.
The apocalypse already happened in 2019. They watched it happen. They know that everyone dies like Five said they would, and then they each land in the 60s all alone not knowing what happened to the rest of their siblings. They weren't screwing up the timeline, they thought they HAD to live in the 60s and try to make any sort of life there for themselves. Alison had already lost Claire, she watched the world end right before they time traveled.
